Midnight Season 2 opens Tuesday, August 18, 2026 — and Patch 12.1 changed the job description for tanks more than it changed any other role. "Curse of Ula'tek" went live August 11 (August 12 in the EU) with the biggest class balance pass since Midnight launched, and buried in it is one line that matters more to tanks than every spec buff combined: creature damage went up 25% at max level. Every tank in the game is now standing in front of enemies that hit a quarter harder, with a self-healing and absorb kit that Blizzard had to hand-scale to keep up. This guide ranks all six tank specs for both halves of Season 2 — the eight-dungeon Mythic+ pool and The Venomous Abyss raid — and shows the exact 12.1 line item that moved each one.
⚡ TL;DR — Best tanks for WoW Midnight Season 2 (Patch 12.1)
- Season 2 starts Tue Aug 18, 2026 (NA) / Wed Aug 19 (EU). No Season 2 logs exist yet. Everything below is built from the official 12.1 content update notes, the August 15 pre-season class tuning post, and 12.1 PTR testing — not live season data.
- Blood Death Knight is the consensus number one, and it is the only spec sitting in S-tier on both the Mythic+ and raid PTR lists.
- Mythic+ order (Icy Veins PTR list, updated August 9, 2026): S Blood DK · A+ Protection Paladin, Guardian Druid, Vengeance DH · A Protection Warrior · B Brewmaster Monk.
- Raid order (Icy Veins Season 2 list, updated August 8, 2026): S Blood DK · A Guardian Druid, Brewmaster Monk, Protection Warrior, Protection Paladin · B Vengeance DH.
- The headline lever: +25% player health and +25% creature damage at max level. Blizzard scaled tank self-heals and absorbs up alongside it — Blood DK's Rapid Decomposition healing by 85%, Brewmaster's Celestial Brew absorb by 150%.
- Blood DK was the only tank touched in the August 15 pre-season tuning batch — and it was a nerf: San'layn's Visceral Strength cut from 10% to 6% strength.

Are these Season 2 tank rankings based on real data?
Straight answer, because it matters more than the tier letters: Mythic+ Season 2 has not started. There is no Season 2 Warcraft Logs data, no Raider.IO ladder, no keystone parses and no Venomous Abyss pull. Anybody publishing "Season 2 tank survivability percentiles" on August 15 is simulating, extrapolating, or making it up.
Here is exactly what this article is built from:
- Blizzard's official Curse of Ula'tek content update notes — the per-spec percentage changes and developer notes published on worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com. These are facts, not forecasts.
- Blizzard's August 15, 2026 class tuning post on the official forums, which lists the last adjustments going live before Season 2 opens.
- 12.1 PTR testing and simulation by the theorycraft sites. Icy Veins states its tank methodology plainly: rankings are based on "a combination of pure tanking survivability, personal DPS, and group-added-value such as utility, mobility, and defensive options," and it labels the pre-season list a "Progressive Tierlist" that will keep moving.
- Late Season 1 trends — used only to describe where a spec was coming from, never as a Season 2 number.
Blizzard itself is telling you not to treat week one as settled. Community manager Kaivax, posting the Season 2 class tuning plan on August 12, wrote: "Early progression tuning will generally be conservative, especially before Ula'tek has been defeated on Mythic difficulty." Four tuning passes are already on the calendar — August 18, August 25, September 1 and September 22 — so anything below is a launch-day starting point with a two-week shelf life.
What did Patch 12.1 change for tanks?
The headline is not a spec change. It is a global one, and Blizzard wrote it in a single sentence in the content update notes:
"Player health and creature damage has been increased by 25% at max level. Health consumable values have been adjusted to match new health values."
— Blizzard Entertainment, Curse of Ula'tek Content Update Notes
For DPS this is a footnote. For tanks it is the whole patch. Read the two halves separately:
- +25% player health inflates your effective health pool, which makes percentage-based mitigation and percentage-based self-healing worth 25% more raw HP per cast. Guardian Druid's Frenzied Regeneration, Protection Paladin's Word of Glory and Blood DK's Death Strike all scale off numbers that just got bigger.
- +25% creature damage inflates incoming damage by the same factor — but crucially, it inflates melee auto-attack and steady tank damage, the part of a pull that flat absorbs and Stagger eat. The specs that convert incoming damage into healing (Blood, Vengeance, Brewmaster) get a bigger input to convert.
Blizzard also made the compensation explicit: it adjusted "several healing and absorb spells for DPS and Tank specializations so that they retain their relative impact." That is why the tank patch notes read like a wall of 25% self-heal buffs.
Here are the per-spec 12.1 changes that actually move tank rankings:
| Spec | Survivability changes in 12.1 | Damage / threat changes in 12.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Death Knight | Rapid Decomposition healing +85% · Relish in Blood healing +25% · Sanguinary Burst healing to 18% of damage · Permafrost shield to 50% of damage dealt · Dancing Rune Weapon parry bonus to 30% | Melee damage +20% · Heart Strike +25% · Marrowrend +50% · tier set rebuilt around Blood Beast |
| Protection Paladin | New Blessed Word: Word of Glory can no longer crit, but its healing scales with your crit chance and 80% of its overhealing becomes an absorb shield · Improved Ardent Defender "now increases maximum HP by 20% while active and no longer cancels remaining duration if fatal damage is sustained" | Judgment +51% · Consecration +100% · Shield of the Righteous +150% |
| Guardian Druid | Multiple absorb and healing abilities scaled up by 25% · Gory Fur redesigned to grant free ability casts · Wild Guardian apex talent reworked around Rage spending | All damage +8% |
| Vengeance Demon Hunter | Soul Cleave and Fel Devastation healing +25% · Feast of Souls healing +25% · Charred Warblades heals for 5% of Fire damage dealt · Frailty returns 10% healing from damage to afflicted targets · Sigil of Chains no longer overwrites Sigil of Misery | All damage +5.5% |
| Protection Warrior | Ignore Pain absorb +25% · free Revenge now procs from successful auto attacks as well as dodges and parries | Practiced Strikes now also buffs Thunder Clap by 15% · Ravager no longer boosts Revenge/Thunder Clap but makes struck enemies take 50% increased bleed damage for 12s |
| Brewmaster Monk | Celestial Brew / Celestial Infusion absorb +150% (cooldown doubled) · Staggering Strikes Stagger reduction +25% · Spirit of the Ox sphere generation +20% · Vital Flame healing to 50% of Fire/Nature damage | Damage largely untouched; Mystic Touch utility unchanged |
Two structural notes are worth more than any single number. Blizzard's stated aim for one of them was spelled out in the notes: "Our goals with these Guardian Druid updates are largely to address issues with the specialization's damage composition and ability breakdown." Guardian was a durability-first spec being asked to do more damage. And Protection Warrior's fix is a genuine playstyle change — the free-Revenge counter-attack triggered often enough in dungeons but was so rare in raid that it fed the spec's Rage starvation. Letting auto attacks proc it smooths the raid rotation specifically.
Then came the final pre-season pass. Blizzard's Linxy opened the August 15 tuning post with: "With the first week of the Curse of Ula'tek content update, we're making some adjustments to low and high performers to start Season 2 next week." Across the whole batch — Frost DK +9%, Devourer DH +14%, Fury Warrior +6%, Resto Druid +4% healing and more — exactly one tank line appeared, and it went the other way: Blood Death Knight's San'layn Visceral Strength now grants 6% strength (was 10%), and Transfusion increases Dancing Rune Weapon damage by 5% (was 10%).
That is the clearest signal Blizzard has given about the tank meta. Five tanks were left alone because they are in an acceptable band. One was pulled down because it is ahead.
What are the best Mythic+ tanks in Midnight Season 2?
Season 2's keystone rotation is a fresh eight-dungeon pool: five Midnight dungeons — Altar of Fangs (the new one, on the Coiled Isle), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale and Voidscar Arena — plus three returning instances, Kings' Rest, Temple of Sethraliss (both Battle for Azeroth) and Ruby Life Pools (Dragonflight). Season 1's pool is fully retired. Full breakdown in our Season 2 Mythic+ dungeon pool guide.
That pool is heavy on packed troll and drake trash, which puts a premium on the three things a keystone tank is actually judged on: can you survive a big pull, can you gather it, and do you contribute damage while you do it.
Based on Icy Veins' PTR-tested Mythic+ tank tier list (last updated August 9, 2026):
| Tier | Spec | Why it lands here |
|---|---|---|
| S | Blood Death Knight | Icy Veins: "Blood DKs are currently not only one of the most durable tanks, but also have the highest damage output across all tank specs." Death Grip pulls are the best gathering tool in the game and self-sustain scales off the +25% creature damage. The one caveat is real: it "remains the only Tank spec in the game that does not bring unique party-wide utility." |
| A+ | Protection Paladin | "Not only are they one of the most durable tanks on the PTR, but they also sport incredibly high damage." Judgment +51%, Consecration +100% and Shield of the Righteous +150% are enormous, and Improved Ardent Defender's +20% max HP is a real answer to spike damage. Demoted from S only after several rounds of consecutive nerfs. |
| A+ | Guardian Druid | Durability is elite and the +25% absorb/heal scaling suits the flatter damage profile perfectly. The +8% damage buff helps but does not close the gap — Icy Veins notes they "currently suffer in the damage department." |
| A+ | Vengeance Demon Hunter | Performance on the PTR is described as "great", with the Sigil of Chains fix finally making the AoE control kit reliable. Held back by "middling durability" — the +25% Soul Cleave and Fel Devastation healing is a patch, not a rebuild. Chaos Brand keeps it in comps regardless. |
| A | Protection Warrior | "Steadily climbing the rankings" with great durability and strong damage. Ignore Pain +25% is exactly the right buff in a world of 25% harder auto attacks, and Shield Wall is still one of the strongest defensive cooldowns in the game. |
| B | Brewmaster Monk | The 150% Celestial Brew absorb buff came with a doubled cooldown, so it is burstier rather than stronger, and the spec continues to "struggle to compete against the best-performing tanks in the durability department." Great damage, best-in-slot mobility, weakest floor. |
The practical read for pugs: Blood Death Knight and Protection Paladin. Blood because a self-sufficient tank hides a mediocre healer, and Death Grip fixes bad pulls before they become wipes. Protection Paladin because Blessing of Protection, Blessing of Sacrifice and Devotion Aura are the utility buttons pug groups need most, and the spec now does top-tier damage on top.
The read for organised keys: the utility argument gets louder. Vengeance's Chaos Brand and Brewmaster's Mystic Touch are group-wide damage amplifiers, and a coordinated group can cover for a lower personal survivability floor with externals. That is a composition argument, not a throughput one — and it is the exact reason Blood DK's lack of a party buff is the only thing keeping the conversation open.

Which tanks are best for The Venomous Abyss raid?
The Venomous Abyss is an 8-boss, Amani-troll-themed raid ending on Ula'tek, and it opens with Season 2 on August 18 — not on patch day.
Raid tanking rewards a different profile than keys: scripted, telegraphed damage events instead of pull-to-pull attrition; almost no value on gathering tools; a lot of value on the specific mechanic a boss demands. That reshuffles the order. Icy Veins' Season 2 raid tank list (last updated August 8, 2026):
| Tier | Spec | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S | Blood Death Knight | "The tanks with the most absolute control over their own survival." Also the designated grip-bot — several Venomous Abyss mechanics reward a tank who can reposition an add on demand. |
| A | Guardian Druid | "Very powerful DPS" output, but the raid-slot argument gets awkward: Balance Druid is projected to be strong for these fight profiles, so the Druid buff may already be in the group. |
| A | Brewmaster Monk | Much better in raid than in keys. "Very competitive damage output" and, importantly, the Mystic Touch debuff — which matters more this tier because Mistweaver is not projected to be a common pick. |
| A | Protection Warrior | "A very competitive choice" for teams with no specific buff requirement, carrying "one of the strongest defensive cooldowns available." The auto-attack Revenge proc fix targets raid Rage starvation directly. |
| A | Protection Paladin | "Improved their defensive capability" and offers the best external cooldowns in the role — but their value "falls" on fights where nobody needs a Blessing. |
| B | Vengeance Demon Hunter | Solid all-round, but held back by "friction in the talent trees." Primarily brings Chaos Brand, which is a comp argument, not a tanking one. |
This table is a projection, not a measurement. There are no Venomous Abyss logs — the raid is not open. Note also that the raid and Mythic+ lists disagree on two specs: Brewmaster is B in keys and A in raid, Vengeance is A+ in keys and B in raid. Do not blend them into one "best tank" ranking; pick the list that matches the content you actually run.
Player feedback on the tier sets is already sharp. On the official 12.1 Protection Warrior class-set feedback thread, forum poster Shogan wrote: "Right now our new Tier Set is buffing Revenge and Bleed. The problem is that Best Served Cold now becomes a must" — a reminder that tier sets can quietly delete talent choice even when the raw numbers look generous.

Which tank should you gear before August 18?
Three honest recommendations, depending on what you want out of the season:
- You want the safest possible main: Blood Death Knight. S-tier in both keys and raid, the highest tank damage in the game, and the most self-sufficient kit in a patch where enemies hit 25% harder. Accept that you bring no party buff, and accept that being the outlier means you are first in line for the next nerf — Blizzard already took 4% strength off San'layn on August 15.
- You mostly pug keys and want to be wanted: Protection Paladin. Enormous damage buffs, +20% max HP on Ardent Defender, and the utility toolkit that rescues bad groups. A+ in Mythic+ with genuine S-tier upside if the Season 2 tuning passes are kind.
- You want one character that is fine everywhere: Protection Warrior. A-tier on both lists, Ignore Pain +25%, Shield Wall, no comp requirements and no hard weaknesses. The least exciting answer and the least likely to be wrong.
Whichever you pick, week one is decided by item level, not by tier letter. A B-tier tank fifteen item levels ahead survives pulls that kill an S-tier tank in leftover Season 1 gear — and remember that Season 1's Dawncrests do not carry over, since 12.1 replaced them with Mistcrests as the Season 2 upgrade currency. Our Season 2 gearing guide and item level chart covers the fastest raid-ready path. FAQ
Who is the best tank in WoW Midnight Season 2? Blood Death Knight, on the pre-season evidence. It is the only tank in S-tier on both Icy Veins' Mythic+ PTR list (updated August 9, 2026) and its Season 2 raid list (updated August 8, 2026), it has the highest personal damage in the role, and 12.1 buffed its self-healing heavily — Rapid Decomposition by 85%, Relish in Blood by 25%. Its only real weakness is that it brings no unique party-wide buff.
When does WoW Midnight Season 2 start? Tuesday, August 18, 2026 in North America and Wednesday, August 19 in Europe, one week after Patch 12.1 "Curse of Ula'tek" went live on August 11 (August 12 EU). The Venomous Abyss raid, the Mythic+ ladder and PvP Season 2 all open on that date, not on patch day.
How does the 25% health and damage change affect tanks? It is the single biggest tank lever in the patch. Player health up 25% makes every percentage-based self-heal and absorb worth proportionally more raw HP, while creature damage up 25% increases the input that damage-conversion tanks — Blood DK, Vengeance, Brewmaster — turn back into healing. Blizzard hand-scaled tank healing and absorb spells alongside it "so that they retain their relative impact," which is why the tank notes are full of 25% self-heal buffs.
Which tank got nerfed before Season 2? Blood Death Knight, and it was the only tank touched in Blizzard's August 15, 2026 class tuning pass: San'layn's Visceral Strength now grants 6% strength instead of 10%, and Transfusion increases Dancing Rune Weapon damage by 5% instead of 10%. The other five tank specs received no changes in that batch.
Is Brewmaster Monk bad in Season 2? Not bad — mismatched. It sits in B-tier for Mythic+, where Icy Veins says it continues to "struggle to compete against the best-performing tanks in the durability department," but in A-tier for raid, where its damage and the Mystic Touch debuff carry more weight. The Celestial Brew absorb buff of 150% came with a doubled cooldown, so it is burstier rather than flatly stronger.
Are these tank tier lists reliable this early? Only as a starting point. Season 2 has not begun, so no live logs or ladder data exist — every ranking published before August 18 is built from the official patch notes, pre-season tuning and PTR simulation. Blizzard has scheduled further tuning on August 18, August 25, September 1 and September 22, and we will update this article against real Warcraft Logs and Raider.IO data once Season 2 keys and Venomous Abyss are live.
