AION 2 Combat Power Explained: Why Your Gear Score Lies and How to Actually Get Stronger (October 2026)

You hit Level 45, you equip every upgrade the game hands you, your Gear Score climbs past 2,000 — and then a Cleric in your dungeon group with a lower item level is doing noticeably more than you. If that sounds familiar, you have run straight into the single most-asked question on r/Aion2 since the 5 October 2026 global launch: why is my Combat Power so low for my Gear Score, and how do I actually fix it?

The short version is that AION 2 has two separate power numbers, they are not the same thing, and chasing the wrong one is how new players waste their first week of materials. This guide explains what Combat Power really measures, why it drifts away from Gear Score, and the exact systems — most of them nothing to do with the gear in your bags — that move the number that matters.

Quick answer: In AION 2, Gear Score (also shown as Item Level / GS) mostly gates content — it is roughly the sum of the item levels on your equipped pieces — while Combat Power (CP) reflects your character's actual combat stats. Two players at the same Gear Score can have very different Combat Power because CP also counts your Daevanion Board nodes, Stigma skill levels, Arcana, skill levels, pet Genus Insight, wings/feathers and titles — permanent systems that live outside your equipment. So "get stronger" is not "equip a bigger number"; it is enhance your current gear, then feed every secondary system. One important caveat up front: NC has not published exact enhancement success rates or CP formulas for the global build, so every number below that is tagged KR/TW or community-tested is a reference, not a guarantee — check your own client's preview before you spend anything.

Below: the CP-vs-GS distinction in plain language, every system that feeds Combat Power, the enhancement rules (and the ones NC has not confirmed), and a priority order so you stop wasting materials.

Combat Power vs Gear Score: what is the difference?

Gear Score and Combat Power are two different measurements, and the gap between them is the whole game of getting stronger.

  • Gear Score (GS / Item Level) is, in practical terms, the combined item level of everything you have equipped. It is the number dungeons and expeditions check when they decide whether to let you queue. Raising it is mostly about equipping higher-tier pieces, enhancing them, and pushing a handful of slots (notably the belt and amulet) up their rarity track. GS unlocks content.
  • Combat Power (CP) is a single rating built from your character's underlying combat stats and permanent progression. It reacts to far more than your equipment: skill levels, Stigma levels, Daevanion Board nodes, Arcana, pet bonuses and more all push it. CP reflects how hard you actually hit and how well you survive.

Community theorycrafters on r/Aion2 put it bluntly. As one player summarised a low-CP Cleric's problem: "You need to have optimized arcana, Daeva board, stigma, and so on. I'm currently 90k combat power @ 1945 GS. You need to start focusing less on GS but more on the skill/stat that matters." That is the lived version of the distinction: a character at ~1,945 GS was hitting ~90,000 CP, while the person asking had a higher ~2,096 ilvl and only ~80,000 CP — because the secondary systems were empty.

This is also why some upgrades raise one number and not the other. Gear-stat re-rolls, for example, can lift your displayed Combat Power without moving your Gear Score at all, because they change the combat stats behind an item rather than its item level. If you only ever watch GS, you will undervalue every system that is actually carrying stronger players.

Takeaway: use Gear Score to know what content you can enter, and use Combat Power to know whether you can clear it. They are not interchangeable.

What raises Combat Power in AION 2?

Combat Power is fed by a stack of permanent systems. Here is the full list of levers, grouped so you can see where your number is leaking. (Mechanics below reflect the live global client plus KR/TW reference where the global build has not been independently tested; NC has published no CP formula.)

SystemWhat it isPrimarily raises
Gear + EnhancementEquipped items and their enhancement levelGS and CP
Daevanion BoardA separate node board bought with Daevanion Crystals/PointsCP (stats + skill levels)
StigmaEquippable skill enhancements leveled with Stigma ShardsCP
ArcanaCard/collection system that adds stats and pushes skill levelsCP (and item level)
Skill levelsYour active/passive skills, raised with Skill PointsCP
Pet Genus Insight / ExpertisePet collection + expertise rollsCP
Wings / FeathersUpgradeable flight gear that carries statsGS and CP
TitlesEarned titles that grant passive statsCP

Three of these are where most new players are quietly losing thousands of CP:

The Daevanion Board

The Daevanion Board is a separate stat-and-skill board — it is not your normal skill tree and it does not share resources with it. You spend Daevanion Crystals/Points (earned largely from quests and progression) to light up nodes that grant stats and can raise skill levels past their normal cap. Community guides describe the max-skill path as roughly Skill Points → Daevanion → Arcana / Soul Bindings, with Stigma on its own separate track. Nodes are refundable — you can reset and redistribute them — so you are not permanently punished for an early mistake, but an empty board is pure lost Combat Power.

Stigma skills

Stigmas in AION 2 are not the insertable tier-stones old Aion players remember — that is one of the easiest ways to write something wrong about this game (AION 2 is a different game from the 2008 Aion and from Aion Classic). Here, Stigma skills are leveled with Stigma Shards, a distinct resource pool from your normal skill points. Community databases report each Stigma skill can be pushed to an enhancement level in the mid-20s (raised from 20 in a 2026 KR patch), and shards come from sources like supply turn-ins, PvP, the Abyss and daily duties. Treat the exact cap as patch-dependent and check your own client.

Pet Genus Insight

This is the big one almost nobody fills out early. As one r/Aion2 player explained to a struggling Cleric: "a very large amount of power comes from the pet genus… for each genus, you can level them up using some crystal currency, and each tap rolls the stats associated with it. Do that a bunch of times while locking useful blue-tier stats you gain." Pets and their Genus/Expertise rolls feed Combat Power directly, and because it is a grind-and-reroll system rather than a gear drop, it is invisible if you never open the tab.

If your CP looks low for your Gear Score, the culprit is almost always one of these three sitting empty.

How does gear enhancement work — and what has NC not confirmed?

Enhancement is the part of gear progression where people burn materials fastest, so this is where hedging matters most. Here is the responsible read as of October 2026:

  • Enhancement is broadly non-destructive. Across KR/TW reference and early global testing, a failed enhancement consumes materials but does not destroy or downgrade the item, and failures build toward a soft-pity improved chance on the next attempt. This is the opposite of old-Aion horror stories.
  • There is a "safe" early band, then a risk band — but the exact threshold is disputed. Different community sources report the guaranteed band as up to +10, while others report smaller guaranteed steps and a risk band that starts earlier and runs up toward +15 on higher rarities. NC has published no official global enhancement success table. Do not trust any single seller blog that states a flat percentage as fact — read the success-rate preview in your own client before confirming.
  • Materials are largely recoverable on swap. Extracting/transferring an enhanced piece is widely reported to refund enhancement materials (not necessarily Kina or every socketed item), so upgrading your current best piece and transferring later is usually safer than hoarding.
  • The belt and amulet are special. Those two slots run a Substance Morph rarity track (Rare → Epic → Unique) rather than a straight upgrade, with each grade re-enhanced from 0 before you morph to the next — a known KR/TW behaviour. Expect them to absorb far more materials than a normal slot.

We cover the broader economy and why NC has published so few hard numbers in our AION 2 dungeons and endgame guide and our AION 2 Kina farming guide — enhancement is the single biggest Kina-and-materials sink in the game, which is exactly why rushing it is expensive.

What should you upgrade first? A no-waste priority order

You do not have the materials to max everything at once, so order matters. A sane early-to-mid priority for most players:

  • Enhance your current main-hand weapon within the safe band first. Weapon enhancement is the highest raw damage-per-material you can buy early, and the safe band is low-risk.
  • Fill the free, permanent systems you are ignoring: Daevanion Board nodes, your Stigma levels, and Arcana. These cost no gear drops — only time and their own currencies — and they are pure CP.
  • Start your pet Genus Insight grind. It is slow, but it compounds, and it is the most common missing chunk of Combat Power on low-CP characters.
  • Push belt and amulet through Substance Morph as you can afford it — they are expensive but high-value stat slots.
  • Only then chase big Gear Score jumps from new drops, upgrading an existing piece one tier ahead rather than starting a fresh item from +0 so your enhancement carries over.

The anti-pattern to avoid: dumping every enhancement material into a piece you are about to replace, or past the safe band on an early item, while your Daevanion Board and pets sit at zero. That is how you end up as the 2,000+ Gear Score character who still can't out-damage a friend 150 ilvl below you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Combat Power the same as Gear Score in AION 2? No. Gear Score (Item Level / GS) is roughly the sum of the item levels on your equipped gear and is used to gate content. Combat Power (CP) is a separate rating built from your actual combat stats, including systems that are not gear at all — Daevanion Board, Stigma, Arcana, skill levels, pets, wings and titles. Two players at the same GS routinely have very different CP.

Why is my Combat Power low for my Gear Score? Almost always because one or more non-gear systems are empty: an unfilled Daevanion Board, low Stigma levels, no Arcana, or — most commonly — an untouched pet Genus Insight. A player on r/Aion2 reached ~90,000 CP at ~1,945 GS largely by maxing those systems, while a higher-ilvl character sat at ~80,000 CP without them. Fill the free permanent systems before blaming your gear.

Does enhancing gear destroy it in AION 2? Reports across the Korean/Taiwanese builds and early global testing say enhancement is non-destructive — a failed attempt consumes materials but does not break or downgrade the item, and failures build a soft-pity bonus toward the next attempt. However, NC has not published official global success rates, so check the in-client success preview before every risky attempt.

How do I get Stigma Shards and Daevanion Points? Stigma Shards come from activities like supply turn-ins, PvP, the Abyss and daily duties; Daevanion Points/Crystals come largely from quests and ongoing progression. Both are separate resource pools from your normal Skill Points, so leveling skills does not fill them — you have to engage the specific systems.

Should I rush gear enhancement right after launch? No. Enhancement is the biggest Kina-and-materials sink in the game, and the risk band above the early "safe" levels can eat materials for no gain. Enhance your weapon in the safe band, fill your free permanent systems first, and save heavy material spending for gear you intend to keep.

Can I respec if I spend Daevanion or Stigma wrong? Yes. AION 2 lets you refund Daevanion Board nodes, reset Skill Points, and reset individual Stigma skills — each system refunds its own resource, so early mistakes are recoverable rather than permanent.

The bottom line

Gear Score tells you which doors open; Combat Power tells you whether you win the fight behind them. The players clearing content well above their item level are not luckier with drops — they have filled the quiet systems: a maxed Daevanion Board, leveled Stigmas, Arcana, and a ground-out pet Genus. Enhance your weapon within the safe band, feed the free permanent systems before you spend heavy materials, and treat belt and amulet as the long-term money sinks they are. Do that and your Combat Power will finally catch up to the Gear Score you have been staring at.

Short on time to grind Combat Power and Kina? AION 2's secondary systems and enhancement are a deliberate grind — if you'd rather spend your hours on the content, not the material farm, keep an eye on timesaver.gg as AION 2 services come online.
