Applies to: Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, on Game Update 1.4.3.0 (dated September 14, 2026, live September 15) during the current season, Season 4: Naval Warfare. Every ballistic number below comes from the last full balance overhaul, Game Update 1.3.3.0, because 1.4.3.0 contains no balance entries for any carbine.
Quick Answer
- The AK-205 is the best carbine in Battlefield 6, and it is not close. It sits at 7.4 degrees of recoil variation and 708 m/s muzzle velocity, which is first place on both axes at once. No other carbine manages that.
- It is also the most consistent gun in the entire game. Its 7.4 degrees is the lowest of all 39 recoil-variation entries EA published in Game Update 1.3.3.0, across every weapon class.
- Its lead is enormous. The second-most consistent carbine, the M417 A2, sits at 15.4 degrees, more than double. The second-fastest, the QBZ-192, is 100 m/s slower.
- Carbines are the most consistent automatic class in Battlefield 6. Our class average is 23.19 degrees, against 29.52 for LMGs, 30.16 for SMGs and 31.13 for assault rifles.
- They pay for it in reach. Class average velocity is 579.0 m/s, roughly 110 m/s down on assault rifles.
- Carbines and DMRs are the only two primary classes with no free starter weapon. Every other class hands you one at Career Rank 0. Carbines start at Career Rank 2 and the good ones sit at Ranks 22, 32 and 41, or behind assignments.
Carbines are the class most Battlefield 6 players ignore, and the class the game quietly built to be the safest choice in it. They are available to every class in Closed Weapon experiences, they sit between assault rifles and SMGs on paper, and EA's own description damns them with faint praise: "In a similar arena as the Assault Rifles, albeit smaller and designed for closer engagements as opposed to shooting at long ranges."
That framing is out of date. Game Update 1.3.3.0 rewrote recoil variation and muzzle velocity across the arsenal, and when you pull the carbines out of that table and sort them, the class comes out ahead of every other automatic category on consistency by a margin no amount of "feel" can argue with.
So we did exactly that: isolated every carbine in EA's published balance tables, sorted the class end to end on both axes, and checked each gun against the in-game catalogue for how it actually unlocks.
How many carbines are in Battlefield 6?
There are nine carbines in Battlefield 6 as of Season 4: Naval Warfare. In catalogue order, with their unlock condition:
- M4A1 — Career Rank 2
- M277 — Career Rank 11
- AK-205 — Career Rank 22
- M417 A2 — Career Rank 32
- GRT-BC — Career Rank 41
- QBZ-192 — Assignment DANGER CLOSE 1
- SG 553R — Assignment DANGER CLOSE 2
- SOR-300SC — Season 1 Catch-Up Challenge (originally in the Battle Pass)
- BROD 3 — Season 4 Battle Pass
Eight of those nine appear in the 1.3.3.0 balance tables. The BROD 3 does not, because it arrived with Season 4, after that update shipped. Every ranking below therefore covers eight rated carbines, and we flag the BROD 3 separately rather than inventing numbers for it.
One thing to notice before any of the stats: there is no default-unlocked carbine. Assault rifles start you on the M433, SMGs on the SGX, LMGs on the L110, snipers on the M2010 ESR and shotguns on the M87A1. Carbines and DMRs are the only two primary classes that hand you nothing.
Which numbers actually decide a carbine?
Two, and EA publishes both.
Recoil variation, in degrees, is the one that decides gunfights. It is not raw kick, it is how much the kick differs from shot to shot. A low number means the weapon repeats the same pattern, so you can learn it and pull against it. A high number means part of your spray is random no matter how good your control is. EA was explicit about the intent when 1.3.3.0 shipped: "We've reduced recoil variation across the arsenal to make weapon behavior more predictable and controllable. Weapons should feel less erratic during sustained fire while retaining their individual recoil characteristics."
Bullet velocity, in metres per second, decides how far ahead of a moving target you have to aim and how fast your rounds arrive at range. It matters more than it used to, because the same update raised bullet drag by 40% across all weapons and by 100% on Match Grade ammo.
Carbines took a class-wide haircut on both: total recoil variation fell 16.5% and average velocity fell 5.78%, from 614.5 m/s to 579.0 m/s.

The AK-205 result deserves a second look, because it is the strangest entry in EA's whole table. It received the smallest recoil cut of any carbine, just 5.1% — and it still finished first by a factor of two. It was not buffed into the top spot. It was already there before the patch at 7.8 degrees, and EA barely touched it because it did not need touching.
The bottom of the table is just as instructive. The M4A1 at Career Rank 2 and the M277 at Career Rank 11 are the two carbines almost every player actually owns, and they finish sixth and seventh of eight. EA's own catalogue warns you about the first one: "With its high cyclic rate, extending this carbine's effective range requires competent recoil management."

| # | Carbine | Velocity before | Velocity after | Change | Recoil after |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | AK-205 | 737 m/s | 708 m/s | -3.93% | 7.4 |
| 2 | QBZ-192 | 644 m/s | 608 m/s | -5.59% | 19.9 |

| 4 | M4A1 | 630 m/s | 590 m/s | -6.35% | 30.7 |
| 5 | GRT-BC | 599 m/s | 563 m/s | -6.01% | 26.1 |
| 6 | M417 A2 | 600 m/s | 560 m/s | -6.67% | 15.4 |
| 7 | SOR-300SC | 563 m/s | 528 m/s | -6.22% | 15.8 |
| 8 | SG 553R | 519 m/s | 483 m/s | -6.94% | 35.8 |
The AK-205 again took the smallest cut in the class and again finished first, 100 m/s clear of second place. Its in-game tags are "Accurate", "Long Range" and "Steady Firerate", and for once those marketing words match the table underneath them.
The real loser is the SG 553R. It is last on recoil, last on velocity, took the largest velocity cut in the class, and it is gated behind DANGER CLOSE 2 — an assignment, not a rank. EA is honest about it: "Its effectiveness quickly diminishes beyond mid range." Treat it as a close-quarters weapon or skip it.
Is the QBZ-192 better than the AK-205?
This is the live argument in the community right now, and it is worth settling with numbers because both sides are half right.
On r/Battlefield6 this week, players swapping carbine picks landed on exactly this matchup. One argued the QBZ is underrated and that "people who use KTS or AK 205 should try QBZ because it's just better version." Another pushed back: "I think you can't beat the 205 in terms of precision. Super accurate sprays at 100 meters." A third described the AK-205 as having "perfectly vertical recoil, perfect for any range."
The tables side with the second and third players, decisively. The QBZ-192 is a genuinely good carbine — fourth on recoil, second on velocity, and the only gun in the class that is above average on both axes other than the AK-205 itself. It is comfortably the best carbine you can own before Career Rank 22, because it comes from an assignment rather than a rank.
But "better version" does not survive contact with the numbers. The AK-205 is at 7.4 degrees against the QBZ's 19.9, and 708 m/s against 608. That is not a preference gap, it is a category gap. The players describing perfectly vertical, learnable recoil are describing what a 7.4-degree variation figure feels like in the hand.
How do carbines compare to the other weapon classes?
With all five primary automatic and semi-automatic classes now measured off the same 1.3.3.0 table, the comparison is finally possible.
| Class | Average recoil variation | Rated weapons |
|---|---|---|
| Carbine | 23.19 | 8 |
| LMG | 29.52 | 9 |
| SMG | 30.16 | 10 |
| Assault rifle | 31.13 | 10 |
Carbines are 6.3 degrees more consistent than the next-best class and nearly 8 degrees clear of assault rifles. That is the single largest gap between any two classes in the game, and it directly contradicts how the class reads in the menu, where carbines are presented as the compromise option.
The trade is range. Carbine average velocity is 579.0 m/s against roughly 689 m/s for assault rifles, so your bullets take meaningfully longer to arrive and you lead moving targets further. If you are playing Conquest on the larger Season 4 maps, that gap is real. On Breakthrough, Rush and the close-quarters modes, the consistency is worth more than the reach — which is the same conclusion our assault rifle rankings and SMG rankings reached from the other direction.
What is the fastest way to unlock the AK-205?
Career Rank 22, and there is no shortcut in the menus. The AK-205 is not an assignment, not a Battle Pass tier and not a catch-up challenge — it is a flat rank gate, so the only way through it is Career XP.
That makes the carbine class an unusually expensive one to actually use. The two carbines you can own early, the M4A1 and the M277, finish sixth and seventh of eight. The three that are genuinely worth building a loadout around sit at Career Rank 22, Career Rank 32 and behind DANGER CLOSE 1. Reaching Rank 22 from a fresh account is a real grind, and unlike the Career Rank cap, it is not something you drift into.
If you would rather spend your evenings using the gun than earning it, we can take that part off your hands.

FAQ
What is the best carbine in Battlefield 6? The AK-205, unlocked at Career Rank 22. It is first in the class on both recoil variation (7.4 degrees) and muzzle velocity (708 m/s) after Game Update 1.3.3.0, and its 7.4-degree figure is the lowest of any weapon in the game.
Is the AK-205 a carbine or an assault rifle? A carbine. EA's own weapon-class page lists it under Carbine Rifles at Career Rank 22, alongside the M4A1 and M277. The KV9, which players often group with it, is an SMG at Career Rank 45.
What is the best carbine before Career Rank 22? The QBZ-192, because it comes from Assignment DANGER CLOSE 1 rather than a rank gate. It is fourth in the class on recoil and second on velocity, which makes it the only early-access carbine that is above the class average on both axes.
Did Update 1.4.3.0 change any carbine stats? No. 1.4.3.0 contains no recoil or velocity changes for any carbine. Its only carbine-adjacent entries are presentation fixes for the BROD 3, including "Corrected an issue where the lasers did not move with the short/extended handguards on the BROD 3." The governing balance numbers are still 1.3.3.0's.
How good is the BROD 3? Unknown from EA's published data. The BROD 3 arrived with the Season 4 Battle Pass, after the 1.3.3.0 balance tables were published, so it has no rated recoil or velocity figure. Any tier list that gives it a hard number is guessing.
Are carbines worth using over assault rifles? On consistency, yes — the class averages 23.19 degrees of recoil variation against 31.13 for assault rifles. On range, no: carbines average roughly 110 m/s less muzzle velocity, which matters on the larger Season 4 maps. EA also notes that carbines are "Available to all classes in Closed Weapon experiences", which makes them the flexible pick when class restrictions are on.
Why is there no free carbine? EA gives every other primary class a default-unlocked weapon — M433, SGX, L110, M2010 ESR and M87A1 — but carbines and DMRs both start locked. The earliest carbine is the M4A1 at Career Rank 2.
