Applies to: Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, on Game Update 1.4.3.0 (dated September 14, 2026, live September 15) during the current season, Season 4: Naval Warfare. Every ballistic number below comes from the last full balance overhaul, Game Update 1.3.3.0, because 1.4.3.0 changed nothing in this class.

Ask which SMG is best in Battlefield 6 and you get the same answer everywhere: the SCW-10. Ask why, and the answer turns into feel. EA publishes the two numbers that govern how a submachine gun behaves at range, and sorted by both of them, the community pick lands seventh on one list and seventh on the other.

Quick Answer

  • Battlefield 6 has exactly 10 submachine guns on EA's Season 4 weapon list: SGX, PW5A3, PW7A2, UMG-40, USG-90, KV9, SCW-10, SL9, CZ3A1 and PP-19.
  • Lowest recoil variation is a dead tie at 13.0 degrees between the UMG-40 (Career Rank 29) and the SL9 (Assignment CLOSE QUARTERS 2). The next gun down, the PP-19, sits 38% higher at 18.0 degrees.
  • Fastest bullet in the class is the PW7A2 at 576 m/s, roughly 71% faster than the slowest, the CZ3A1 at 336 m/s.
  • The SCW-10 ranks 7th of 10 on recoil variation and 7th of 10 on velocity. It took the smallest recoil cut of any weapon in Update 1.3.3.0, so it benefited least from the patch that made everything else predictable.
  • The KV9 is the only weapon in Battlefield 6 that gained muzzle velocity in 1.3.3.0. Every other entry in EA's 50-line velocity table went down.
  • 9 of the 10 SMGs are locked. Only the SGX is available from your first match.

How Many SMGs Are in Battlefield 6?

Ten. EA's Loadout Creation and Weapon Classes page, which carries a "Recently Updated for Season 4" tag, lists the full roster with each unlock route attached. EA describes the class like this: "Lightweight true sub machine guns and personal defense weapons, SMGs are designed for close-quarters engagements with the highest average fire rate among all Primary Weapons. It's also the Signature Weapon of the Engineer Class."

That last sentence matters in Closed Weapon modes, where EA restricts you to your class Signature Weapon plus Carbines, DMRs and Shotguns. Play Engineer there and an SMG is your only Primary.

Recoil variation is the figure to read first. It is EA's own measure of how much a weapon's kick differs shot to shot, and a lower number means the pattern you learn in the Firing Range is the pattern you get in a match. Velocity decides how far ahead of a sprinting target you need to aim.

Why Update 1.3.3.0 Still Sets Every SMG Number

Because the current live build did not touch the class. We read the WEAPONS changelog in Game Update 1.4.3.0 line by line: it covers sniper reticles, the Interdictor rework and attachment fixes, and it contains zero SMG entries. Update 1.4.3.5 and 1.4.4.0 do not exist yet, both returning a 404 on EA's site as of September 22, 2026. So 1.3.3.0 remains the governing balance pass for all ten guns.

That patch is also why the class feels different from launch. EA cut recoil variation across the whole arsenal, explaining in a Developer Note that the goal was "more predictable recoil control during sustained/prolonged engagements allowing for more situations to define your scenario through skill." It slowed bullets down at the same time: "Bullet Drag has been increased by 40% across all weapons and by 100% when using Match Grade ammo."

Two other 1.3.3.0 changes hit SMGs harder than most classes. Stomach and limb damage for automatic weapons dropped from 1x to 0.84x, and chest damage against armour dropped the same way. Dispersion growth rose by 14% on average, and EA was specific about who pays for it: "Weapons with higher damage output now experience a more aggressive increase in dispersion, especially immediately after the first shot." A fast-firing gun spraying into a torso now loses more of its damage to the 0.84x multiplier than a slower, heavier weapon does.

Which Battlefield 6 SMG Has the Lowest Recoil?

Two of them, exactly. The UMG-40 and the SL9 both land on 13.0 degrees of recoil variation after 1.3.3.0, and nothing else in the class is close. The gap to third place is 5.0 degrees, which is a 38% jump, and it is the cleanest tier break anywhere in the SMG roster.

The two guns arrived there by different routes. The SL9 was already the most consistent SMG in the game before the patch at 16.2 degrees and got a 19.8% trim. The UMG-40 started at 17.4 degrees and took a 25.3% cut, the second-largest reduction of the 39 entries in EA's recoil table, beaten only by the SOR-556 MK2 at 26.6%. In other words, the SMG class contains both the single biggest winner tier and, as you are about to see, the single biggest loser of that same patch.

EA's own catalogue description explains what the UMG-40 is for: "A renowned polymer SMG with a low rate of fire, chambered in .40 Caliber. Outperforms its peers at mid range encounters." A low rate of fire is usually a downside in a close-quarters class. Paired with 13.0 degrees of variation and 467 m/s, it is what makes the gun function as a short carbine.

At the other end, the CZ3A1 (50.8 degrees) and the KV9 (50.0 degrees) are nearly four times as erratic as the leaders. The full spread across the class is 13.0 to 50.8 degrees, a 3.91x range, which is far wider than the velocity spread of 1.71x. Recoil variation, not bullet speed, is what separates these ten guns.

The SCW-10 Paradox

Here is the number that started this article. In EA's 1.3.3.0 recoil table, the SCW-10 went from 35.0 degrees to 33.5 degrees. That is a 4.3% reduction, and it is the smallest cut given to any of the 39 entries listed. Second smallest was the AK-205 at 5.1%. The class average cut was 16.1%.

So while the rest of the arsenal was being made consistent, the SCW-10 essentially stood still, and it now sits 7th of 10 on recoil variation. On velocity it is 7th as well, at 398 m/s, behind even the free SGX's 378 m/s by only 20 m/s. It also took the largest velocity loss in the class, down 7.01%.

None of that makes it a bad gun. EA describes it as "Chambered in 10mm, this modular modern SMG offers increased stopping power where other PDWs fall short," and stopping power is exactly the stat that never appears in a recoil or velocity table. What the numbers do tell you is where it wins: close enough that a 400 m/s bullet and an inconsistent pattern cost you nothing. Push it into the mid-range fights the UMG-40 is built for and it loses on both axes.

The Arithmetic EA Did Not Publish

EA lists per-weapon numbers and never totals them. We did, using only the ten guns on the Season 4 SMG roster.

  • Class mean recoil variation fell from 35.58 to 30.16 degrees. Across all ten guns that is 355.8 degrees down to 301.6, a 15.2% reduction to the class as a whole.
  • The mean per-gun cut was 16.1%, which is higher than the class total reduction because the guns that improved most were already the tightest.
  • Mean muzzle velocity fell from 460.6 to 439.8 m/s, an average change of -4.41% per weapon.
  • SMGs are now marginally less consistent than LMGs. Our same calculation over EA's nine rostered LMGs produced a mean of 29.52 degrees, so the SMG class sits 0.64 degrees above it. A class built for close quarters is, on average, no steadier than the class built to hold a lane. Our full breakdown is in the Battlefield 6 best LMG ranking.

One caution on that comparison: EA's 1.3.3.0 table includes an RPKM entry at 17.5 degrees that is not on the nine-weapon LMG roster, so we excluded it. Including it drops the LMG mean further and widens the gap.

Which SMG Has the Fastest Bullet?

The PW7A2 at 576 m/s, and it is not close. Second is the USG-90 at 543 m/s, then the SL9 at 486 m/s. The bottom three are the SGX (378), the KV9 (362) and the CZ3A1 (336).

The KV9 deserves its own line. Of the 50 entries in EA's 1.3.3.0 velocity table, 49 got slower. One got faster: the KV9, up 4.02% from 348 to 362 m/s. It is the only positive number in the entire table, and it still leaves the gun 9th of 10 in its own class.

Pair velocity with recoil for a practical read. The PW7A2 combines the fastest bullet in the class with the fourth-lowest variation at 27.8 degrees, making it the most forgiving SMG for fights that drift past close range. The USG-90 has the second-fastest bullet but the third-worst pattern at 35.5 degrees, so its speed only pays off in controlled bursts.

How to See Recoil Variation in Your Own Matches

You do not have to take EA's table on faith. Game Update 1.4.2.0, released August 18, 2026, added an optional ADS Dispersion Crosshair to the settings. Turn it on and the game draws your actual spread cone while you are aiming down sights.

Fire a sustained burst with the SL9, then the same burst with the CZ3A1, and the difference between 13.0 and 50.8 degrees stops being abstract. It is also the fastest way to feel the 14% dispersion growth increase, and it explains the most common complaint about high-variation guns: shots that look centred still miss, because the cone opened faster than the crosshair suggested.

Every Battlefield 6 SMG Unlock, and How Long It Takes

Nine of the ten SMGs are gated, and the gates are not the same kind of work.

  • Career Rank, 5 guns. PW5A3 at 6, PW7A2 at 19, UMG-40 at 29, USG-90 at 36, KV9 at 45. This is pure account progression, and it is the only route to the joint-best gun in the class. See our Career Rank cap guide for the full ladder.
  • Assignments, 3 guns. SCW-10 via CLOSE QUARTERS 1, SL9 via CLOSE QUARTERS 2, CZ3A1 via NIGHTFALL CATCH-UP 2. Assignments are challenge sets, not rank thresholds, and the CLOSE QUARTERS pair must be done in order.
  • Catch-Up Challenge, 1 gun. The PP-19 comes from the Season 3 Catch-Up Challenge.
  • Free, 1 gun. The SGX.

That shape is worth naming plainly: both joint-best guns on recoil are behind a gate. The UMG-40 needs Career Rank 29 and the SL9 needs the second assignment in a two-part chain. If you want the most consistent SMG in Battlefield 6, there is no shortcut through the weapon list. Our weapon unlock and fastest leveling guide covers the efficient routes, and the full weapon tier list puts SMGs against the other classes.

Career Rank 29 and 45 are a lot of matches, and assignment chains do not care how good your aim is. Our team plays on your account by hand, at your pace, and charges only for the progress you actually need.

What Is Not an SMG in Battlefield 6

Two weapons get miscounted constantly. The ES 5.7, unlocked at Career Rank 24, and the vz. 61, unlocked through Assignment NIGHTFALL CATCH-UP 1, are both Secondary weapons on EA's list, not Primaries. They occupy your sidearm slot. If you saw a "12 SMGs" count somewhere, this is almost always why.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best SMG in Battlefield 6? On EA's published numbers the UMG-40 and the SL9 tie for the lowest recoil variation in the class at 13.0 degrees, with the SL9 holding a velocity edge at 486 m/s against 467 m/s. For mid-range fights those are the two strongest picks. The SCW-10 remains the most popular close-quarters choice, but it ranks 7th of 10 on both recoil variation and velocity.

How many SMGs are in Battlefield 6? Ten: SGX, PW5A3, PW7A2, UMG-40, USG-90, KV9, SCW-10, SL9, CZ3A1 and PP-19. The ES 5.7 and the vz. 61 are Secondary weapons, not SMGs.

Did Update 1.4.3.0 change any SMGs? No. The WEAPONS section of Game Update 1.4.3.0, live since September 15, 2026, contains no SMG entries. All current SMG ballistics come from Game Update 1.3.3.0.

Which SMG has the fastest bullet in Battlefield 6? The PW7A2 at 576 m/s, unlocked at Career Rank 19. The slowest is the CZ3A1 at 336 m/s.

Why does the SCW-10 feel better than its stats? Because its stats do not include stopping power. EA describes it as a 10mm SMG that "offers increased stopping power where other PDWs fall short." Its advantage sits at ranges short enough that a 398 m/s bullet and 33.5 degrees of variation do not cost you a kill.

What is recoil variation in Battlefield 6? It is EA's published measure, in degrees, of how much a weapon's recoil differs between shots. Lower means the pattern repeats, so learned recoil control transfers into a match. Update 1.3.3.0 cut it across the arsenal, reducing the SMG class mean from 35.58 to 30.16 degrees.

Which class uses SMGs? The Engineer. EA lists the SMG as the Engineer's Signature Weapon, which means it is the only Primary class of weapon available to Engineers in Closed Weapon experiences, alongside Carbines, DMRs and Shotguns.
