Applies to: Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, on Game Update 1.4.3.0 (dated September 14, 2026, live September 15) during the current season, Season 4: Naval Warfare. Every ballistic number below comes from the last full balance overhaul, Game Update 1.3.3.0, because 1.4.3.0 contains zero balance entries for any rated assault rifle.
Quick Answer
- The SOR-556 MK2 is the best assault rifle in Battlefield 6 right now. It sits at 12.7 degrees of recoil variation, which is the lowest figure of any assault rifle, and its 768 m/s muzzle velocity is second-best in the class.
- It also took the single largest recoil cut in the entire game. Its 26.6% reduction in Game Update 1.3.3.0 is the biggest of all 39 recoil entries EA published, across every weapon category.
- The L85A3 is the velocity king at 778 m/s and finishes third on recoil, which makes it the better pick at long range.
- The Career Rank 50 capstone, the TR-7, is not an upgrade. It ranks 8th of 10 rated assault rifles on recoil and dead last on velocity at 604 m/s.
- Assault rifles are the least consistent of the three automatic classes. Our class average is 31.13 degrees, against 30.16 for SMGs and 29.52 for the nine rostered LMGs.
- Only one of the eleven assault rifles is free from the start. The rest sit behind Career Ranks, assignments, catch-up challenges or the Season 4 Battle Pass.
Battlefield 6 has more assault rifles than any other primary category, and EA's own description of them is blunt about their role: "These fully-automatic, maneuverable, and highly-modular all-around rifles are the cornerstone of aggressive and adaptable loadouts. Without question, it's an Assault Class' Signature Weapon."
The problem is that "all-around" tells you nothing about which one to grind for. Community tier lists mostly rank these guns by feel, and feel is exactly what Game Update 1.3.3.0 changed: it rewrote recoil variation and bullet velocity across the arsenal, and it hit assault rifles unevenly, with cuts ranging from 13.4% to 26.6% inside the same class.
So we pulled EA's published balance tables, isolated every assault rifle, sorted the class end to end on both axes, and checked each gun against the in-game catalogue for how it actually unlocks.
How many assault rifles are in Battlefield 6?
There are eleven assault rifles in Battlefield 6 as of Season 4: Naval Warfare. In the order the in-game catalogue lists them, with their unlock condition:
- M433 — unlocked by default
- B36A4 — Career Rank 14
- SOR-556 MK2 — Career Rank 25
- AK4D — Career Rank 35
- TR-7 — Career Rank 50
- KORD 6P67 — Assignment: RAPID FIRE 1
- NVO-228E — Assignment: RAPID FIRE 2
- L85A3 — Assignment: RAPID FIRE 3
- VCR-2 — Season 2 Catch-Up Challenge (originally in the Battle Pass)
- M16A4 — Season 3 Catch-Up Challenge (originally in the Battle Pass)
- EF88 — Season 4 Battle Pass
Ten of those eleven appear in the 1.3.3.0 balance tables. The EF88 does not, because it arrived with Season 4, after that update shipped. Every ranking below therefore covers ten rated assault rifles, and we flag the EF88 separately rather than inventing numbers for it.
One naming note, because EA is not internally consistent: the catalogue spells the Rank 50 rifle TR-7 while the patch tables write TR7, and the same rifle shows up as KORD 6P67 and Kord 6P67 depending on the page.
Which numbers actually decide an assault rifle?
Two, and EA publishes both.
Recoil variation, measured in degrees, decides gunfights. It is not raw kick, it is how much the kick differs shot to shot: a low number means the gun repeats the same pattern and you can learn it, a high number means it is partly random no matter how good your control is. EA said as much when it shipped 1.3.3.0: "We've reduced recoil variation across the arsenal to make weapon behavior more predictable and controllable. Weapons should feel less erratic during sustained fire while retaining their individual recoil characteristics."
Bullet velocity, in metres per second, decides how much you have to lead a moving target and how quickly your rounds arrive at range.
Notably, 1.3.3.0 cut velocity on every assault rifle while also cutting recoil on every assault rifle. Guns became more controllable and slower at the same time. Class average velocity fell from 728.7 m/s to 689.0 m/s, a 5.4% drop, while class total recoil fell from 390.9 degrees to 311.3 degrees, a 20.4% drop. That trade is the most important thing to understand about how the class plays now: the skill floor dropped, and the range ceiling dropped with it.

| # | Assault rifle | Recoil before | Recoil after | Change | Velocity after | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SOR-556 MK2 | 17.3 | 12.7 | -26.6% | 768 m/s | Career Rank 25 |
| 2 | AK4D | 25.4 | 20.0 | -21.3% | 680 m/s | Career Rank 35 |
| 3 | L85A3 | 29.4 | 22.8 | -22.4% | 778 m/s | RAPID FIRE 3 |
| 4 | B36A4 | 37.4 | 28.0 | -25.1% | 740 m/s | Career Rank 14 |
| 5 | KORD 6P67 | 35.3 | 28.9 | -18.1% | 724 m/s | RAPID FIRE 1 |
| 6 | NVO-228E | 36.8 | 28.9 | -21.5% | 626 m/s | RAPID FIRE 2 |
| 7 | M16A4 | 46.4 | 37.5 | -19.2% | 680 m/s | S3 Catch-Up |
| 8 | TR-7 | 47.1 | 40.8 | -13.4% | 604 m/s | Career Rank 50 |
| 9 | M433 | 50.9 | 41.4 | -18.7% | 630 m/s | Default |
| 10 | VCR-2 | 64.9 | 50.3 | -22.5% | 660 m/s | S2 Catch-Up |
| — | EF88 | not listed | not listed | — | not listed | S4 Battle Pass |
KORD 6P67 and NVO-228E tie at 28.9 degrees; we break the tie on velocity, where the KORD is 98 m/s faster.
The gap is the headline. The worst assault rifle in the class, the VCR-2, is 3.96 times less consistent than the best one. That is a far wider spread than the class averages suggest, and it means "assault rifle" is not a meaningful loadout decision on its own. Picking the SOR-556 MK2 over the default M433 is worth more than any single attachment you can bolt onto either of them.
The class also did not get uniformly better. Per-gun cuts averaged 20.88%, but the VCR-2 took a 22.5% cut and still finished last, while the TR-7 took the smallest cut in the class at 13.4% and fell down the order because of it.
Which assault rifle has the fastest bullet?
The L85A3 at 778 m/s, narrowly ahead of the SOR-556 MK2 at 768 m/s. Full class order after 1.3.3.0:
- L85A3 — 778 m/s
- SOR-556 MK2 — 768 m/s
- B36A4 — 740 m/s
- KORD 6P67 — 724 m/s
- AK4D — 680 m/s
- M16A4 — 680 m/s
- VCR-2 — 660 m/s
- M433 — 630 m/s
- NVO-228E — 626 m/s
- TR-7 — 604 m/s
The spread here is 1.29 times from best to worst, far tighter than the recoil spread, which is why velocity should be your tiebreaker rather than your first filter. Sort on recoil, then use velocity to choose between guns that are close.
Two rifles are genuinely dual-threat. The L85A3 is first on velocity and third on recoil; the SOR-556 MK2 is first on recoil and second on velocity. If you own both: SOR-556 MK2 inside medium range where recoil consistency decides the trade, L85A3 for open Season 4 map lanes where the flatter travel time saves you a lead adjustment.
The NVO-228E is the trap in this table. Its 28.9 degrees puts it a respectable sixth on recoil, which is what most tier lists see, but its 626 m/s is ninth of ten. It is a close-quarters gun wearing an assault rifle's stat card.
Is the M16A4 burst as unreliable as players say?
Partly, and the numbers explain why the complaint keeps resurfacing.
The M16A4 sits at 37.5 degrees of recoil variation, seventh of ten. Every gun above it is in the 12.7 to 28.9 band, so there is a real cliff between the top six and the M16A4. In a burst weapon that cliff is more punishing than the number suggests: an automatic rifle lets you correct across a long string of shots, while a burst gun gives you three rounds and then takes the trigger away. If variation scatters the second and third rounds, you never get to walk them back on target.
What is not true is that the M16A4 was singled out. Its 19.2% recoil cut in 1.3.3.0 is close to the class average of 20.88%, so it received a normal share of the balance pass; it simply started from a worse place, at 46.4 degrees, than most of the class. Its 680 m/s velocity is mid-pack and ties the AK4D.
As a package, this is a range-limited burst rifle that rewards patient single bursts and punishes sprays, and the Season 3 Catch-Up Challenge needed to unlock it is real work for a gun that finishes in the bottom half of its own class.
Why is the Rank 50 TR-7 so hard to control?
Because it is, on EA's own numbers, one of the worst rifles in the category, and it received the smallest correction of any of them.
The TR-7 came out of 1.3.3.0 at 40.8 degrees of recoil variation, 8th of 10, and at 604 m/s it has the slowest bullet of any assault rifle in the game. Its 13.4% cut was the smallest in the class, well under the 20.88% average, so the update that fixed everyone else's consistency barely touched it.
This matters more than a normal bottom-of-the-table finish, because the TR-7 is the Career Rank 50 unlock. It is the last assault rifle the progression system hands you, positioned as a reward, and it is worse than the SOR-556 MK2 you already unlocked at Career Rank 25. Anyone treating the rank ladder as a power curve will hit Rank 50, switch to their new rifle, and get worse.
The practical read: run it in short controlled bursts at close and medium range, where its velocity deficit never comes up and its variation has fewer shots to compound over. At long range you are fighting both weaknesses at once.
If you are climbing toward Rank 50 for the unlocks along the way rather than this specific gun, our Battlefield 6 max level and Career Rank cap guide covers what each rank tier gives you.
How do assault rifles compare to SMGs and LMGs?
Worse than most players expect, on the axis that matters.
Using the same 1.3.3.0 tables, here are the post-update class averages for recoil variation:
- Nine rostered LMGs — 29.52 degrees
- Submachine guns — 30.16 degrees
- Assault rifles — 31.13 degrees
Assault rifles are the least consistent of the three automatic classes, which is counterintuitive for a category sold as the balanced, do-everything option.
The averages hide the real story, though. The class contains both the single most consistent automatic weapon in the game and a rifle nearly four times worse than it. It is not bad, it is bimodal, and your specific gun matters far more here than in the SMG or LMG rosters, where the weapons cluster tightly.
If you want the direct comparisons, we ranked the other two classes the same way: every Battlefield 6 SMG ranked by recoil and velocity, every Battlefield 6 LMG ranked by recoil and velocity, and for long range, Battlefield 6 sniper rifles and their sweet spots. The cross-class picture is in our Battlefield 6 best weapons tier list.
How do you unlock every Battlefield 6 assault rifle?
Four different systems gate this class, and only one of them is pure play time:
- Default: M433, available from your first match.
- Career Rank: B36A4 at 14, SOR-556 MK2 at 25, AK4D at 35, TR-7 at 50. This is the main grind, and it gates the best gun in the class at Rank 25.
- Assignments: KORD 6P67, NVO-228E and L85A3 come from the RAPID FIRE 1, 2 and 3 assignments. These are objective-based rather than rank-based, so you can chase the L85A3 long before Rank 50.
- Battle Pass and catch-up: the EF88 is in the Season 4 Battle Pass, while the VCR-2 and M16A4 moved to Season 2 and Season 3 Catch-Up Challenges after their original passes ended.
If you only care about performance, push Career Rank to 25 for the SOR-556 MK2 and run the RAPID FIRE chain for the L85A3. That is the best recoil gun and the best velocity gun, and nothing after Rank 25 improves your assault rifle. Frequently asked questions
What is the best assault rifle in Battlefield 6? The SOR-556 MK2. It has the lowest recoil variation in the class at 12.7 degrees, the second-highest velocity at 768 m/s, and it took the largest recoil reduction of any weapon in Game Update 1.3.3.0 at 26.6%. It unlocks at Career Rank 25.
Is the TR-7 worth grinding to Career Rank 50 for? Not for performance. The TR-7 is 8th of 10 rated assault rifles on recoil variation at 40.8 degrees and last on velocity at 604 m/s, and it received the smallest recoil cut in the class. The SOR-556 MK2 at Rank 25 is a straight upgrade over it.
Where does the EF88 rank? We cannot rank it honestly yet. It arrived with Season 4, after Game Update 1.3.3.0 shipped, so it has no published recoil or velocity entry. Game Update 1.4.3.0 lists an EF88 stats fix and a canted-iron-sights icon fix, but no balance values. We will add it when EA publishes numbers.
Did Game Update 1.4.3.0 change any assault rifles? No. It contains zero balance entries for any of the ten rated assault rifles. Every recoil and velocity figure in this guide is still governed by Game Update 1.3.3.0, the last full balance overhaul.
Which assault rifle is best for long range in Battlefield 6? The L85A3. Its 778 m/s is the fastest bullet in the class and its 22.8 degrees of recoil variation is third-best, so it holds a pattern at the distances where slower rifles like the TR-7 and NVO-228E start forcing you to lead targets. It unlocks through the RAPID FIRE 3 assignment rather than a Career Rank.
Are assault rifles better than SMGs in Battlefield 6? Not on consistency. Our class averages from the same tables put assault rifles at 31.13 degrees against 30.16 for SMGs. That average is misleading, though, since assault rifles contain both the most and one of the least consistent automatic weapons in the game. Your specific rifle matters more than the class.
