Applies to: Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, on Game Update 1.4.3.0, which deployed Tuesday, September 15, 2026 as Season 4: Tidal Strike. That is still the newest update EA has published as of September 29, 2026, so every gadget, trait and Training Path below is the live version.

Quick Answer

  • There are four classes: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. Each one owns a Signature Gadget, a Signature Trait, a Signature Weapon category, exclusive throwables, an Active Ability and two Training Paths.
  • You are not locked into one. You can change class at every respawn, and in the loadout menu the class selector sits behind the Customize button, not the back button.
  • Every class has exactly two Training Paths, and only one is free. EA's wording: each class "offers two distinct Training Paths - one unlocked by Default, the other by completing a specific Class Assignment challenge set". Class Challenge Assignments unlock at Career Rank 10 and Weapon Challenge Assignments at Career Rank 13, so the second path is a progression reward, not a starting choice.
  • EA's own pages disagree about which Assault Training Path is the gated one. The progression page lists Frontliner as the Assault Class Assignment reward. The Assault class page heads its gated section "Breacher (Unlocked via Assault Class Assignment)". Details below.
  • Support has an ability the class page calls a "Secret Trait": it is the only class that can revive anyone on the team, not just its own squad.
  • Only one class is meant to kill armour. Assault launchers and Recon charges chip vehicles, but the Engineer's Anti Armor path is built to delete them.

The most common Battlefield 6 class question on r/Battlefield6 is not "which class is best". It is a variant of "why can nobody on my team kill a tank", followed by someone pointing out the thing the game never says out loud. One player put it plainly this week: "You can switch classes every time you respawn. It's that simple. I think many players don't know this because people don't switch to engineer to take out armor."

That is the real shape of the class system: not a character you pick once, but four loadout templates you rotate through as the match changes, each with a locked second half you have to earn. Everything below is verified against EA's four first-party class pages on the Battlefield 101 hub and EA's progression page.

What is actually in a Battlefield 6 class?

EA's loadout page defines a loadout as "Weapons, Gadgets, a Grenade and a Training Path, all focused around one of the four classes". The parts the class itself controls come to six:

  • Signature Gadget — one per class, always available: Adrenaline Injector, Repair Tool, Supply Bag, Motion Sensor.
  • Signature Trait — a permanent passive: Mission Focused, Mechanized Infantry, Field Sustainment, Passive Spot.
  • Signature Weapon — a category the class gets bonuses with: Assault Rifle, SMG, Light Machine Gun and Sniper Rifle respectively. This matters far more in Closed Weapon modes, where it is the primary category that class is steered towards.
  • Exclusive throwables — Concussive and Flash for Assault, Smoke and Incendiary for Support, Throwable Proximity Detector and Throwing Knife for Recon. EA notes the baseline is shared: "The Frag Grenade and all Melee Tools can be equipped to any loadout regardless of its Class."
  • Active Ability — a match-timed button: Rally Squad, Power Fix, Restock Allies, UAV Overwatch.
  • Training Path — the passive tree, two per class, one gated.

Several gadgets also carry restrictions that never show up in a tier list. The Engineer page states outright that "you are unable to equip two Launcher Gadgets in the same Loadout". Assault's Thermobaric and High Explosive launchers can each be equipped to a primary weapon using the Gadget Mount attachment for faster access, tying a gadget slot to an attachment choice. The Engineer's Vehicle Supply Crate will "resupply or reduce cooldowns on vehicle munitions, but not repair health".

Assault: the objective class, not the lone wolf

EA's own framing is a football metaphor: "Assault soldiers are to a squad as a striker is to an association football team". The page then argues against how most people play it, warning that "the true greats - the ones who define undefeated squads" are tacticians, not players who "forget the objective and focus on padding their K/D stat." The mechanics agree. The Signature Trait, Mission Focused, gives "faster progress with objectives, including arming and disarming M-COM explosives" plus a quicker in-combat cooldown so squadmates can deploy on you sooner. That second half is the underrated part: Assault turns itself into a spawn point fastest. Its closed-weapon identity is mid-range, and EA puts a number on it: the Assault Rifle advantage lands "12-50 meters out". Pair that with the Assault Ladder and Deploy Beacon and the class is really a mobility and reinforcement tool wearing a rifleman's kit.

  • Frontliner is the default path: Adrenaline Rush gives squadmates who deploy on you the Adrenaline Injector effect, then Soft Landing reduces fall damage, then Quicker Recovery speeds up passive regeneration.
  • Breacher is the gated path: Extra Grenades, then Agile Shooter for a reduced movement penalty while firing.

Where EA's own pages disagree about Assault

EA's progression page lists what each Class Assignment rewards. For three classes it names the path the class page marks as gated: Engineer gets "Combat Engineer Training Path", Support gets "Fire Support Training Path", Recon gets "Spec Ops Training Path". For Assault the same page says "Frontliner Training Path and Loadout Slot".

EA's Assault class page says the opposite. It presents Frontliner as the ungated path and heads the second section, verbatim, "Breacher (Unlocked via Assault Class Assignment)". The three other class pages use the identical heading pattern and match the progression page exactly. Only Assault does not.

The class pages are the more specific source and are internally consistent across all four classes, so Breacher being the gated Assault path is the reading to plan around. Not the only self-contradiction here either: the Support page calls the same gadget "Portable Cover" in one line and "Deployable Cover" in another, and describes its Active Ability as "Active Medic" one sentence after naming it Restock Allies.

Engineer: the only class built to delete vehicles

Engineer is the answer to the tank complaint, and the community knows it. From this week's thread arguing every class should get anti-tank tools: "If you wanna burst tanks, play engineer. That's literally the whole role of them, destroying everything that is flying or driving."

The Signature Trait is Mechanized Infantry. The Signature Weapon is the SMG, with "improved hip-fire control" and a stated band of "about 7-25 meters out" in Closed Weapon modes. The Active Ability is Power Fix: "Repair Tool fixes with 50% efficiency for 10 seconds". Engineer's gadget list is the deepest in the game and still growing: the Active Locking Air-Defense Launcher is tagged "NEW AS OF SEASON 2", so class kits are seasonal content, not launch-frozen.

  • Anti Armor is the default path: Extra Rockets, then Launcher Proficiency for faster launcher reloads, then Devastating Impact, which makes "vehicles you damage take longer to repair".
  • Combat Engineer is the gated path, and it is a vehicle-crew tree rather than an anti-vehicle one. Gadget Fortification means "Repairing a friendly Gadget permanently increases its maximum health", Overheat Resistance slows heat buildup, and Vehicle Regeneration regenerates a vehicle's health simply by occupying it, as long as it is above its critical damage state.

One trap costs people hours: repairing vehicles as an Engineer does not level vehicles. Repairs feed Career Rank and Battle Pass XP, not Hardware XP, so unlocks need you in the seat — see our vehicle unlocks and XP farm guide.

Support: the class with the "Secret Trait"

Support's headline number is one most players never see written down. EA's class page labels it a "Secret Trait":

"Secret Trait: Team Revives. The Support Class is the only Class that can revive teammates, not just squadmates. That means on a 32-person team, a Support Class can not only revive the three other members of their squad, but every single one of their 31 allies."

That is a ten-times larger revive pool than every other class, and the strongest argument for keeping one Support in a stack. The Signature Trait, Field Sustainment, distributes health packs to teammates who directly interact with you. The Signature Weapon is the LMG, which "does not suffer sprint speed penalty with this weapon type" — the fix for the usual LMG repositioning problem, and the reason Support is the class to bring for LMG mastery. Our best LMG ranking covers which ones hold recoil.

  • Combat Medic is the default path.
  • Fire Support is the gated path, and its Level 1, Explosives Resistant, is one of the better hard numbers in the class system: a "25% reduction on incoming explosive splash damage while prone or shooting from mounted positions".

The page also buries a survival tip: "On Fire? Stop, Drop and Prone. Fire damage is reduced on any player who goes prone within it."

Recon: spotting first, sniping second

Battlefield 6 Recon class key art of a ghillie-suited marksman aiming a scoped rifle at the camera, labelled REVEAL and CONCEAL

Recon's Signature Trait, Passive Spot, was reworked after the Battlefield 6 Beta and is stricter than people expect. EA states that Recon players "need to aim down sights at an enemy, but they also need to be relatively stationary or slow moving, and have a high level of zoom to spot enemies at far distances". A Recon jogging with a 1x optic spots nothing.

The Signature Weapon is the Sniper Rifle, with faster rechambering, decreased scope sway and improved breath control. EA notes that in Closed Weapon modes Recon is "the designated long-range specialist" because "the only long-range alternative for other classes is the DMR" — which is why the SVDM DMR loadout matters to the other three.

Recon's gadget list is the most recently expanded: the Handheld Jammer is marked "NEW AS OF SEASON 3" and the Hardware Suppression System "NEW AS OF SEASON 2", the latter able to "directly counter up to three enemy Gadgets" per pulse.

  • Sniper is the default path, ending in Confirmed Kill: "Enemies you headshot with Sniper Rifles cannot be revived by their teammates." In modes with limited reinforcements that is a team-level ability, not a personal one.
  • Spec Ops is the gated path, and it is a stealth tree rather than a sniping one: Stealth Tactics reduces crouched, prone and takedown noise, Gadget Awareness spots enemy gadgets, and Low Profile clears your combat state faster when you go prone.

Which Battlefield 6 class should you actually play?

There is no single best class, but there is a best class per problem, and the fastest way to raise your impact is to stop treating the pick as permanent:

  • Enemy armour is running the map: Engineer, Anti Armor path, with at least one launcher gadget equipped — EA's own guidance is explicit that an Anti Armor loadout is wasted without one.
  • You cannot hold an objective: Assault. Mission Focused speeds up the capture and the faster combat-state cooldown turns you into a spawn beacon.
  • Your squad keeps wiping: Support, for Team Revives across 31 allies.
  • You have no information: Recon, but with a high-magnification optic and slow movement, or Passive Spot will not trigger.

For progression, the practical point is that half of every class sits behind Class Assignments that do not appear until Career Rank 10, and that ladder is the same one gating attachments and Hardware tiers. FAQ

How many classes are in Battlefield 6? Four: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. Each has its own Signature Gadget, Signature Trait, Signature Weapon category, exclusive throwables, Active Ability and two Training Paths.

Can you change class in Battlefield 6 mid-match? Yes. You can pick a different class every time you respawn from the deploy screen, and swapping class does not reset any class progress.

How do you change class in the loadout menu? Use the Customize input on the loadout screen rather than the back button, then cycle classes with the shoulder buttons on controller. Selecting the class name shown on your current loadout card also opens the class list.

What is the best class in Battlefield 6? There is no single best class. Engineer is the only class properly equipped to destroy vehicles, Support has the widest revive reach, Assault captures and reinforces objectives fastest, and Recon supplies information. Rotate to the one your team is missing.

How do you unlock the second Training Path? By completing that class's Class Assignment challenge set. Class Challenge Assignments become available at Career Rank 10.

Which class can revive anyone on the team? Support. Every other class can only revive its own squad.

Does repairing vehicles as an Engineer level up vehicles? No. Repair actions award Career Rank and Battle Pass XP but not Hardware XP, so vehicle unlocks require crewing the vehicle.

Are class gadgets still being added? Yes. Recon's Handheld Jammer is marked new as of Season 3, and both Recon's Hardware Suppression System and the Engineer's Active Locking Air-Defense Launcher are marked new as of Season 2.
