Quick answer: The ELR-40 is the Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle added with Battlefield 6 Season 5 on 13 October 2026, and it has two different sweet spots depending on its magazine. EA has published the shape but not the numbers: its standard configuration "features a very long-range sweet spot", while single-shot mode "moves the sweet spot to shorter distances." One player's Portal testing (community-measured, not confirmed by EA) puts the standard sweet spot at 150 to 180 m and the single-shot band at a one-shot kill to the upper torso from 30 to 80 m, and anywhere on the body from 44 to 69 m. Third-party guide sites and trackers, not EA, report the rifle unlocks free at Tier 5 of the Recruit Path in the Season 5 Battle Pass and the Single Shot magazine at weapon rank 13 — but the full tracker build needs rank 40.

This guide separates what EA has confirmed from what players have measured, compares both sweet spots against the sniper class, and covers how to unlock, build and counter the rifle as of Update 2.1.1.0.

What is the ELR-40 in Battlefield 6?

The ELR-40 went live at Season 5 launch alongside the Mk 24, RSPR and Z84M. EA has described it twice, and the two descriptions are not quite the same pitch.

The Season 5 roadmap leans on range: "Built for extreme long-range engagements, the ELR-40 features the best bullet drag performance and the furthest sweet spot in its weapon archetype, making it particularly well suited for the open sightlines of our new map, Area 51. A custom single-shot ammunition option completely changes its role, shifting that sweet spot into close range with functionality that longtime Battlefield players may find familiar."

The Update 2.1.1.0 notes, published the day before launch, are more measured: "A versatile Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle built for deadly long-range engagements. Its standard configuration features a very long-range sweet spot, while its single-shot mode moves the sweet spot to shorter distances, giving Recon players greater flexibility across changing engagements."

Notice the drift: "close range" in the roadmap became "shorter distances" in the patch notes. The testing below shows the second description is the accurate one.

When we covered the four Season 5 weapons before launch, we flagged one number to watch: EA's "furthest sweet spot in its weapon archetype" claim had to beat 133 m, the far edge of the L115A3's band. Two days after launch, there is now a measured answer.

What is the ELR-40 sweet spot?

A sweet spot in Battlefield 6 is the distance band where a bolt-action round deals enough damage to kill a full-health soldier with an upper-body shot. Outside it, the same hit leaves the target alive. EA still has not published the ELR-40's band in any patch note or on ea.com, so every figure in this section is community-measured and should be treated as unconfirmed until EA's weapon roster is updated.

The most detailed test so far was posted to r/Battlefield6 on 15 October 2026 by a player who measured both magazines in a Portal testing session. Their summary, verbatim: "it is a one shot kill to the upper torso from 30-80m. It is a one shot kill anywhere from 44-69m. With a regular mag, its sweetspot is 150-180m as described."

Asked whether the 44 to 69 m band really covers limbs, the tester replied: "Yes, 1HK from ankle to wrist and back."

Standard magazine150-180 m30 m
Single-shot, upper torso30-80 m50 m
Single-shot, any hit location44-69 m25 m

Outside those bands, single-shot body hits fall to damage the tester described as "within the minimum damage of the weakest sidearm". Miss the band and you are left with a slow bolt and a wounded target.

Does the ELR-40 really have the furthest sweet spot?

If the community figures hold, yes, and by a clear margin. Here is the standard ELR-40 band against the four bolt-action bands EA published in Update 1.3.3.0 and the Interdictor band from Update 1.4.3.0.

RifleSweet spotBand widthSource

M2010 ESR75-100 m25 mEA Update 1.3.3.0
SV-9854-75 m21 mEA Update 1.3.3.0

The standard ELR-40 band starts 17 m beyond where the L115A3's band ends, and its far edge at 180 m is 20 m past the Interdictor's 160 m. The Interdictor overlaps it from 150 to 160 m, but beyond 160 m no other sniper in the live game has a published sweet spot. What it does not have is a wider window: at 30 m it is narrower than both the L115A3 and the Interdictor, so ranging your target still matters.

Update 1.3.3.0 also raised bullet drag "by 40% across all weapons and by 100% when using Match Grade ammo", so "the best bullet drag performance" is the ELR-40's real long-range edge.

Third-party stat trackers list the ELR-40 at 788 m/s muzzle velocity, which would make it faster than the M2010 ESR and Mini Scout at 760 m/s — the fastest snipers in EA's 1.3.3.0 velocity table. EA has not published an ELR-40 velocity, so treat that figure as a tracker reading, not a confirmed stat.

Why does the single-shot ELR-40 one-shot limbs?

In Update 1.3.3.0, EA cut sniper rifle damage to the stomach and limbs from 0.8x to 0.67x for the entire class. A body shot to the leg is supposed to be worth two-thirds of a chest hit. Yet the community test reports a single-shot ELR-40 kill "from ankle to wrist" inside 44 to 69 m. For that to be true, the single-shot mode has to either carry its own limb multiplier or deal enough raw damage that 0.67x still kills. The tester's own read was that the multiplier "basically goes from .85 to 1" in that band.

EA has not published the ELR-40's damage table or multipliers, so we cannot tell you which it is. There is precedent for the first option: Update 1.4.3.0 gave the Interdictor its own rule, "Limb damage now matches chest damage". What we can tell you is that EA's own sniper class description still says snipers are "capable of one-shot confirmed kills outside of Hardcore modes so long as it's a headshot". That description sits on a weapon-roster page stamped "Recently Updated for Season 4", which does not list the ELR-40 at all.

The player reaction has been immediate. One r/Battlefield6 thread about the rifle complained: "being one shotted to the chest constantly every five mins is wearing thin. The gun needs to be nerfed somehow as in its current state is almost impossible to play against." A reply in the same thread compared it to the Season 4 rifle: "The ELR single shot is much like the Interdictor, it has increased damage over other Snipers which makes its sweet spot bigger than the stated optimal range."

Will EA nerf the ELR-40?

EA has not announced an ELR-40 change. It has, however, already said bolt-actions are under review. In the Season 5 and Beyond article dated 1 October 2026, under the heading for 2027 plans, EA wrote: "We're also evaluating the balance and power of bolt-action sniper rifles as well as the ability of players to fight back against those weapons."

That sentence was published before the ELR-40 shipped, and it sits in the 2027 section, not in a hotfix list. A bolt-action pass is planned, the ELR-40 is likely to fall inside it, and there is no date. Update 2.1.1.0 did change two marksman weapons — the SVDM and M39 EMR got recoil changes that bite during sustained fire — but neither of its WEAPONS sections names the ELR-40. The only sniper-wide line is in REDSEC, where sniper and DMR ammunition capacity drops from 70 to 60 rounds.

If anything changes, the single-shot band is the likeliest target: fast kills across a mid-range band are exactly what EA's "ability of players to fight back" wording describes.

How do you unlock the ELR-40?

EA's own pages still do not say. The weapon roster page has not been updated for Season 5, and the Season 5 Battle Pass URL on ea.com returned a 404 when we checked on 15 October 2026.

Third-party guide sites such as Gfinity have reported the route since launch, unconfirmed by EA: the ELR-40 is a free reward at Tier 5 of the Recruit Path in the Season 5 Battle Pass, while the Mk 24, RSPR and Z84M each sit at Tier 11 of a different themed path. In Season 4, EA described the Recruit Path as the five-tier opener you complete before switching between themed paths. If Season 5 keeps that shape, the ELR-40 is the earliest new weapon anyone can reach.

EA's progression page says Battle Pass XP is "EARNED IN TANDEM WITH CAREER XP AT A 1:1 RATIO", so any Career XP moves you towards that fifth tier. Our Season 5 Battle Pass guide covers how the paths branch and what still carries over from Season 4.

Unlocking the rifle gets you the standard version only. The single-shot behaviour comes from an attachment, and attachments come from weapon rank.

How do you unlock the ELR-40 single-shot mode?

Two third-party sites, Battlefinity and All Things How, list the Single Shot magazine as a weapon-rank unlock at rank 13 on the ELR-40. That lines up with how EA describes Hardware progression generally: Hardware Rank "unlocks new functional additions to Hardware - e.g. weapon attachments, vehicle equipment - as well as other content like Camouflages".

The catch: EA says Hardware XP "Progresses Hardware Rank with Primary Weapons, Secondary Weapons, and Vehicles", so it comes from using the ELR-40 itself and Career XP does not level it. The per-minute weapon XP limit players have reported since launch, which EA has not confirmed and which is covered in our Battlefield 6 XP cap guide, would make that slower. A new ELR-40 is the 150 to 180 m rifle until you earn 13 ranks with it.

What is the best ELR-40 loadout?

A widely circulated build comes from the third-party stat tracker Battlefinity, which labels it its best ELR-40 build, last updated 14 October 2026. Here it is with the weapon rank each attachment unlocks at, as that tracker lists them. EA has not published these levels or point costs.

That is a 100-point build that needs weapon rank 40 to complete, because of the Anti-Glare Coating. You can run single shot from rank 13, but the scope arrives at 16, the suppressor at 21, the grip at 27 and the barrel at 29.

Players mostly argue the edges. One backs the CQB Suppressor because it "doesn't have the increased sway downside of the long suppressor"; another runs a flash hider and a variable-zoom optic "so you can adjust on the fly based on encounter distance".

For how Attachment Points and weapon ranks interact across the whole arsenal, see our attachment points breakdown. For how the ELR-40 compares to the rest of the class on EA's own numbers, our best sniper rifles guide covers every band and velocity.

Where should you use the ELR-40?

Pick the magazine for the map, not the other way round.

Standard magazine on Area 51. EA built the rifle's pitch around "the open sightlines of our new map, Area 51", and its own map guide singles out two positions. The Aircraft Control Tower: "At the start of the match, the upper floors serve as a powerful sniper nest overlooking much of the battlefield." And the Helipad, whose "elevation provides clear sightlines toward several objectives, making it a popular location for Recon players". A 150 to 180 m band is built for exactly those lines. Our Area 51 and Vegas Strip map guide walks through each objective.

Single shot for mid-range lanes. EA's guide calls Vegas Strip "a dense urban battlefield", and the tested 30 to 80 m upper-torso band suits its streets and hotel sightlines. Hold an angle at 44 to 69 m and, on the community figures, every hit is a kill. Inside 30 m, such as Area 51's "tighter infantry-focused spaces" underground, the single-shot round loses its edge.

Carry a real sidearm. Outside its band the single-shot ELR-40 is weak. The tester's advice: "If you've ever wanted to level the FN57, this is your moment."

How do you counter the ELR-40?

Until EA publishes a change, the counter is distance management.

  • Stay out of 44 to 69 m in the open. That is the band where any single-shot hit kills. Inside 30 m, a single-shot user is fighting with a slow bolt, so close the gap rather than trading at mid range.
  • Assume long-range Recons are on 150 m plus. Standard-magazine users on Area 51 want you just beyond where older snipers stopped being lethal. Break line of sight from the Control Tower and Helipad early.
  • Take the tower down. EA's map guide says of the Aircraft Control Tower: "Bring it down, and the fight shifts to the rubble below." That removes the best standard-magazine nest on the map.
  • Punish the bolt. Push between shots; a single-shot user has to reload after every round.

Want the rank-40 ELR-40 without the 40 ranks? Every attachment above, including the single-shot magazine, is locked behind Hardware XP on this one gun, and that is the grind our Battlefield 6 services take off your hands.

FAQ

What is the ELR-40 sweet spot in Battlefield 6? Community testing in Portal, not confirmed by EA, puts the standard-magazine sweet spot at 150 to 180 m. With the Single Shot magazine, it is a one-shot kill to the upper torso from 30 to 80 m and to any body part from 44 to 69 m. EA has confirmed the rifle has a "very long-range sweet spot" in standard configuration and that single-shot mode "moves the sweet spot to shorter distances", but has not published the numbers.

How do you unlock the ELR-40? Third-party guide sites such as Gfinity report it as a free reward at Tier 5 of the Recruit Path in the Season 5 Battle Pass. In Season 4 the Recruit Path was the five-tier opener every player completed first. EA's weapon roster page has not been updated for Season 5, so the route is not yet confirmed on an EA page.

What level is the ELR-40 single-shot magazine? Third-party sites, not EA, list the Single Shot magazine at weapon rank 13. Weapon rank comes from Hardware XP earned with the ELR-40 itself, so Career XP and Battle Pass progress do not unlock it.

Is the ELR-40 better than the L115A3? At long range, on the tested figures, yes. Its standard sweet spot starts at 150 m, 17 m beyond the far edge of the L115A3's 100 to 133 m band from Update 1.3.3.0. The L115A3's window is slightly wider at 33 m against roughly 30 m, and the ELR-40 adds a second, mid-range sweet spot the L115A3 does not have.

Is the ELR-40 getting nerfed? Nothing is announced. EA's Season 5 and Beyond article of 1 October 2026 says EA is "evaluating the balance and power of bolt-action sniper rifles as well as the ability of players to fight back against those weapons", but places that in its 2027 plans. Update 2.1.1.0 makes no ELR-40-specific change.
