FC 27 Evolutions Nerfed: EA Confirmed It's Deliberate — Are Evos Still Worth It?

Two weeks into FUT and the Evolutions tab feels broken. Upgrades that used to turn a fodder card into a starter now add two overall and a role. It is not a bug, it is not bad luck with Reward Picks, and it is not going to be patched next week. EA has now said in writing that the smaller Evolutions in EA SPORTS FC 27 are a design decision — and the reasoning tells you exactly which Evos are still worth your slots and which ones are a waste of a week.

Published: 3 October 2026. Current phase: FC 27 Season 1 — Ones to Watch is live from 17 September to 22 October, Destined for Glory runs until 9 October, and the first FUT Champions Finals of the year was tracked by the community for 2–5 October.

Quick answer: Yes, Evolutions are deliberately weaker in FC 27. EA says it retuned them to rebalance squad upgrades across Evos, rewards, SBCs and the Transfer Market. The nerf hits the top end hardest: low-rated entries still gain double digits in overall, while 78–79 OVR cards gain two or three. Evos are now a depth-and-roles tool, not a route to a meta starting XI.

Short version of the rest of this article:

  • Entry-level Evos are still the best free value in the game — one live Evolution takes a 65 OVR right back to 79.
  • Anything that accepts a 78 or 79 OVR card is currently paying out +2 or +3 overall for three challenges and permanent untradeability.
  • The nerf is designed to compound through the season, not fade. End-game items are around 20% less boosted and the PlayStyle+ ceiling has dropped from five to three.
  • Your top-end upgrades are supposed to come from the market this year, and EA's own data says players have the coins for it.

What did EA actually say about the FC 27 Evolutions nerf?

EA addressed it directly in the FUT Developer Launch Update published on 1 October 2026. The FUT team opened the Evolutions section by naming it as the single loudest piece of feedback they are tracking:

"One of the biggest conversations we're following right now is around Evolutions and the broader pace of squad upgrades."

Then the confirmation that the community had been arguing about for a fortnight:

"This year, we've made meaningful changes to the tuning of Evolutions as part of our broader goal of maintaining a balance across the different ways you can upgrade your squads, including Evolutions, game mode rewards, SBCs, the Transfer Market, and more."

That is EA saying the smaller numbers are the product, not an error. The team closed by saying Evolutions "remain an important part of the FUT experience" and that they will "continue to monitor feedback in this area closely throughout the year" — which is an acknowledgement, not a promise of a buff.

None of this was hidden, either. The Launch Update Pitch Notes from 14 September already told players that Evolutions would arrive "just at a lower frequency and released at more intentional moments", and that they would "feature more tailored progression paths, with specific positional and Attribute requirements designed to preserve a player's unique identity and on-pitch strengths as they grow". If you have been bouncing off eligibility screens all month, that sentence is why — we broke the specific traps down in our guide to why your player is not eligible for an Evolution.

How big are FC 27 Evolution upgrades in practice?

Here is the part the Pitch Notes do not spell out: the nerf is not flat. It scales with how good your input card is. These are the live Evolutions on 3 October 2026, with the before-and-after overalls EA shows on each Evo's own example card, as catalogued by fut.gg.

EvolutionEntry requirementExample cardOVR gain
Intro to EvolutionsMax 75 OVR, RBCerezo 65 → 79+14
Trust the KeeperMax 74 OVR, GKBerisha 71 → 79+8
Midfield Glow UpMax 74 OVR, CDMBannan 72 → 79+7
Wing SpecializationMax 79 OVR, RM/RWMüller 77 → 83+6
Frontline ParadoxMax 79 OVR, STLeroux 78 → 81+3
Flank IdentityMax 79 OVR, LM/LWAlvarado 78 → 80+2
Pivot ShiftMax 79 OVR, CDM/CMBurger 78 → 80+2

Read down that right-hand column and the design intent is obvious. FC 27 Evolutions will happily drag a 65 OVR card up fourteen points to make it playable. They will not drag a 78 OVR card anywhere near the meta. Every single Evo in the list converges on roughly the same 79–83 ceiling regardless of where the card started, which means the better your input, the worse your return.

Compare that to where FC 26 ended up. Our own FC 26 Futties Evolution breakdown covered Evos handing out +10 Finishing, +10 Shot Power, +4 Skill Moves, +4 Weak Foot and ten PlayStyles on cards already sitting at 97 OVR. That is the era FC 27 is deliberately not repeating. One caveat worth stating plainly: that was end-of-cycle FC 26, and we are in week two of FC 27 — EA has said impactful Evolutions are still coming, just less often. The honest comparison is not "FC 26 was better", it is "FC 27 front-loads nothing".

Why did EA nerf Evolutions in FC 27?

Because the FUT economy is running hot and Evolutions were the lever EA chose to pull. The same Developer Launch Update gave the number behind the decision:

"Coin balances are more than 50% higher than at the same point last year and we're seeing plenty of Transfer Market activity. We're also seeing a higher share of Starting XI players being acquired directly through the Transfer Market."

That is the whole argument in two sentences. EA increased post-match payouts substantially this year — the Pitch Notes put FC 26 at "roughly 500 to 600 FUT Coins typically earned from a match" and said Rivals and Champions would have "the potential to reward several times more Coins", on top of 15 to 100 Season Points per eligible match up to a 850 per day cap. EA's own Division 1 Upgraded Rewards slide lists 95,000 Coins alongside a stack of 83+ and 84+ player packs. We covered what that actually lands in your club in our end-of-match rewards breakdown and tracked the market effect in FC 27 coin balances are 50% higher.

If every route to a better squad got stronger at once, nothing would feel like a choice. So rewards went up, the market became the primary source of Starting XI players, and Evolutions got pulled back to stop them stacking on top. Whether you like it or not, the trade is coherent.

Are FC 27 Evolutions still worth it?

Depends on the input card, and there is a clean rule you can apply without doing any maths.

The real cost of an Evolution is not coins — it is untradeability plus a locked slot. Entry fees on most live Evos are free or trivial; the Evolution Store has paid options, which we priced out in coins vs FC Points on paid Evolutions. What you actually spend is three to six competitive matches of challenge progress, one of your limited Evo slots for the duration, and the card's resale value. Put a 79 OVR card through an Evo and you own an 81 you can never sell, in a market where EA has just told you most people are buying their Starting XI outright.

So the rule: if an Evolution's ceiling is under +5 OVR and the card is not already in your XI, skip it. The +2 and +3 Evos are only worth doing on cards you were never going to sell anyway — SBC players, objective rewards, untradeable pack pulls that are already stuck in your club.

Where Evos still win outright:

  • Goalkeepers. Trust the Keeper takes a 74-capped GK to 79 with a +15 Diving boost on fut.gg's example card, needs three challenges, and lists a one-day training time. You never sell your keeper, so untradeability costs you nothing.
  • Low-rated entries. Intro to Evolutions turning a 65 into a 79 is the single best free upgrade in the game right now, and Training Camp Evolutions exist specifically to feed them — see our Training Camp Evolutions guide.
  • Roles and chemistry, not overall. Pivot Shift and Flank Identity are poor overall upgrades and genuinely useful position fixes. A +2 that turns an awkward LM into a working LW is worth more than it looks on the card.
  • Pathways with a PlayStyle+ you actually use. With the PlayStyle+ ceiling cut from five to three for the whole game, the ones you do get are proportionally more valuable. Our Pathways explainer covers how the chain preview works.

Where they lose: anything you bought on the market to Evo, anything aimed at replacing an 84+ card, and anything you are doing because the tab exists rather than because the output has a job in your squad.

Short on time? timesaver.gg clears the grind so the upgrade lands while the meta still cares.

Which FC 27 Evolutions are worth a slot right now?

Based on the live list on 3 October 2026, in priority order:

  • Intro to Evolutions — max 75 OVR, RB, centre-backs excluded, max two positions, Pace capped at 80, grants Wingback+. Biggest raw gain available.
  • Trust the Keeper — max 74 OVR, GK, three challenges, one-day training time. Fixes the cheapest position to fix.
  • Midfield Glow Up — max 74 OVR, CDM, excludes CAM/CB/ST, Pace capped at 85, grants Deep Lying Playmaker+ or Box Crasher+.
  • Wing Specialization — max 79 OVR, RM/RW, excludes ST/CDM, three challenges. The only 79-cap Evo currently returning more than +3.
  • Intro to Pathway Evolutions — max 80 OVR, max three PlayStyles+, four challenges. Worth it to learn the chain system before a serious card goes in.

Skip for now unless you are fixing a position: Flank Identity, Pivot Shift and Frontline Paradox at the 78–79 OVR end. We ranked the current crop in detail in the best FC 27 Evolutions for Season 1.

Does an Evolution make a player permanently untradeable?

This is the question dominating r/fut threads this week, and the community answer has changed since launch. Players in those threads report that Evolutions — and specifically the role upgrades — can now be removed from a card, returning it to a tradeable state. Several describe doing exactly that before selling.

Treat that as community-verified rather than EA-documented: there is no Pitch Note spelling out removal mechanics, so confirm on a card you do not care about before you commit a valuable one. We walk through the current behaviour in removing an Evolution to make a card tradeable again. If removal holds up across the season it meaningfully softens the nerf, because the resale cost of a small Evo drops to nearly nothing.

Will the FC 27 Evolutions nerf get worse later in the season?

Structurally, yes — and this is the part almost nobody is reading. From the FUT Deep Dive:

"At launch, Player Items will have similar OVR and PlayStyle levels to FC 26. However, by the end of the season, we are intending for the scope of Attribute and PlayStyle upgrades between base items and final campaign Items to be meaningfully smaller compared to FC 26."

So the gap between a base card and a final-campaign card is being compressed on purpose. EA's own launch slides put numbers on it: end-game items roughly 20% less boosted, a maximum of three PlayStyles+ instead of five, and around five fewer campaign squads across the year. The Pitch Notes framing for the whole system is "slower to strong, faster to elite".

The practical read for your club: do not bank Evo slots waiting for a monster Evolution in November. The ceiling is lower by design all year, so spend slots on depth, roles and keepers now, and plan your actual upgrades around rewards and the market.

One more data point on how EA is thinking about upgrade routes: the same update noted Live Events are now the "third most played FUT experience behind Rivals and Squad Battles", that "more than 350,000 players have already linked their EA Account with authorized community partner sites", and that Streamlined SBCs reached the Companion App on 28 September. Squad-building is being pushed toward SBCs and events, not Evos.

FAQ

Did EA nerf Evolutions in FC 27? Yes. EA confirmed in the FUT Developer Launch Update on 1 October 2026 that it made "meaningful changes to the tuning of Evolutions" to balance squad upgrades across Evos, rewards, SBCs and the Transfer Market. It is deliberate, not a bug.

Are FC 27 Evolutions still worth doing? On low-rated cards, goalkeepers, untradeable players and position fixes, yes. On 78–79 OVR cards you could otherwise sell, usually not — the current 79-cap Evos mostly return +2 or +3 overall.

What is the biggest OVR gain from a live FC 27 Evolution? Intro to Evolutions, which shows a 65 OVR right back finishing at 79 on its example card — a +14 swing, verified on 3 October 2026.

Can you remove an Evolution in FC 27 and sell the player? Players report that Evolutions and role upgrades can be removed to restore tradeability. EA has not published the mechanic, so test it on an expendable card first.

Why do my FC 27 upgrades feel smaller than in FC 26? Because they are, by design and across the whole game. EA cut the PlayStyle+ maximum from five to three, reduced attribute increases between campaigns, and is targeting end-game items that are around 20% less boosted than FC 26's.

Will EA buff Evolutions later in FC 27? Nothing has been promised. EA said it will "continue to monitor feedback in this area closely throughout the year" and has a FUT Q&A planned in its Discord, but the lower ceiling is stated policy for the full cycle.

Should I use coins or Evolutions to upgrade my Starting XI? EA's own data points at the market: coin balances are more than 50% higher than this point last year and a higher share of Starting XI players are being bought directly. Use Evos for depth and roles, coins for the XI.
