FC 27 Speed Bump & Centre Stage Evos: Best Players and the 77-Pace Catch

FC 27 just handed out two free defensive Evolutions in two days, and the marketing line on one of them oversells it. EA SPORTS FC 27's Speed Bump Evolution promises to give "a slower CB a pace upgrade", and Centre Stage rebuilds a CDM or CM into a physical anchor. Both cost 0 coins and 0 FC Points, and both are quick: four matches for Speed Bump, six for Centre Stage. But both stop adding pace at 77, which changes who you should put in them.

FC 27 is in the final week of Season 1 (Season 2 starts Thursday 22 October 2026), with Future Stars Team 2 in packs since Friday. Neither Evolution dies with the season: you can start Speed Bump until 26 October, 18:00 UTC and Centre Stage until 25 October, 18:00 UTC. Below you'll find every requirement, every level, the pace math, the kind of card that gains the most, and which other live Evos you can chain them with.

TLDR: FC 27 Speed Bump and Centre Stage in 30 seconds. Speed Bump (free, CB): max 80 OVR, Pace 75 or lower, must not be CDM. 3 levels, 4 matches and 1 win. Adds up to +10 Acceleration and +10 Sprint Speed, both capped at 77, OVR capped at 83, plus Jockey and Intercept. Centre Stage (free, CDM/CM): max 81 OVR, Pace 85 or lower, must not be CB, ST or CAM. 4 levels, 6 matches, no wins needed. Adds +30 Strength, Jumping and Aggression (cap 85), +2 Weak Foot and Skill Moves, OVR capped at 85, plus Jockey and Incisive Pass. The catch: a CB that starts at 75 pace gets about +2 per pace stat, not +10. Use a CB at 67 pace or lower. Both Evos accept Rivals, Champions, Rush and Live Events matches as well as Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or higher.

What are the FC 27 Speed Bump and Centre Stage Evolutions?

They're the two newest free Evolutions in FC 27 Ultimate Team. Centre Stage landed on Thursday 15 October and Speed Bump on Friday 16 October, the same day Future Stars Team 2 arrived. EA doesn't publish Evolution details on its news pages, so the requirements below come from the community trackers that read them from the game: fut.gg's Speed Bump page and fut.gg's Centre Stage page, checked on 17 October and cross-checked against Destructoid's level table.

The "Must not be" row catches people out every time. It reads every position listed on the card, so a CB that also lists CDM won't appear in the Speed Bump submit list at all, and a CDM with CB as an alternate position is locked out of Centre Stage. FC 27 just hides ineligible cards without telling you why. If your player is missing, our FC 27 "player not eligible" Evolution guide covers every trap.

What does Speed Bump upgrade at each level?

The upgrades come in three levels. Each value is the maximum the Evolution adds, followed by the cap it can't push past.

LevelChallengeUpgrades (+max, cap)
1Play 1 matchOVR +10 (83), Acceleration +10 (77), Composure +14 (81), Jumping +10 (85), Def. Awareness +7 (82), Long Pass +4 (76)
2Play 2 matchesSprint Speed +10 (77), Standing Tackle +12 (82), Reactions +7 (80), Interceptions +7 (82), Strength +7 (86), Jockey PlayStyle
3Play 1 match and win 1 matchShort Pass +11 (80), Sliding Tackle +7 (82), Aggression +5 (84), Ball Control +5 (76), Heading Acc. +5 (80), Intercept PlayStyle

Every challenge accepts Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or higher, or a Rush, Rivals, Champions or Live Events match, as long as your evolving player is in the game. That's four matches if your Level 3 match is also the win. fut.gg rates it "Easy".

The Jockey PlayStyle suits a slow centre-back, because side-on defending is how you handle a quick winger you can't outrun. Don't overrate it, though. According to EA's FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive, FC 27 gave players without Jockey faster jockey sprint acceleration and reduced the exit-jockey boost for both PlayStyle tiers. Intercept was rebalanced the same way, in favour of high-Interceptions players who don't have it. Having either PlayStyle matters less than it did in FC 26, so treat them as a bonus, not the reason to use this Evolution.

What does Centre Stage upgrade at each level?

Centre Stage is the bigger Evolution. It has four levels, six matches and no win requirement.

LevelChallengeUpgrades (+max, cap)
1Play 2 matchesOVR +10 (85), Weak Foot +2 (3), Jumping +30 (85), Short Pass +10 (82), Heading Acc. +10 (81), Sprint Speed +7 (77)
2Play 2 matchesSkill Moves +2 (3), Stamina +30 (84), Vision +10 (83), Long Pass +10 (83), Def. Awareness +10 (80), Jockey PlayStyle
3Play 1 matchStrength +30 (85), Standing Tackle +10 (81), Crossing +10 (82), Curve +10 (82), Incisive Pass PlayStyle
4Play 1 matchAggression +30 (85), Interceptions +10 (82), Sliding Tackle +10 (82), FK Accuracy +10 (82), Acceleration +7 (77)

Those four +30 physical upgrades are what make this Evolution worth it. A technically good but slight central midfielder, the kind who gets bullied in midfield duels, comes out with up to 85 Strength, Jumping and Aggression and 84 Stamina. Weak Foot and Skill Moves only rise to 3 stars, so a card that already has 3 or more gains nothing there.

Why does the 77 cap matter more than the +10?

Because the cap, not the boost, decides your pace. Speed Bump adds up to 10 points to Acceleration and Sprint Speed, but never takes either above 77. Centre Stage adds up to 7 to each, with the same 77 ceiling.

Chart: points added to Acceleration and Sprint Speed by starting value under the 77 cap in FC 27 Speed Bump and Centre Stage

The arithmetic for Speed Bump:

  • A CB starting at 67 Acceleration gets the full +10, finishing at 77.
  • At 70, it gets +7.
  • At 74, it gets +3.
  • At 76, it gets +1. At 77 or more, nothing.

Speed Bump admits CBs with up to 75 Pace, so the cards that pass the entry check most comfortably are the ones it helps least. Players spotted this within hours: the first reply on the r/EASportsFC thread announcing the Evo just said it boosts pace to 77, and another complained that "only +10" was nowhere near enough to make slow players usable. That's fair, and it's in line with EA's stated design. In its FUT Developer Launch Update (1 October 2026), EA wrote:

"This year, we've made meaningful changes to the tuning of Evolutions as part of our broader goal of maintaining a balance across the different ways you can upgrade your squads, including Evolutions, game mode rewards, SBCs, the Transfer Market, and more." (EA SPORTS FC, FUT Developer Launch Update)

So a 77-pace ceiling is on purpose, and we don't expect a buff. Our breakdown of the FC 27 Evolutions nerf covers the rest of EA's reasoning.

For Centre Stage, the cap means any midfielder already at 77+ Acceleration and Sprint Speed gets no pace at all. That's no great loss, because pace isn't why you'd use this Evolution.

How much OVR can each Evolution add?

The OVR line works the same way: up to +10, but never past the cap. Speed Bump stops at 83 and Centre Stage at 85.

Chart: maximum OVR gain by starting OVR for FC 27 Speed Bump (cap 83) and Centre Stage (cap 85)

These are ceilings. Your real OVR gain depends on which attributes your card can still raise before each one hits its cap. An 80 OVR CB can gain no more than +3 from Speed Bump, while a 73 OVR CB can gain up to +10. Centre Stage's higher cap makes it the better OVR Evolution at the top of its entry range: an 81 OVR midfielder can still gain up to +4.

Who are the best players for the FC 27 Speed Bump Evolution?

Pick by profile, not by name. For the biggest gain, the ideal Speed Bump card has:

  • CB as its position and no CDM anywhere on the card. Check the alternate positions.
  • Acceleration and Sprint Speed at 67 or lower, so it gets the full +10 on both.
  • Defending already at 78 or higher. Speed Bump only adds +7 Defensive Awareness and +12 Standing Tackle, so it can't make a poor defender good.
  • Strength and height you already trust. Strength only rises to 86, so a slow, strong CB is the textbook fit.
  • Already in your starting XI, or close to it. A free Evo still takes up a slot.

The trackers' early shortlists include Gerard Martín, Jacquet, Touré, Yoro, Gadou, Colwill, Mosquera, Aguerd, Tomiyasu, Pavard, and the TOTW versions of Elvedi and Mavropanos (Destructoid's list). Run each through rule 2 before you commit. Some of the younger, quicker names start close to 75 pace, and for them Speed Bump is mostly a Jockey and Intercept Evolution with small stat gains. A slower veteran at 64 to 67 pace gets the full Evolution.

Who are the best players for the Centre Stage Evolution?

The best Centre Stage card is a technically strong CM or CDM with weak physicals. Low Strength, Jumping and Aggression are exactly what the +30 upgrades fix. The checklist:

  • CDM or CM, and none of CB, ST or CAM among its positions.
  • Strength and Jumping in the 50s or 60s, so the +30 upgrades land in full and reach 85.
  • Passing already decent. Short Pass and Long Pass only rise to 82 and 83, and Incisive Pass is the PlayStyle you're getting.
  • Pace below 77 if you can. Anything above it gets no pace from this Evo, but that's a minor point.

At the top of the range, retrogems.fr's shortlist names Khéphren Thuram (CM, 81), Eduardo Camavinga (CM, 81) and Pascal Groß's TOTW 2 card (CDM, 81). All three are useful, but at 81 OVR they can gain no more than +4. Retrogems lists Camavinga at 79 pace, so he gets nothing from the pace upgrades. A 72 to 76 OVR passer with poor physicals gains far more from this Evolution and is usually cheaper on the market.

Can you chain Speed Bump or Centre Stage with other FC 27 Evos?

You can, but there aren't many options, and order matters. EA's Evolutions help article has the tool for this: "When you add another Evolution to the preview, available Evolutions are filtered using the Player Item's resulting stats." Use the preview before you submit anything.

What that means with the Evos live on 17 October:

  • Speed Bump CBs have almost nothing to chain into. Side Step excludes CBs, Centre Stage excludes CBs, and Playmaker Reborn excludes CBs. The only general option is the Quick Step Evolution (max 83 OVR, max 2 PlayStyles), and Speed Bump adds two PlayStyles itself. If you have Quick Step, run it before Speed Bump, while the card still has room under its PlayStyle limit.
  • Centre Stage CDMs: run Midfield Glow Up first if your card qualifies (CDM, max 74 OVR) and it's still in your Available list. Centre Stage can take a 74 OVR card well past 74, after which Glow Up won't accept it.
  • Centre Stage CMs: Playmaker Reborn first (CAM or CM, max 74 OVR, must not be CDM, CB or ST), for the same reason.

The general rule: run the Evolution with the lowest OVR limit first. Once an Evolution pushes a card over another one's OVR limit, the only way back is removing upgrades, and EA is clear that "Removing an Evolution is final and can't be undone." Our guide to removing an Evolution and making a player tradeable again explains what you lose.

Are Speed Bump and Centre Stage worth an Evolution slot?

Centre Stage: 8/10. It's free, needs no wins, and gives four +30 physical upgrades and two useful PlayStyles. Put the right midfielder in it and it fixes the exact weakness that loses you midfield duels. The only reason not to use it is a full set of slots.

Speed Bump: 6.5/10 in general, 8/10 for the right card. It's free and takes four matches, but 77 pace won't stop a quick striker on the counter. It's very good for a slow, strong CB you were already starting, because it adds Jockey, Intercept and 10 points of Acceleration and Sprint Speed. If your CB starts at 74 or 75 pace, you're mostly getting the PlayStyles.

A slot is the real cost. Evolution slots come with your edition, and you can't buy more with coins. EA's help page also warns that a player submitted to a standard slot "becomes untradeable while the Evolution is applied". If you're unsure how many slots you have, read how many Evolutions you can run at once in FC 27. Our Week 4 Evolutions ranking compares both against Side Step, Touchline Magic and the rest of the current list.

No time to grind Evolution matches before Season 2? Our FC 27 team can clear your Evolution levels for you, or top up your club so you can buy the right slow, strong CB or physical midfielder to put in them.

When do Speed Bump and Centre Stage expire?

You have to start Centre Stage by Sunday 25 October, 18:00 UTC and Speed Bump by Monday 26 October, 18:00 UTC (fut.gg). FUT Mind lists Speed Bump's completion deadline as 2 November, 18:00 UTC. Both start-by dates fall after the Season 2 reset on 22 October, so the new season doesn't cut them short.

EA's help page explains how the two in-game timers work: "Get Within X Days" is how long you have to activate the slot, "Expires In X Days" is how long you have to finish it, and a slot "might have one, both, or neither." If the expiry runs out halfway through, you keep the levels you've completed. The fastest way to finish is to play your evolving players in the matches you're playing anyway this weekend, whether that's Rivals, Champions or Rush, rather than grinding Squad Battles separately. If you're still deciding what to spend before the reset, our FC 27 Season 2 guide covers the rest of the week.

What hasn't EA said about these Evolutions?

Three things, and we'll update this post if any of them change:

  • EA hasn't published either Evolution on ea.com. Like every weekly Evo, they exist in-game and on the trackers. All the numbers above come from fut.gg (checked 17 October) and match Destructoid's independent table.
  • Exact per-card results. The OVR caps are ceilings. How much your card actually gains depends on its attributes, so check the in-game preview before you submit.
  • Chemistry on special cards. EA's help article says "Some Evolutions may remove the Chemistry bonuses from Special Items." Neither Evo page says whether that applies here, so look at the preview if you're evolving a TOTW or promo card.

FAQ

Is the FC 27 Speed Bump Evolution free? Yes. Speed Bump costs 0 coins and 0 FC Points. You need a CB with 80 OVR or lower, Pace 75 or lower, no more than 7 PlayStyles and no CDM position, then 4 matches including 1 win.

How much pace does Speed Bump give in FC 27? Up to +10 Acceleration and +10 Sprint Speed, but neither can go above 77. A CB starting at 67 or lower gets the full +10. A CB starting at 75 gets about +2 on each.

Do Rivals or Champions games count for Speed Bump and Centre Stage? Yes. Every challenge accepts Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or higher, or a Rush, Rivals, Champions or Live Events match, with the evolving player in the game.

Why can't I put my CB in Speed Bump? Usually because the card also lists CDM, which Speed Bump excludes, or because its Pace is above 75 or its OVR above 80. FC 27 hides ineligible cards without saying why.

Can I use Centre Stage on a CAM? No. Centre Stage needs a CDM or CM, and the card must not list CAM, CB or ST anywhere. A CM with CAM as an alternate position won't qualify.

Do these Evolutions end when Season 2 starts? No. Season 2 starts on 22 October, but you can start Centre Stage until 25 October, 18:00 UTC and Speed Bump until 26 October, 18:00 UTC.
