Every Skirk guide gives you the same three artifact sets and the same Freeze team. Almost none of them do the one piece of arithmetic that decides whether your Skirk works: her Elemental Skill grants 45 Serpent's Subtlety, her Skill state burns 6.667 of it per second, and the state lasts up to 12.5 seconds. Those numbers do not reconcile. Her Skill pays for a little over half of her own damage window, and the rest has to come from somewhere else.
Written 2 October 2026, during Version 7.1 "A Rekviem for the Underworld".
Quick answer
- Best artifact set: 4-piece Marechaussee Hunter for on-field Skirk who never casts her regular Burst, or 4-piece Finale of the Deep Galleries for everything else. KQM measures Galleries at under 2% behind Marechaussee on-field, better in split rotations, and significantly better for quickswap.
- Best weapon: Azurelight, her signature sword, which KQM puts roughly 18 to 22% ahead of her next alternatives. Free options are genuinely close: Calamity of Eshu and Finale of the Deep.
- Main stats: ATK% sands, Cryo DMG or ATK% goblet, CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG circlet. Her ascension stat is CRIT DMG, reaching 38.4% at maximum.
- Never build Energy Recharge. Her Burst does not use Elemental Energy at all, so Energy Recharge is a dead substat on her.
- The number that matters: her Skill funds only 54% of her own damage window. Void Rifts from her first ascension passive pay for the other 46%.
- Her best teammate is Escoffier by a wide margin, and that is a kit fact rather than a preference. Skirk is not on a banner today; her Phase 2 rerun line-up is confirmed, the date is not.
What makes Skirk's build different from every other Cryo DPS?
Skirk is a 5-star Cryo sword user, constellation Crystallina, titled "Void Star," released in Version 5.7 on 18 June 2025. At Level 90 she has 12,417 HP, 358.77 ATK and 806.21 DEF, and her ascension bonus is CRIT DMG, topping out at 38.4%.
Two things separate her from every other Cryo carry.
First, her Elemental Burst does not use Elemental Energy. HoYoverse's own talent text opens with it: her Burst "is not reliant on Elemental Energy but instead on Serpent's Subtlety." That deletes an entire substat from her build and creates a weapon interaction covered below.
Second, her kit is element-locked to Hydro and Cryo. Her fourth ascension passive only triggers off Hydro or Cryo teammates, and her Utility Passive only activates in a party made entirely of those two elements. KQM's quick guide is blunt about the cost: she is "extremely inflexible; she is essentially locked into either using only Hydro and Cryo teammates or deactivating half of her kit."
How Serpent's Subtlety actually works
Her Elemental Skill, Havoc: Warp, has two modes, and both grant 45 Serpent's Subtlety with no damage on the cast itself.
- Tap puts her into Seven-Phase Flash, her damage state. Normal, Charged and Plunging Attacks convert to Cryo damage that, in HoYoverse's wording, "cannot be overridden by other Elemental infusions." Her attack area and interruption resistance go up, she can sprint across water, and her Burst is replaced by a free version called Havoc: Extinction.
- Hold instead gives her a fast movement state. It does not start the damage window, but it does let her hoover up Void Rifts, and crucially her Subtlety is not cleared when the Hold ends.
Seven-Phase Flash drains 6.667 Serpent's Subtlety per second and caps at 12.5 seconds. Run the division: 45 divided by 6.667 is 6.75 seconds. Filling the full 12.5 seconds needs about 83 Subtlety, so you are roughly 38 points short on every single rotation.
That gap is the whole reason her first ascension passive exists.
Void Rifts are not a bonus, they are the fuel
Reason Beyond Reason, her first ascension passive, spawns a Void Rift near an enemy whenever nearby party members trigger Frozen, Superconduct, Cryo Swirl or Cryo Crystallize. It fires once every 2.5 seconds, and a maximum of three of her own Rifts can sit on the field at once.
She absorbs them three ways: a Charged Attack hit while in Seven-Phase Flash, casting Havoc: Extinction while in the state, or Holding her Skill to dash through them. Each Rift absorbed grants 8 Serpent's Subtlety.
Now the arithmetic closes: the full 12.5-second state needs about five Rifts per rotation. KQM states the consequence directly — "her A1 Passive is vital to ensure she can remain in her Tap Skill state for the full duration." If your team cannot reliably produce Frozen or Crystallize, you are not running a worse Skirk; you are running a Skirk whose damage window is roughly half as long as the one every guide's damage number assumes. This is also her hardest counter, since enemies with a permanent Pyro aura never Freeze and the Rifts never spawn.
Her Burst uses the same currency. Havoc: Ruin needs at least 50 Serpent's Subtlety, expends all of it, and scales with every point above 50 up to 12 extra points. Since the Skill grants 45, you cannot cast her Burst off a bare Skill — one Rift takes you to 53, two to 61, and a third to 69, past the 62-point counting ceiling.
Which artifact set is best for Skirk?
Two sets are genuinely close, and the right pick depends on whether she casts her regular Burst.
| Set | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 4-piece Marechaussee Hunter | On-field Skirk who never uses her regular Burst | Best-in-slot only with full stacks; its CRIT Rate overcaps with a CRIT Rate weapon |
| 4-piece Finale of the Deep Galleries | Split rotations and quickswap | Under 2% behind Marechaussee on-field in KQM's sims, and ahead of it if using a CRIT Rate weapon |
| 4-piece Blizzard Strayer | Guaranteed-Freeze content | Dead against unfreezable enemies |
| 4-piece Gladiator's Finale or mixed 2-piece | Placeholder while farming | Use whichever pieces have better substats |
Main stats are ATK% sands, Cryo DMG or ATK% goblet, CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG circlet. The goblet choice is buff-dependent: percentage damage bonuses such as Furina's Burst and 4-piece Scroll push toward an ATK% goblet, while 4-piece Tenacity and Shenhe's buffs push toward a damage bonus goblet. With 4-piece Marechaussee or Blizzard Strayer, an ATK% circlet becomes viable too.
The counterintuitive part is that having fewer useful stats makes her harder to gear, not easier. With no Energy Recharge requirement and CRIT Rate frequently overcapped, KQM notes "she can be a headache to build since she is left with only three usable substats — one of which is Flat ATK."
What is Skirk's best weapon?
Azurelight, her signature sword. It carries 674 base ATK at Level 90 and 22.1% CRIT Rate.
Its passive is where her no-Energy design pays off. Whitehill's Bestowal grants 24% ATK for 12 seconds after an Elemental Skill, and then, specifically when the holder has 0 Energy, a further 24% ATK and 40% CRIT DMG. Most characters satisfy that clause only in the window between spending a Burst and refilling. Skirk runs on Serpent's Subtlety rather than Energy, so the 0-Energy condition is always satisfied for her, and the conditional half stays live for the whole 12-second window — which her 8-second Skill cooldown keeps refreshed. HoYoverse has published no note on this specific interaction, so treat it as the theorycrafting consensus reading rather than confirmed text. KQM counts it as "an additional 48% ATK and 40% CRIT DMG from its passive, which Skirk has no issue maintaining," and measures the sword at roughly 18 to 22% ahead of her nearest alternatives.
If you do not have it, the free-to-play options are unusually competitive:
- Calamity of Eshu, a 4-star from the Version 5.2 event, which KQM rates on par with her 5-star alternatives when its passive is active — that needs a shielder such as Citlali or Dahlia. It falls off significantly in quickswap play.
- Finale of the Deep, a craftable 4-star, is quickswap Skirk's best 4-star by a large margin, and her best on-field 4-star in any team without a shielder. It needs a healer to fully activate, which Escoffier already provides.
- 5-star alternatives Primordial Jade Cutter, Haran Geppaku Futsu and Mistsplitter Reforged all land close together. Be careful pairing the high CRIT Rate of Jade Cutter or Haran with 4-piece Marechaussee, since you will overcap.
Why is Escoffier non-negotiable for Skirk?
Because Skirk's own fourth ascension passive makes her so, and the numbers are steep.
Return to Oblivion grants Skirk a stack of "Death's Crossing" for 20 seconds whenever a nearby Hydro party member's Hydro attack lands, or a nearby Cryo party member other than Skirk hits with Cryo. It caps at three stacks, and each character can supply at most one. Those stacks raise her Seven-Phase Flash Normal Attack damage to 110%, 120% and 170% of its original value, and her Havoc: Ruin damage to 105%, 115% and 160%.
Read that progression again. Stacks one and two are worth 10 and 20 percentage points. The third stack is worth 50 more, which is more than the first two combined. Her fourth constellation adds ATK on the same curve, 10%, 20% and 40%.
So Skirk does not want a Hydro or Cryo partner, she wants three distinct ones — which is exactly the party her Utility Passive, Mutual Weapons Mentorship, also demands: when every party member is Hydro or Cryo and at least one of each is present, the whole team gets +1 Elemental Skill level.
Escoffier sits at the centre of that party, and the two kits lock together. Her resistance shred scales on a ladder with the number of Hydro or Cryo party members — 5%, 10%, 15% and then 55% at four — so the full-Hydro/Cryo party that Skirk's own passives already demand is exactly the condition that unlocks Escoffier's top tier. In that team she supplies a 55% Cryo and Hydro resistance shred, healing that keeps Furina's Fanfare stacking, and strong personal damage that mostly comes from her Skill, so Skirk's Utility Passive buffs her too. KQM calls her "easily Skirk's best teammate," and lists "significantly lower damage output without Escoffier" as Skirk's first drawback.
Players in r/Genshin_Impact build threads reach the same conclusion unprompted. Asked whether to pull Vodyanitsa or wait for Escoffier, one commenter put the gap at "around ~50% more dmg than her other alternative and even more with sig," while another drew the line by roster: "If you have furina, then escoffier. Otherwise vodyanitsa." Treat those as community estimates rather than tested figures, but the direction matches the passive text exactly.
Teams that actually switch her kit on
The shape is Skirk, Escoffier, a Hydro enabler, and a fourth Hydro or Cryo — three distinct Death's Crossing suppliers, every slot Hydro or Cryo.
- Furina supplies a large damage bonus, can hold 4-piece Tenacity to buff Skirk further, and is Skill-based so she benefits from the Utility Passive. She needs a healer, which Escoffier already is.
- Yelan gives off-field damage and a ramping damage bonus, enables Hydro Resonance, and does not require a healer — the better pick for Escoffier-less players.
- Shenhe is the strongest pure Cryo buffer, with Icy Quill, a Cryo damage bonus and resistance shred.
- Citlali provides the full 4-piece Scroll bonus and a Hydro resistance shred that helps off-field Furina or Yelan.
- Mika, Charlotte, Rosaria and Kaeya cover budget rosters. KQM rates Mika "an especially strong pick thanks to Skirk's short hitlag, making Attack SPD a solid buff for her," and makes the same case for Dahlia, whose Attack SPD buff "lets her squeeze in several extra Normal Attacks."
For the full breakdown of the resistance shred and her four-member condition, see our Escoffier build guide. If you are weighing the Phase 1 banner instead, we compared them in Vesna or Vodyanitsa and detailed her kit in the Vodyanitsa build guide.
What materials does Skirk need?
A full Level 1 to 90 ascension costs 420,000 Mora, plus:
| Material | Total | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Ensnaring Gaze | 46 | Lv. 30+ Tenebrous Papilla, a normal boss |
| Shivada Jade gems | 1 Sliver, 9 Fragment, 9 Chunk, 6 Gemstone | Cryo bosses and crafting |
| Skysplit Gembloom | 168 | Natlan local specialty, found in Atocpan |
| Meshing Gear | 18 | Clockwork Meka enemies in Fontaine |
| Mechanical Spur Gear | 30 | Clockwork Meka enemies in Fontaine |
| Artificed Dynamic Gear | 36 | Lv. 60+ Clockwork Meka enemies |
The 168 Skysplit Gemblooms are the real schedule problem. Local specialties respawn on a multi-day timer, and only Motolinia sells them, five at a time for 1,000 Mora each on a three-day restock. Start collecting before a rerun, not during one.
Taking one talent from Level 1 to 10 costs 1,652,500 Mora, 3 Teachings, 21 Guide and 38 Philosophies of Contention, the Clockwork Meka gear line, 6 Ascended Sample: Knight from the Lv. 70+ The Game Before the Gate weekly boss, and 1 Crown of Insight. Contention books come from the Blazing Ruins domain on Monday, Thursday and Sunday — and you are competing with Iansan, Mavuika, Mualani and the Pyro Traveler for them.
Talent priority is Skill, then Burst. Her Skill carries her on-field damage; the Burst leads for quickswap. KQM notes "there is no need to level Skirk's Normal Attack," because her Skill-state attacks scale off Skill levels instead.
When is Skirk's next banner?
She is not on a banner on 2 October 2026. Version 7.1 Phase 1 is running Vesna and Vodyanitsa.
Here is the part most pages blur. HoYoverse's Version 7.1 preview, published 12 September 2026, does confirm the line-up: "In the first phase of Version 7.1 Event Wishes will feature Vesna and Vodyanitsa, with Skirk and Escoffier returning in the second phase." So Skirk in Phase 2 is a first-party fact.
The date is not. We re-queried the live in-game announcement feed on the morning of 2 October 2026: across all 37 live notices, the strings "Skirk," "Escoffier," "Void Star" and "Phase 2" appear zero times. HoYoverse has published no Phase 2 calendar in-game. What the feed does pin down is that the three Phase 1 wish notices — 21876, 21877 and 21878 — all expire on 13 October 2026, which bounds when Phase 2 can begin, and that Version 7.1 itself runs to early November.
The widely repeated "13 October to 3 November" window comes from community trackers, not from HoYoverse. Treat 13 October as expected, not promised. Our Version 7.1 banners and October 2026 banner schedule pages track every change as the notices land.
This will be her third appearance: her Version 5.7 debut ran 18 June to 8 July 2025, and a Void Star's Advent rerun ran 17 March to 7 April 2026. Her last banner closed roughly six months ago.
Are her constellations worth it?
- C1 Far to Fall — each absorbed Void Rift summons a crystal blade for 500% of ATK as Cryo damage, counted as Charged Attack damage. Solid for both playstyles.
- C2 Into the Abyss — raises her Skill's Subtlety from 45 to 55, lifts the Burst damage cap from 12 to 22 extra points, and grants 70% ATK for 12.5 seconds after Havoc: Extinction. The big one, especially for quickswap.
- C3 Serendipitous Sin — Burst to Level 15.
- C4 Fractured Flow — Death's Crossing stacks also give 10%, 20% and 40% ATK.
- C5 End of Wishes — Skill to Level 15.
- C6 To the Source — absorbed Rifts grant Havoc: Sever stacks for coordinated attacks and damage reduction, up to 3 stacks for 15 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best artifact set for Skirk? 4-piece Marechaussee Hunter for an on-field Skirk who never casts her regular Burst; 4-piece Finale of the Deep Galleries as the better all-rounder, which KQM's sims put under 2% behind on-field and clearly ahead for quickswap.
What is Skirk's best weapon? Azurelight, her signature sword, which KQM measures at roughly 18 to 22% ahead of her alternatives. Its passive adds ATK and CRIT DMG within 12s of an Elemental Skill while the holder has 0 Energy — a condition Skirk always satisfies, since her Burst runs on Serpent's Subtlety rather than Energy. Calamity of Eshu and Finale of the Deep are strong free alternatives.
Should Skirk build Energy Recharge? No. Her Elemental Burst runs on Serpent's Subtlety rather than Elemental Energy, so Energy Recharge does nothing for her. It is the only Genshin build where you can discard the stat entirely.
How long does Skirk's Seven-Phase Flash last? Up to 12.5 seconds, but her Skill only grants 45 Serpent's Subtlety and the state drains 6.667 per second. That funds 6.75 seconds. Absorbing Void Rifts at 8 Subtlety each covers the rest, so roughly five Rifts are needed for the full window.
Can Skirk use her Burst straight after her Skill? No. Havoc: Ruin needs at least 50 Serpent's Subtlety and her Skill grants only 45, so you must absorb at least one Void Rift first. Two Rifts put her at 61 and a third at 69, past the 62-point counting ceiling. While she is in Seven-Phase Flash her Burst is replaced by Havoc: Extinction, which costs no Subtlety.
Is Escoffier required for Skirk? Not required, but no other teammate comes close. In a full Hydro/Cryo party — which Skirk wants anyway — she shreds 55% Cryo and Hydro resistance (the ladder is 5/10/15/55% at one through four Hydro or Cryo members), heals, and supplies a Death's Crossing stack. Yelan or Shenhe are the best substitutes.
Which Skirk talent should I level first? Her Elemental Skill, because her Seven-Phase Flash attacks scale off Skill level. Level her Burst second, or first if you play her as a quickswap nuker. Her Normal Attack talent can be skipped entirely.
Does Skirk work without Freeze? Poorly. Her Void Rifts only spawn from Frozen, Superconduct, Cryo Swirl or Cryo Crystallize, so enemies with a permanent Pyro aura shut the passive off and cut her damage window roughly in half. Plan a second team for Pyro-aura content.
When is Skirk's 7.1 rerun? HoYoverse's 12 September 2026 Version 7.1 preview confirms Skirk and Escoffier return in Phase 2, but no Phase 2 date appears in any of the 37 live in-game notices as of 2 October 2026. Phase 1's wish notices expire 13 October 2026, so Phase 2 starts after that. The commonly cited 13 October to 3 November window is a community tracker estimate.
