There are two Cayo Perico cooldowns in GTA Online, and almost everyone confuses them. One controls when you can start the heist again — that's the short one, measured in minutes. The other controls which primary target you get — and since Title Update 1.73 that one is a full week long. Confuse them and you'll do exactly what half of r/gtaonline does every Thursday: burn your one good roll of the week on a run you started a day too early.

This guide separates them cleanly: the exact timers, what the weekly reset actually resets, the 48-minute Hard Mode window most players miss, and what genuinely does and doesn't reset the clock.

Quick answer: how long is the Cayo Perico cooldown?

TL;DR — Two separate timers. Replay cooldown: after a solo finale you wait three in-game days = 144 real minutes; after a finale with a crew it's one in-game day = 48 real minutes. Target cooldown: since Title Update 1.73 (July 14, 2026) the high-value primary targets refresh on the weekly reset — Thursday, roughly 07:00 UTC — not on a 72-hour timer. Your first scope-out after the reset has a 0% chance of Sinsimito Tequila (40% Ruby Necklace / 40% Bearer Bonds / 20% Pink Diamond); every additional scope-out that week is 80% Tequila. Hard Mode is armed by paying the GTA$100,000 setup fee within 48 real minutes of Pavel contacting you. If you'd rather not build your week around a reset timer, a GTA 5 money top-up skips the whole loop.

Here's the roadmap:

  • The replay timer — 144 minutes solo, 48 with a crew
  • The weekly target reset — what TU 1.73 actually changed
  • The odds — why repeat runs are 80% Tequila
  • The Hard Mode window — 48 minutes, easy to miss
  • What does and doesn't reset the timer — cancelling, session-hopping, Kosatka swaps
  • How to plan a week around it — the one-roll-per-week routine

How long before you can start Cayo Perico again?

This is the timer people mean when they say "cooldown," and it's short.

  • Solo finale: three in-game days — 144 real minutes (2 hours 24 minutes) before Pavel will let you start planning again.
  • Finale with a crew: one in-game day — 48 real minutes.

Those two figures date back to The Criminal Enterprises update, which set the solo wait at three in-game days and the group wait at one, and neither has been shortened since. Both figures still hold after Title Update 1.73, and are the values GTA BOOM tracks against in-game checks.

The important nuance: the replay timer runs from the finale, not from the setup. Fail the finale or get killed on the island and the timer doesn't start — you can walk straight back in. Complete it, and the clock begins.

What did Title Update 1.73 change about the cooldown?

This is the part that broke everyone's mental model. Before July 14, 2026, high-value primary targets were gated behind a 72-hour real-time cooldown. After TU 1.73, they're gated behind the weekly reset instead.

Rockstar's own patch notes for Title Update 1.73 state it in one line:

"Primary and Secondary Target appearance rates for repeated completions of The Cayo Perico Heist have been updated to now refresh in the same weekly cadence as the above."

Rockstar Games, GTAV Title Update 1.73 notes (July 14, 2026). The next bullet adds that "further adjustments have also been made to The Cayo Perico Heist Primary and Secondary Target values."

"The same weekly cadence as the above" refers to the bullet list directly above it in the notes — the activities that pay a reduced amount if the host completes the same activity again in the current weekly period: the classic heists — the five Original Heists, all three Doomsday Acts, the Diamond Casino Heist Finale, the Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid, the Data Leaks, Oscar Guzman Flies Again and KnoWay Out. Cayo's good targets now sit in that same bucket: one fresh roll per week, then diminishing returns.

In practice that means the old advice — "wait 72 hours between runs for a better target" — is now wrong. Waiting 72 hours inside the same week gets you nothing. The only thing that resets your odds is Thursday.

Players worked this out the hard way. On r/gtaonline this week, one player who'd waited three days and still drew Tequila was corrected by another: it's not a 72-hour timer, it's a week — you were a day too soon. A third summarised the new rule as Cayo now resetting weekly alongside the first-time payouts for Kortz Center and KnoWay Out.

When exactly does the weekly reset happen?

GTA Online's weekly reset lands every Thursday. Per the GTA Wiki, the game's weekly content — including weekly challenges — rolls over at 07:00 UTC on Thursday. That's the moment your Cayo target odds go back to their good state, along with the new week's bonuses and discounts.

Convert it once and write it down:

RegionWeekly reset time (Thursday)
UTC07:00
UK (BST)08:00
Central Europe (CEST)09:00
US Eastern (EDT)03:00
US Pacific (PDT)00:00

Rockstar doesn't publish a to-the-minute guarantee and the rollover can drift by a few minutes on a heavy update week, so if you're chasing the first roll, give it a little buffer rather than launching at 06:59.

Why do I keep getting the Sinsimito Tequila?

Because the odds are brutally front-loaded to that first weekly roll. The current post-TU-1.73 probabilities:

Primary TargetFirst scope-out after weekly resetEvery additional scope-out that week
Sinsimito Tequila0%80%
Ruby Necklace40%10%
Bearer Bonds40%8%
Pink Diamond20%2%

Read that bottom row again: your Pink Diamond chance drops from 20% to 2% the moment you've used your first scope-out of the week. That's a 10x collapse, and it's the single most important number in modern Cayo planning.

The Panther Statue isn't in this table at all — it's event-only, enabled by Rockstar for selected events rather than sitting in the standard rotation. (We covered its last appearance in the Panther Statue return guide.)

The practical read: one properly-planned run per week is worth more than five grinds. For the exact dollar value of each of those targets after the nerf, see our Cayo Perico loot values breakdown and the primary targets ranked guide.

What is the 48-minute Hard Mode window?

This one is a timer inside a timer, and it costs players 10% of their payout every week.

Once the replay cooldown expires, Pavel contacts you — and from that message you have 48 real minutes to pay the GTA$100,000 setup fee from the Kosatka. Pay inside that window and the heist arms in Hard Mode, which raises the primary target's value by 10% (a Pink Diamond goes from GTA$910,000 to GTA$1,001,000) and doubles the Elite Challenge bonus from GTA$50,000 to GTA$100,000.

Miss the window and that attempt runs on Normal — the fee you pay is what arms Hard Mode, so there's no way to add it once the heist is already set up.

So the correct sequence on a Thursday is: be online before the reset, wait for Pavel, pay the GTA$100,000 immediately, then scope out. Paying the setup fee is also widely believed to be the moment the primary target is locked in — as one veteran put it on r/gtaonline, paying the 100K has always been the point where the target is defined. Rockstar has never documented this, so treat it as strong community consensus rather than a confirmed mechanic.

Does cancelling the heist reset the cooldown?

Short answer: no, and don't count on it.

Here's what's confirmed and what isn't:

  • Confirmed: the replay cooldown (144 / 48 minutes) starts on finale completion. Cancelling a heist you've already set up does not roll it back.
  • Widely reported by veteran players (not documented by Rockstar): the primary target is locked in at the point you pay the GTA$100,000 setup fee, not at the scope-out cutscene.
  • Confirmed: the weekly target odds refresh only at the Thursday reset — no in-game action moves that date.
  • Community-reported, not confirmed by Rockstar: whether cancelling your first setup of the week burns your 0%-Tequila guarantee. Players on r/gtaonline are split — one reported cancelling and successfully re-rolling into a Ruby Necklace the next day, another suspects the guarantee is spent on the first paid setup regardless. Treat it as untested and don't gamble your weekly roll on it.

The old session-hop and disconnect-at-the-finale tricks that speedrunners documented for the original heists are also not a reliable answer here — they target the replay timer, not the weekly odds, and Rockstar has patched variations of them repeatedly. Nothing shortens the week.

Also worth knowing: selling or re-buying the Kosatka does not reset anything. You'd be spending GTA$2.2 million to change nothing about the timer.

How should you plan a week around the cooldown?

Because the good roll is once-weekly, Cayo has stopped being a grind and become an appointment. The efficient routine:

  • Thursday, at reset: log in, wait for Pavel, pay the GTA$100,000 within 48 minutes to arm Hard Mode, scope out. You're rolling into the 40/40/20 table with zero Tequila risk.
  • Run it properly, once. Fill the loot bag, chase the Elite Challenge (finale under 15 minutes, every bag full, no failed fingerprint hack) for the GTA$100,000 Hard Mode bonus.
  • Then leave the island alone. A second run that week is an 80% Tequila coin-flip on a 144-minute cooldown — bad money-per-hour.
  • Spend the rest of the week on the weekly-boosted content. TU 1.73's first-completion boosts refresh on the same Thursday cadence, so the classic heists, Kortz Center and your passive businesses are where the volume lives now.

That's the honest shape of GTA Online money in 2026: one high-value roll a week, then breadth. If what you actually want is the Kosatka, the mansion and the car collection without eight weeks of Thursday alarms:

FAQ

How long is the Cayo Perico cooldown in 2026? Three in-game days — 144 real minutes — after a solo finale, and one in-game day (48 real minutes) after a finale completed with a crew. Separately, the high-value primary targets refresh only on the weekly reset each Thursday.

Is the Cayo Perico cooldown still 72 hours? No. Title Update 1.73 (July 14, 2026) moved primary and secondary target appearance rates onto the weekly cadence, replacing the old 72-hour high-value-target cooldown. Waiting 72 hours inside the same week no longer improves your odds.

What time does the Cayo Perico target reset? With GTA Online's weekly reset — Thursday at roughly 07:00 UTC (03:00 ET / 00:00 PT), per the GTA Wiki's weekly-challenge rollover time. Allow a few minutes of drift on heavy update weeks.

How do I guarantee a Pink Diamond or Ruby Necklace? You can't guarantee a specific target, but your first scope-out after the Thursday reset has a 0% chance of Sinsimito Tequila — 40% Ruby Necklace, 40% Bearer Bonds, 20% Pink Diamond. Every additional scope-out that week drops to 80% Tequila and 2% Pink Diamond.

Does cancelling the heist reset the Cayo Perico cooldown? No. The replay cooldown starts when you complete the finale, and the weekly target odds only refresh on Thursday. Whether cancelling your first paid setup of the week burns the no-Tequila guarantee is still community-debated and untested — don't risk your weekly roll on it.

How do I activate Hard Mode on Cayo Perico? Pay the GTA$100,000 setup fee from the Kosatka within 48 real minutes of Pavel contacting you after the cooldown expires. Hard Mode adds 10% to the primary target's value and raises the Elite Challenge bonus from GTA$50,000 to GTA$100,000.

Does buying a new Kosatka reset the cooldown? No. The cooldown is tied to your character's heist completion and the weekly reset, not to the submarine. Selling and re-buying the Kosatka costs millions and changes nothing about the timer.
