Quick answer: You don't "join" a permanent (non-shutdown) Once Human server from a menu the way you pick a seasonal one. A permanent server is created automatically when a seasonal server finishes its settlement phase — your character (level, resources, cosmetics, achievements) is merged into the matching permanent server during a short maintenance, and you keep playing the same scenario with no wipe. If you want to reach a specific permanent server to play with friends, you either sign up for that scenario's permanent server from Scenario Selection → More Servers when one is open, or use a friend's Special Invitation Code when it is full. After the September 16, 2026 update, Starry Studio began merging low-population permanent servers together, so there are fewer, fuller permanent servers per region now. This guide is current for version 3.0.7 (September 28, 2026 PT) on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and S, PC and mobile.
Key takeaways
- Permanent servers are auto-created, not browsed. When a Manibus, Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash or The Way of Winter server reaches its settlement phase, it converts into a permanent (no-wipe) server and your data moves with it automatically.
- "After Novice you should move to a permanent server" is half-true. Finishing Manibus Novice does not automatically drop you onto a permanent server — you still choose at settlement whether to stay (and let it convert) or start a fresh scenario.
- You keep almost everything. Level, scenario resources, cosmetics and achievements transfer to the permanent server; the hard account progression (blueprints, Mods, story, Starchrom) was already permanent.
- "All permanent servers are full" is a real 2026 problem — the fix is a Special Invitation Code from a friend already on that server, not a third-party site.
- Log in at least once every 30 days or your character can be moved when low-population permanent servers are merged.
Two threads on r/OnceHumanOfficial this morning say the same thing a different way: "after Novice you're meant to join a permanent server" and "all permanent servers are full, can someone invite me?" Both come from the exact same gap — new console and mobile players who finished their first scenario, read a 2024 guide, and don't understand that a permanent server is something your existing server becomes, not a lobby you queue for. Here is how it actually works in 2026.
What is a permanent (non-shutdown) server in Once Human?
A permanent scenario server is a seasonal server that has reached, and then frozen on, its final phase. In the studio's own words from the official dev blog:
"In Once Human, servers whose scenarios have reached the settlement phase are automatically converted into non-shutdown servers, also known as permanent scenario servers. Unlike regular scenarios, permanent scenario servers only have one phase—the settlement phase—which does not end. Permanent scenario servers stay open indefinitely."
— Once Human Development Team, "What Are Permanent Scenario Servers?" (official dev blog)
In plain terms: a normal scenario (say, Manibus) runs through a set of numbered phases over roughly 63–68 days, ending in a 4-week settlement phase. On a seasonal server, that's when the world winds down and you decide what's next. On a server that converts to permanent, that settlement phase simply never ends — the world stays open, no wipe, forever (as long as you keep logging in).
This is the single most important thing stale guides get wrong. If you read anywhere that "Once Human servers wipe every six weeks," that advice is from 2024, before permanent servers existed. The correct 2026 answer to "do Once Human servers wipe?" is: only seasonal ones do, and only if you choose to stay on the seasonal track — permanent servers never wipe. We cover that distinction in depth in our seasonal vs permanent servers explainer.
Permanent servers currently exist for four scenarios: Manibus, Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash and The Way of Winter. (Endless Dream also has permanent servers in some regions following the 2026 merges.)
How do you actually get onto a permanent server?
There are two paths, and new players conflate them.
Path 1 — the automatic one (this is what "after Novice" means)
You do not manually "join" the permanent version of your own scenario. It happens to your server. From the official rules:
"After the settlement phase (about 3–4 weeks) in Manibus, Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash, and The Way of Winter servers, player character data—including level, scenario resources, cosmetics, and achievements—will be automatically merged into the corresponding permanent scenario server. This will take approximately 2 hours, during which players cannot log in."
So the real "after Manibus Novice" flow is:
- Your Novice server works through its phases and reaches the settlement phase (the last ~3–4 weeks).
- At settlement, you choose: stay on this scenario (and let it convert to permanent), or sign up for a brand-new scenario instead.
- If you stay, during a maintenance window of about 2 hours your character is merged into the matching permanent server. When it comes back up, you're playing the same world with no wipe.
That's why "after Novice you're meant to join a permanent server" is only half-right. Nothing forces you onto a permanent server — it's the default outcome if you simply keep playing and don't sign up for a new scenario at settlement. Novice is just the lowest-difficulty Manibus ruleset; finishing it doesn't teleport you anywhere.
Path 2 — reaching a specific permanent server (to play with friends)
If your goal is a particular permanent server — usually because a friend is already there — you sign up for it directly:
- Open Scenario Selection (the scenario bar / world menu).
- Choose the scenario your friend is on (e.g. Manibus).
- Go to More Servers and look for that scenario's Permanent server in your region (names look like Manibus (Permanent), W_Winter (Permanent), E_Dream (Permanent), Deviation (Permanent) after the 2026 merges).
- Sign up while a slot is open.
Important: signing up for a different server means starting a new character there — a character is permanently bound to the server it was created on, and there is no character-transfer feature. Picking the right server for your group before you build up a character matters. Our full server switching guide walks through the menus on PS5 and Xbox.
"All the permanent servers are full" — the 2026 fix
This is the complaint in today's Reddit threads, and it's real. After the 2026 merges consolidated many low-population permanent servers into fewer, fuller ones, a popular scenario's permanent server in a busy region can sit at or near capacity (official servers are capped at roughly 6,000–8,000 players). When a server is genuinely full, normal sign-up is blocked.
The intended fix is a Special Invitation Code:
- Your friend who is already on that full permanent server opens their profile.
- They select View Special Invitation Code and send you the code.
- You use it to join that specific full server.
Three things to know so you don't waste time:
- The code is server- and region-specific — it only lets you into that server, in that region.
- It only works while the server is genuinely full. Once the join window closes or the scenario hits its hard cap, the code stops working.
- You and your friend must be in the same region. Region is chosen at character creation and can't be changed later, so pick the nearest region for latency and to match your friends.
If you can't get a code, your realistic options are: wait for a slot to open, pick the same scenario's permanent server in a less-crowded region (new character), or join a different (untagged, cross-platform) seasonal server of the same scenario with your group and ride it to settlement together. We cover the full flow — adding friends, joining the same world, and fixing the "we're on different servers" mismatch — in our how to play with friends guide. Never buy a "server slot," account, or invite from a third-party marketplace — it's an account-ban risk and against the game's rules.
What the September 16, 2026 permanent-server merge changed
If your character suddenly looked like it was on a renamed server after mid-September, this is why. During the September 16, 2026 PT maintenance, Starry Studio began a rolling merge of permanent servers, explained in the official notice:
"To truly bring Metas in the same region and same scenario together in one world, we will gradually merge all permanent servers of the same scenario."
— Once Human "Permanent Scenario Server Merge Notice" (official dev blog)
The merge detail that matters to players:
- The Way of Winter and Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve permanent servers began merging first, during the September 16 maintenance.
- Manibus permanent merges started in South America, Japan, Korea, and HK/MO/TW first; other regions' Manibus and Endless Dream merges are rolling out gradually in later versions, announced in advance.
- After a merge, each scenario has one brand-new permanent server per region (with enough worlds inside it to hold everyone), named like Manibus (Permanent).
- Your data transfers without loss — the official rules state your "Character Level, Supplies, Tech Level, and other data will be transferred to the new permanent server without loss," and hive (team) relationships move with you.
- You can't go back. "Once a permanent scenario server merge is initiated, the original servers being merged in cannot be returned to."
- Task progress is reset to the merged server's current scenario challenge tasks and rewards, so new and veteran players share one consistent task state.
The practical upside for a new player reading "all servers are full": merges exist specifically to fix the scattered, low-population problem — so a full popular server now usually means there's an active world worth being on, and an invite code is the way in.
What carries over vs what resets (so you don't panic at settlement)
Moving onto a permanent server is not a wipe, but a few things still reset the way they do at any scenario transition. Short version:
- Carries over (account-wide, always): weapon and armor blueprints and their star ratings, blueprint fragments, Mods, learned furniture formulas, Main/Side Story progress, Battle Pass progress, and currencies like Starchrom, Crystgin, Mitsuko's Marks and Silver Keys.
- Transfers with the permanent conversion: your current level, scenario resources, cosmetics and achievements (per the official auto-merge rule above).
- Goes to Eternaland (your private hub) if you start a new scenario instead of converting: crafted items, materials, captured Deviations, regular resources, and Energy Links, which convert into Astral Sand.
- Resets only when you choose a fresh scenario: your in-world level back to 1, Memetics, map discovery, and your territory placement.
If you stay and let your server convert to permanent, you're not "starting over" at all — you keep your level and your base. The reset path only applies if you deliberately sign up for a new scenario. For the complete breakdown, see what carries over and what resets.
The 30-day rule and world merges inside a permanent server
Two housekeeping rules keep tripping people up:
- Log in at least once every 30 days. Characters on permanent servers that go inactive can be moved when low-population permanent servers are merged. If you're taking a break, drop in once a month.
- Worlds inside your permanent server also merge. A "world" is a sub-shard of your server. The studio merges worlds based on active population, and "after Worlds are merged, your territory may be recalled to prevent location conflicts." A recalled territory isn't lost — you re-place it — but don't be alarmed if your base needs re-setting after a world merge.
Permanent servers keep receiving cosmetics, weapon balance changes, ranching/farming tweaks, new events and bug fixes. They do not receive new regions, new Memetics, new crisis events, season-goal changes, map changes or new seasonal modes — those only land on fresh scenario servers. So if a future update adds a whole new region and you want it, that's your cue to sign up for a new scenario rather than stay permanent.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to join a permanent server after Manibus Novice? No. Finishing Novice doesn't force a move. At your server's settlement phase you choose to stay (your server converts to a permanent, no-wipe version with your character intact) or sign up for a brand-new scenario (which resets your in-world level and Memetics but keeps your account progression). "After Novice you must join a permanent server" is a misreading — staying is simply the default if you don't pick a new scenario.
How do I join a permanent server in Once Human? Usually you don't pick one from a list — your seasonal server auto-converts into the matching permanent server at its settlement phase, carrying your level, resources, cosmetics and achievements with it over a ~2-hour maintenance. To reach a specific permanent server (to play with a friend), use Scenario Selection → More Servers, choose that scenario's Permanent server in your region while a slot is open, or use a friend's Special Invitation Code if it's full.
All the permanent servers are full — what do I do? Get a Special Invitation Code from a friend already on that server (their profile → View Special Invitation Code). It's server- and region-specific and only works while the server is genuinely full. If you can't get one, wait for a slot, choose the same scenario's permanent server in a quieter region, or group up on a seasonal server of the same scenario and convert together. Don't buy codes or slots from third-party sites — it risks your account.
Will I lose my character or base when my server becomes permanent? No. The conversion is not a wipe — your level, scenario resources, cosmetics and achievements transfer automatically. The September 2026 permanent-server merges also move your level, supplies, Tech Level and hive relationships "without loss." Your territory can be recalled (not deleted) when worlds inside a permanent server merge; you simply re-place it.
Can I move my existing character to a different permanent server? No. There is no character-transfer feature — a character is bound to the server it was created on. Signing up for a different server means creating a new character there. Choose your scenario and region carefully before you invest time, because region can't be changed after character creation either.
Do permanent servers get new content? Partly. They receive cosmetics, weapon balance, ranching/farming changes, events and bug fixes, but not new regions, new Memetics, new crisis events, season-goal changes, map changes or new seasonal game modes. For that content you sign up for a new scenario server.
How often do I need to log in to keep my permanent-server character? At least once every 30 days. Inactive characters on low-population permanent servers can be moved when those servers are merged, so a quick monthly login protects your spot and your base.
