Path of Exile's 3.29 Curse of the Allflame league ships 40 challenges, and clearing them is the only way to earn this league's exclusive cosmetics — an ocean-themed weapon effect, pet, back attachment and portal effect you can never buy or unlock again once 3.30 launches. This guide covers exactly how the challenge system works in 3.29, which reward you unlock at each tier, where the difficulty wall really is, and the fastest realistic path to 36 and then 40/40 before the league ends. Applies to 3.29 Curse of the Allflame (launched 24 July 2026, latest patch 3.29.3b, verified 26 September 2026).
Quick answer: 3.29 Curse of the Allflame has 40 standard-league challenges (Ruthless has a separate 8). You earn cosmetic microtransactions at 12, 24, 32 and 36 challenges — the Oceanic Weapon Effect (12), Fangtooth Moray Pet (24), Captain's Wheel Back Attachment (32) and Oceanic Portal Effect (36) — and completing challenges also grants pieces of the Allflame Challenger Trophy hideout decoration. All rewards are cosmetic only (no character power) and can also be used in Path of Exile 2. 36 challenges unlocks all four wearable cosmetics; 37–40 adds only the completion flex and the top of the trophy. The first ~30 are routine map-and-mechanic play; the final handful (deep endgame, pinnacle/Uber bosses, rare drops) are the real time sink — that's where a boss-carry saves the league. Progress resets when 3.30 launches (GGG-undated, expected around ExileCon on 7–8 November 2026), so the window to finish is roughly now through early-to-mid November.
Below: what challenges are and how they're tracked, the full 3.29 reward table, the 3.29-specific league challenges, where the difficulty spikes, and the fastest route to 36/40.

Path of Exile - Power Leveling
Get leveled to 100 without the grind
What are Path of Exile challenges, and how do they work in 3.29?
Challenges are temporary, league-specific objectives — a checklist that ships with every new league and disappears when the next one launches. The official PoE Wiki puts it plainly: "Challenges are side objectives available in challenge leagues. Unlike achievements, they are tied to a specific league and cannot progress once that league ends." So the 40 challenges in Curse of the Allflame are only completable inside 3.29; once 3.30 goes live, unfinished progress is gone and a fresh set replaces it.
A few mechanics matter for planning your run:
- They reward cosmetics, not power. Completing challenge tiers unlocks microtransaction cosmetics and hideout decorations. Nothing about your character's strength changes — challenges are a flex and a collection goal, not a gear treadmill.
- Progress is per-account, within the league. Your challenge completion is shared across all the characters you play in Curse of the Allflame — you don't have to do everything on one character. The count follows your account, not a single build.
- Standard and Ruthless are separate. The 3.29.0 patch notes state it verbatim: "The new Curse of the Allflame challenge league includes a set of 40 new challenges, and 8 new challenges in Ruthless Curse of the Allflame." If you play standard trade or standard SSF, your target is 40. Ruthless is its own 8-challenge track.
- Your count shows next to your name. As you complete challenges, a number appears beside your username in chat — the in-game bragging-rights display that vanishes the moment the next league begins.
You track everything in the in-game Challenges panel, opened from the social/menu screen, which lists all 40 with a tick as you clear each one and shows how far you are from the next reward tier.
PoE 3.29 challenge rewards: what you unlock at each tier
This is the part everyone actually plans around — the cosmetics. GGG's official Curse of the Allflame challenge-rewards announcement lists four standard-league reward tiers. All four are ocean/voyage-themed to match the league:
| Challenges completed | Reward (exact name) |
|---|---|
| 12 | Oceanic Weapon Effect |
| 24 | Fangtooth Moray Pet |
| 32 | Captain's Wheel Back Attachment |
| 36 | Oceanic Portal Effect |
On top of the four cosmetics, there's a hideout decoration. GGG's rewards announcement states it directly: "Completing challenges also grants you pieces of the Allflame Challenger Trophy Hideout Decoration!" The trophy pieces accumulate as you clear challenges, giving you a permanent hideout showpiece of how far you pushed this league.
Two things worth knowing before you commit the hours:
- 36 is the real finish line for cosmetics. All four wearable/effect rewards — weapon effect, pet, back attachment, portal — are unlocked at 36. The jump from 36 to 40/40 tops off the Allflame Challenger Trophy and earns the completion flex, but no additional weapon effect or wing. If you only want the cosmetics, 36 is the efficient target; 40/40 is for completionists and the leaderboard.
- Rewards carry into PoE 2. GGG confirmed these cosmetics "can also be used in Path of Exile 2" — a real bonus with PoE 2's full 1.0 launch dated 11 December 2026, right after this league cycle. Cosmetics you earn now aren't stranded in PoE 1.
Ruthless players earn the same four cosmetics at accelerated tiers — 2, 4, 6 and 8 challenges — because there are only 8 Ruthless challenges total.
Which challenges are unique to Curse of the Allflame?
A good chunk of the 40 are tied directly to the 3.29 league mechanic — The Sovereign (the ship hub), Charts, Voyages, Allflame Lanterns, Mercenaries and Allflame Crafting — so they progress naturally while you farm the league. Open the in-game Challenges panel and you'll see the league cluster asks you to do exactly the things you're already doing to make currency:
- Get started with the mechanic — visit The Sovereign, place an Allflame Lantern, and chart your first area.
- Run Voyages — complete Voyages and defeat the rare monsters that spawn inside them.
- Cover every Chart type — complete the different Chart variants the league offers.
- Craft with the league — use Allflame Crafting (the Dead Man's Sulphur craft) on your gear.
- Push Voyage variety — complete Voyages across the different border modifiers.
Because the league's own money loop is Charts and Voyages, the mechanic challenges mostly tick over while you're farming currency anyway. If you've been running the league content for divines, you've likely half-finished this cluster without trying. (New to it? Our Curse of the Allflame currency guide walks through Charts and Voyages from scratch.) Check the exact wording of each challenge in-game — GGG doesn't publish the individual challenge names in the patch notes, so the panel is the source of truth for what each one wants.
The rest of the 40 are the standard evergreen categories every league recycles — clear specific map bosses, complete X of a league mechanic (Breach, Legion, Abyss, Expedition), hit map-tier milestones, and defeat the pinnacle bosses. Those are where the real work sits.
Where the 3.29 challenge difficulty actually spikes
The 40 challenges are not evenly hard. The distribution is the same every league, and understanding it is the whole plan:
- Challenges 1–~24 are routine. Level to maps, run the league mechanic, complete the common map encounters, hit early Atlas milestones. A competent character clears most of these just by playing the campaign and early red maps. This is where the first two cosmetic tiers (12, 24) fall, and they arrive fast.
- Challenges ~25–~32 need intent. Now you're farming specific things — nine Chart types, particular Scarab or Atlas setups, higher map tiers, certain unique drops. Nothing is skill-gated yet, but you have to go out of your way. The Captain's Wheel back attachment at 32 is roughly a "cleared endgame and did the league thoroughly" badge.
- Challenges ~33–40 are the wall. This is the deep-endgame tail: pinnacle and Uber bosses (Maven, the Searing Exarch, Eater of Worlds, Uber versions), rare or expensive drops, and objectives that demand either a very strong build or a lot of currency. The gap between 36 and 40/40 is almost entirely this cluster — a single Uber-boss challenge can eat more time than the first 20 challenges combined.
That last band is why 40/40 is a status symbol and why the community treats 36 as the practical cosmetic finish. It's also the exact point where players who don't have a pinnacle-boss-capable build stall out. If a couple of Uber-kill challenges are all that stand between you and 36 or 40/40, a boss-carry service clears them in minutes instead of the days of gearing and practice a first-time Uber kill demands — and it's the single highest-leverage way to finish before the league ends.

Path of Exile - League Challenges
Get your league challenges cleared
The fastest realistic route to 36 and 40/40 in 3.29
Here's the order that wastes the least time:
- Play the campaign and hit maps normally. Don't chase challenges early — most of the first 20+ complete themselves as you level, unlock the Atlas passive tree, and start the league mechanic.
- Do the league-mechanic cluster while you farm. Because Charts, Voyages, Allflame Lanterns and Mercenary steps overlap with the most profitable farming this league, run the league content for currency and let the charting, Voyage and Allflame-crafting challenges tick off as a byproduct.
- Sweep the "complete X of a mechanic" challenges deliberately. Around 24–32, open your Challenges panel and knock out the specific-mechanic and map-tier objectives on purpose. This is the phase that needs a checklist, not luck.
- Fund the endgame, then close the boss tail. The 33–40 band is gated by a pinnacle-capable build and currency. Either grind the build and practice the Uber fights, or — if the league clock is short — buy the Voidstones and pinnacle-boss progression you're missing and clear the final challenges with a carry. Getting the currency together is faster if you farm the league's best lanes first.
The whole plan hinges on the league clock. 3.29 launched 24 July 2026; GGG has not dated 3.30 yet, but ExileCon is 7–8 November 2026 and trackers project the next league for late November — so the honest window to reach 36 or 40/40 is now through early-to-mid November. Front-load the boss tail; don't leave your Uber challenges for the final week when the population (and your carry options) thin out.
FAQ
How many challenges are in PoE 3.29 Curse of the Allflame? There are 40 standard-league challenges in 3.29, confirmed in GGG's official 3.29.0 patch notes. Ruthless Curse of the Allflame has a separate set of 8. Standard trade and standard SSF both target 40; the two tracks are counted independently.
What do you get for completing challenges in 3.29? Cosmetic microtransactions only — no character power. You unlock the Oceanic Weapon Effect at 12, the Fangtooth Moray Pet at 24, the Captain's Wheel Back Attachment at 32, and the Oceanic Portal Effect at 36, plus pieces of the Allflame Challenger Trophy hideout decoration as you complete challenges. GGG confirmed the rewards can also be used in Path of Exile 2.
Is it worth going to 40/40, or is 36 enough? For the cosmetics, 36 is enough — all four wearable/effect rewards unlock at 36. Pushing to 40/40 only adds the top hideout-decoration tiers and the completion flex, and the 37–40 challenges are the hardest in the league (deep endgame and Uber bosses). Aim for 36 if you want the collectibles; go 40/40 only if you're a completionist.
Which challenges are the hardest in 3.29? The final band, roughly challenges 33–40 — the ones that require pinnacle and Uber bosses (Maven, Searing Exarch, Eater of Worlds and their Uber versions), rare drops, or heavy currency investment. A single Uber-kill challenge can take longer than the first 20 combined, which is why so many players stall between 36 and 40/40.
Do challenges reset between leagues? Yes. Challenges are tied to a specific league and cannot progress once that league ends. When 3.30 launches (GGG-undated, expected around ExileCon on 7–8 November 2026), your Curse of the Allflame progress is locked and a new challenge set replaces it — so anything you want from this league has to be finished inside 3.29.
Can I buy a challenge completion or boss carry? The hard tail is exactly what carries exist for. If your build can't kill the Uber pinnacle bosses that gate challenges 33–40, a PoE boss-carry and services package clears those objectives directly, and picking up the currency you need is faster with instant Divine Orbs than grinding it from zero before the league ends.
Finish 3.29 before it's gone
The 40 Curse of the Allflame challenges are a real deadline, not an evergreen goal — every cosmetic resets when 3.30 arrives. The first ~30 complete themselves through normal farming; the last handful are a pinnacle-boss wall that stops most players at 36. If the league clock is tighter than your build, don't let a couple of Uber challenges cost you the whole reward set.
