How to Beat the Uber Elder in PoE 3.29: The Dual Fight & Every Phase

The Uber Elder is Path of Exile's original "final exam" — the fight that made players learn to dodge, cap their resistances, and respect a one-shot. You don't fight one pinnacle boss here; you fight two at the same time, the Shaper and the Elder, in a corrupted version of the Shaper's arena. Clear it and you can farm the most sought-after jewel in the game, the 3-mod Watcher's Eye. This guide covers how to unlock the Uber Elder in league 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame," every phase of the dual fight, the one attack that deletes most builds, and the naming confusion that trips up half the people searching for it.

Quick answer: how do you beat the Uber Elder in PoE?

Assemble the Maddening Object — four map fragments (Fragment of Knowledge, Shape, Terror, and Emptiness) dropped by the regular Shaper and Elder — and open it in your Map Device to enter The Shaper's Realm. Inside, you fight the Shaper and the Elder simultaneously across seven phases (four boss phases plus three intermissions). The Elder is immune to damage while the Shaper is above 75% life, so you always break the Shaper down first. Survive the Shaper's teleport slam (a near-guaranteed one-shot for most builds), his triple-element beam and cold-orb volleys, and the Elder's Ice Spears, tentacle slams and ground degens. The headline reward is a chance at a 3-mod Watcher's Eye, the best version of that jewel in the game.

The fight and its access are unchanged in 3.29 — everything below applies to the current league and has for several leagues.

How do you unlock the Uber Elder fight?

You don't buy the Uber Elder or find it as a random map encounter. You build the key out of boss drops. The key is the Maddening Object, and it is made of four fragments:

  • Fragment of Knowledge and Fragment of Shape — dropped by the Shaper.
  • Fragment of Terror and Fragment of Emptiness — dropped by the Elder.

As Maxroll puts it: "Defeating regular Shaper or Elder is guaranteed to drop a Map Fragment required for the Uber Elder Encounter." So the path is: progress your Atlas, fight the regular Shaper and the regular Elder, collect all four fragments, then place the completed Maddening Object in your Map Device. That opens portals straight to The Shaper's Realm — the dual-boss arena.

One important modern simplification: you no longer have to chase the Elder across the Atlas or juggle the old influence spreading before you can fight the Uber version. Once you have the four fragments, you open the fight directly. If you need help getting the regular Shaper and Elder down in the first place, our Shaper fight guide walks through his solo fight phase by phase.

Uber Elder vs. "Uber Uber Elder": clearing up the naming

This is the single most confusing thing about searching for this fight, so get it straight before you spend an exalt on fragments:

  • The Elder (normal) is the version you meet in Eldritch maps while progressing your Atlas. Solo fight, no Shaper.
  • The Uber Elder is the endgame dual fight — Shaper and Elder together — opened with the Maddening Object (the four fragments above). This is what almost everyone means by "Uber Elder."
  • "Uber Uber Elder" is a separate, harder encounter. It is a tougher, higher area-level instance of the Shaper's Realm opened with four Decaying Fragments, not the Maddening Object. It is not a synonym for Uber Elder — it is the next difficulty tier up.

If a guide or a trade listing says "Uber Uber Elder," it is talking about the Decaying-Fragment version, which is deadlier and drops at a higher item level. Everything in this guide is about the standard Uber Elder, but the mechanics carry straight over to the harder version.

Why do you fight the Shaper and the Elder at the same time?

Because that is the entire point of the encounter. Maxroll describes it plainly: "The Uber Elder is a dual boss encounter where you have to fight both the Elder and the Shaper at the same time."

The twist that defines the fight is the damage gate: "Note that you always have to fight The Shaper before you can Attack The Elder." While the Shaper is above 75% life, the Elder has a silver glow and is immune to damage. So your job is to bring the Shaper down first while dodging the Elder's attacks, then split your damage once the Elder becomes vulnerable. You never get to ignore one of them — you are always eating two bosses' worth of attacks in a shared arena.

The encounter runs for seven phases: four boss phases and three intermission phases where adds and ground effects pressure you between rounds.

What are the Uber Elder's attacks and phases?

Here is the threat list, by source. Learn the one-shot first; everything else is survivable with capped resistances and movement.

The Shaper's attacks

  • Teleport slam (THE one-shot). Maxroll's warning is blunt: "The Shaper disappears into the void, then teleports to your location and slams the ground." And: "Most builds get one-shot by this ability." When the Shaper vanishes, start moving — the slam lands where you are standing.
  • Elemental beam. "The Shaper unleashes a beam of elemental energy, dealing damage over time as Fire, Cold & Lightning." Three-element DoT, so it checks all three of your resistances at once.
  • Cold orb volley. "The Shaper casts a volley of three orbs, dealing massive amounts of Cold Damage." Sidestep the orbs; do not stand in their path.
  • Volatile Anomalies. These create a Vortex that deals heavy Cold Damage over Time — leave the puddle, don't facetank it.

The Elder's attacks

  • Ice Spears. "The Elder has a set of 3 different Ice Spear abilities. Each of them do heavy amounts of Cold Damage." Notice the theme — this fight is overwhelmingly Cold-heavy.
  • Tentacle Slam. "Outrun the Tentacle Slam ability with a Quicksilver Flask." A movement check; keep a Quicksilver up.
  • Siphon. "Immediately move out of the Elder's Siphon area." Drains you if you linger.
  • Ring of Death. "Make sure to stand within the inner circle of the Ring of Death ability." The safe spot is the inside, not the outside — the opposite of your instinct.
  • Ground degens. The Elder's tentacles and Madness Propagators leave eldritch-decay puddles that deal damage over time. The arena floor is never fully safe; keep moving.

What gear and resistances do you need for the Uber Elder?

There is no secret stat check — this is a standard pinnacle fight — but the damage profile is lopsided, so build for it:

  • Cap all elemental resistances at 75%. The Shaper's beam alone deals Fire, Cold and Lightning, so a single uncapped resistance is an opening.
  • Prioritise Cold mitigation. Ice Spears, the cold-orb volley, the Vortex and much of the Elder's kit are Cold — over-capping Cold resistance (to stay at 75% even when a map or the fight reduces it) and leaning on a Cold-focused flask pays off here more than in most fights.
  • Keep a Quicksilver Flask up for the tentacle slam and for repositioning out of the teleport slam.
  • Have enough effective health and recovery to survive a mistimed dodge — this is a movement fight, and one overlapped beam-plus-degen window is what actually kills people, not raw boss DPS.

Maxroll notes the damage is "mitigated by your elemental resistances and other sources of damage mitigation," which is the whole gearing thesis: resistances and movement, not a gimmick. If your character is still under-geared after the campaign, our endgame gearing guide covers the defensive layers to hit before attempting pinnacle bosses.

What does the Uber Elder drop?

The reason you farm this fight:

  • A 3-mod Watcher's Eye — the signature chase drop. Maxroll: "The Uber Elder can drop one of the most desirable Items in the Game: a 3-Mod Watcher's Eye." The regular Elder can roll up to two mods on a Watcher's Eye; the three-mod version comes from the Uber Elder. This is not guaranteed per kill — it is the lottery ticket you run the fight for.
  • Shaper- and Elder-influenced uniques — a drop pool that includes items like the Mark of the Shaper, Mark of the Elder, Voidfletcher, Disintegrator and Indigon (standard), with harder-tier uniques such as Voidforge and The Eternity Shroud tied to the deadlier version. These are pool drops, not guaranteed.
  • Watcher's Eye and influence items aside, the first-clear context also feeds Atlas progression (see the Voidstone note below).

The Decayed Voidstone question (the misconception everyone repeats)

A lot of guides — and even the in-game quest text — make it sound like the Decayed Voidstone is an Uber-Elder-exclusive reward. That is wrong. A GGG staff reply on the official forums settles it: "The Decayed Voidstone is now obtained from killing both the Shaper and the Elder. It can also still be obtained from defeating Uber Elder."

In plain terms: you get the Decayed Voidstone guaranteed from killing the normal Shaper and Elder — you do not need to beat the Uber Elder for it. The Uber Elder can also drop it, but it is not the gatekeeper. If your goal is purely the Voidstone for your Atlas, kill the regular bosses; fight the Uber Elder for the Watcher's Eye. Our Voidstones guide maps out exactly which bosses hand over each of the four stones.

Did 3.29 change the Uber Elder?

No. The official 3.29.0 "Curse of the Allflame" patch notes contain no change to the Uber Elder fight, its mechanics, or its access fragments. The only tangentially related line is an Atlas-connectivity tweak — the Decayed Voidstone socket now connects to additional Guardian maps — which affects how you route your Atlas tree, not the boss. So every mechanic in this guide applies exactly as written in the current league. For the broader list of what did change this league, see the KB-backed breakdown in our Uber boss farming guide.

Should you pay for an Uber Elder carry?

If you want the Watcher's Eye without the gear grind — or you keep eating the teleport slam — a carry gets you the kill and the loot instantly. Pinnacle-boss carries and currency are what we do:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock the Uber Elder in PoE? Kill the regular Shaper and the regular Elder to collect all four Maddening Object fragments — Fragment of Knowledge and Shape from the Shaper, Fragment of Terror and Emptiness from the Elder — then place the completed Maddening Object in your Map Device to open portals to the Shaper's Realm.

What is the difference between the Uber Elder and the "Uber Uber Elder"? They are two different encounters. The Uber Elder is opened with the Maddening Object (four fragments from the normal Shaper and Elder). The "Uber Uber Elder" is a separate, harder, higher-area-level instance of the Shaper's Realm opened with four Decaying Fragments.

Do you fight the Shaper and the Elder at the same time? Yes. The Uber Elder is a dual-boss fight. The Elder is immune to damage while the Shaper is above 75% life, so you break the Shaper down first, then split damage between the two.

What is the Uber Elder's one-shot attack? The Shaper's teleport slam. He disappears into the void, teleports to your position and slams the ground; most builds get one-shot by it. Start moving the instant he vanishes.

Does the Uber Elder drop the Decayed Voidstone? It can, but it is not the only source and not the gatekeeper. Per GGG, the Decayed Voidstone is obtained from killing both the normal Shaper and the Elder, and can also drop from the Uber Elder. For the Voidstone alone you only need the regular bosses.

What resistances do you need for the Uber Elder? Cap all three elemental resistances at 75% and prioritise Cold mitigation — Ice Spears, the cold-orb volley and the Vortex make this a Cold-heavy fight. Keep a Quicksilver Flask up for the tentacle slam and the teleport slam.

Did league 3.29 change the Uber Elder? No. The 3.29.0 "Curse of the Allflame" patch notes list no change to the Uber Elder fight or its access. The only related note is an Atlas-connectivity tweak to the Decayed Voidstone socket.
