PoE2 Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well Guide: How to Beat the Abyssal Lich & Farm Offensive Desecrated Mods (0.5.4)

Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well is the boss you actually want to see at the bottom of an Abyssal Depths in Path of Exile 2 (0.5.4 Return of the Ancients). Kill it and you get a guaranteed rare Stygian Vise belt, a coin-flip at a Darkness Enthroned, a shot at the Ulaman's Gaze Abyssal Eye — and, more importantly, it is the gatekeeper of the offensive Desecrated modifier pool: the crit and added-elemental mods you slam onto weapons and jewellery with an Omen of the Sovereign. This is the fight that turns a good weapon into a god-tier one.

The problem: Ulaman is a hard, timer-gated fight with a Stygian Spire mechanic that punishes low-DPS builds, and most players never see it because they don't juice Abyss correctly. This guide covers exactly what Ulaman is, how to spawn and reach it, every attack and phase in the fight, its full loot table, and how to convert an Ulaman kill into real currency.

Quick answer: how to beat and farm Ulaman in PoE2

  • Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well is one of three Abyssal Liches (alongside Amanamu and Kurgal). It is the offensive Desecration faction — its Desecrated mods are crit chance and added elemental damage, best on weapons and jewellery.
  • Where: Ulaman is the Lichborn boss at the end of an Abyssal Depths — the underground dungeon that an Abyss crack sometimes opens into instead of a plain Trove. The Depths appear best in high-tier maps; level 79+ maps reliably end in an Abyssal boss.
  • The fight: mostly physical damage. It has a Stygian Spire phase at 75%, 50% and 25% health — the boss retreats to a sub-zone and you must destroy the Spire within 90 seconds or it escapes (the timer carries over between phases). Bring DPS, not just tank.
  • Loot: a guaranteed rare Stygian Vise, a ~50% chance at a Darkness Enthroned Stygian Vise, a shot at Ulaman's Gaze (Abyssal Eye socketable), plus Preserved/Ancient bones for offensive Desecration.
  • To craft Ulaman mods: use a Preserved-tier or higher bone with an Omen of the Sovereign active at the Well of Souls — the three revealed Desecrated mods will all be from Ulaman's offensive pool. Gnawed bones (item level 64 cap) do not work.

What is Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well in PoE2?

Ulaman is one of the three Abyssal factions introduced with 0.5 Return of the Ancients. Each faction biases what the Abyss drops and — the part that matters for crafting — which Desecrated modifiers you can pool onto your gear:

Abyssal SovereignThemeDesecrated biasTargeting omen
Ulaman, Sovereign of the WellOffensiveWeapon / jewellery crit & added elementalOmen of the Sovereign
Amanamu, Liege of the LightlessDefensiveShields / body armourOmen of the Liege
Kurgal, BlackbloodedAilmentsPoison / bleed / igniteOmen of the Blackblooded

Because Ulaman owns the offensive pool, it is the most farmed of the three by DPS-focused builds. Desecrated modifiers are a new, powerful mod class tied to Abyss — many of them "cannot normally roll," so they are the only way to push a weapon or a pair of rings past the normal crafting ceiling.

Ulaman appears in two places: as the Lichborn boss at the end of an Abyssal Depths, and as one of the three petrified Liches you must defeat during the Vessel of Kulemak pinnacle gauntlet. This guide focuses on the Abyssal Depths encounter — the repeatable one you farm for currency and crafting mats.

How do you spawn and reach Ulaman?

You don't fight Ulaman on demand — you farm the Abyss until a crack opens into the Depths and rolls the Sovereign as its boss. The chain:

  • Run maps with Abyss. Slot Abyss Precursor Tablets in your Towers and take Abyss nodes on the Atlas tree so a fissure ("Abyss crack") spawns in the map.
  • Clear the crack. The fissure crawls across the map, sealing behind you as you kill the packs it summons.
  • Chase the Depths, not the Trove. The final fissure usually spawns an Abyssal Trove (a loot chest). Sometimes it instead opens into the Abyssal Depths — a short, linear underground city where every rare carries an Abyssal Modifier and the final rare wears the Lichborn tag. That is your boss.
  • Push map tier. In level 79+ maps the layout reliably ends in an Abyssal boss rather than a plain trove, which is what you want if you're hunting Ulaman specifically.

Juice the odds with the Atlas tree. Stack Abyss spawn chance, more monsters/fissures per Abyss, extra Abyssal-modifier count, and the Lichborn nodes. GGG deliberately made this survivable for average builds — the 0.5.1 patch note states: "Elite Abyss Monsters have had their damage, loot, and experience lowered, while also much more significantly reducing the amount of life that they had." (via Maxroll). Translation: you no longer need a top-1% build to clear the Depths.

The Ulaman boss fight: attacks and phases

Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well — the Abyssal Lich boss in the Abyssal Depths (PoE2)

Ulaman's damage is almost entirely physical, so physical mitigation is the single most valuable defensive layer for this fight — armour, endurance-charge-style flat reduction, and physical-taken-as reductions all shine here. Elemental resistances matter far less than in most pinnacle fights.

Ulaman's attacks

AttackWhat it doesHow to handle it
Cremation Sword WaveWinds up, then launches a wide slashing projectile across a lineSidestep perpendicular — the tell is the wind-up animation
Teleport StrikeTeleports to your position and slashes three timesRoll through Ulaman on the teleport, don't run in a straight line
Add SpawnTurns dark and invulnerable, summons a wave of monstersDon't waste DPS while it's invulnerable — clear adds instead
Spirit BurstFollows every Add Spawn; the adds fire fan-pattern spirit projectiles using charges from fallen minionsKill adds fast so they can't stack Spirit Charges

The key discipline point: when Ulaman goes dark and invulnerable, stop attacking the boss and pivot to the adds. Ignoring them lets the Spirit Burst fan-pattern shred you.

The Stygian Spire phase mechanic

This is where low-DPS builds fail Ulaman. At 75%, 50% and 25% health, Ulaman retreats into a sub-zone containing a Stygian Spire. You must destroy the Spire within 90 seconds or the boss escapes and you lose the kill. Critically, the timer carries over between the three phases — if you're slow on the first Spire, you have even less slack on the next.

Practically, this means Ulaman is a DPS check disguised as a mechanics fight. If you can't break each Spire comfortably inside the window, you either need more damage or you should buy the kill and skip the wall (more on that below).

What does Ulaman drop? (Loot table)

Ulaman is one of the better-rewarding Abyssal Liches because it feeds both the belt chase and the offensive crafting economy:

DropChanceWhy it matters
Stygian Vise (rare)GuaranteedBelt with a built-in Abyssal Socket for an Abyss Jewel
Darkness Enthroned (Stygian Vise)~50%Unique belt: massively increases the effect of its socketed Abyss jewels — a chase belt
Ulaman's GazeChanceAbyssal Eye socketable — a chase item that comes from the Depths and almost nowhere else
Preserved / Ancient bonesCommon from DepthsThe Desecration currency you need for offensive Ulaman mods
Abyss Jewels, Heart of the WellChanceHeart of the Well = Diamond jewel with 4 random Desecrated mods

None of this drops raw Divine Orbs in bulk — Abyss farming, Ulaman included, prints value (chase uniques, socketables, bones, jewels) that you convert to Divine on the Currency Exchange. For context on why that conversion matters right now, a Divine Orb trades for roughly 700 Exalted in 0.5.4 softcore — but that number floats hard through a league, so always verify the live rate on poe.ninja or poe2scout before you sell. See our PoE2 Divine Orb Price Guide for the current economy read.

How to craft with Ulaman's offensive Desecrated mods

Revealing three Desecrated modifier options at the Well of Souls in PoE2

Killing Ulaman is only half the value — the other half is using its faction pool to craft. The Desecration flow:

  • Get a Preserved-tier (or Ancient) Abyssal bone matching your item slot. Bones come in three tiers: Gnawed (capped at item level 64 — early/mid gear only), Preserved (the endgame workhorse), and Ancient (rolls only the highest-tier Desecrated mods). Because Ulaman's offensive mods roll only on level 65+ gear, Gnawed bones are unusable here — you need Preserved or higher.
  • Keep an Omen of the Sovereign in your inventory. This is the omen that locks Ulaman's pool.
  • Apply the bone at the Well of Souls. It reveals three Desecrated modifier options — with the Omen of the Sovereign active, all three will be from Ulaman's offensive pool (crit chance, added elemental damage). Pick one; it becomes permanent.

Brick warning: on a full six-affix rare, a bone removes a random existing affix first before adding the Desecrated mod. Craft on items with an open affix slot when you can, or accept the gamble. For the full bone-by-slot breakdown and the deeper Desecration mechanics, read our PoE2 Desecrated Currency Guide.

Is farming Ulaman worth it in 0.5.4?

Yes, if your build can clear the Stygian Spire DPS check — Ulaman is the highest-value of the three Sovereigns for any crit/elemental attack build because it directly upgrades your weapon and jewellery. The Darkness Enthroned and Ulaman's Gaze chases add real spike value on top of the steady bone income.

It's a poor farm if you can't beat the Spire timer. Repeatedly reaching Ulaman and then watching it escape at 50% is pure wasted map time. If that's you, the efficient move is to skip the wall: buy the currency or a carry, slam your Ulaman mods, and keep mapping. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well in PoE2? Ulaman is one of the three Abyssal Liches (with Amanamu and Kurgal) added in 0.5 Return of the Ancients. It's the offensive Desecration faction — its Desecrated modifiers are crit chance and added elemental damage, and you fight it as the Lichborn boss at the end of an Abyssal Depths.

How do I spawn Ulaman? You can't summon it directly. Run Abyss in your maps (Abyss tablets + Atlas nodes), clear the crack, and hope the final fissure opens into an Abyssal Depths with Ulaman as its boss. Level 79+ maps reliably end the Depths in an Abyssal boss rather than a plain Trove, so push map tier if you're hunting it.

What damage does Ulaman deal? Almost all of Ulaman's attacks are physical, so physical mitigation (armour, physical-damage-reduction, physical-taken-as) is the most valuable defensive layer. Elemental resistance matters much less here than in other pinnacle fights.

What is the Stygian Spire phase? At 75%, 50% and 25% health, Ulaman retreats to a sub-zone with a Stygian Spire you must destroy within 90 seconds or the boss escapes. The timer carries over between phases, which makes the fight a hidden DPS check — low-damage builds often fail it.

How do I craft with Ulaman's Desecrated mods? Use a Preserved-tier or higher Abyssal bone with an Omen of the Sovereign active at the Well of Souls. The three revealed Desecrated mods will all come from Ulaman's offensive pool. Gnawed bones cap at item level 64 and don't work, since these mods only roll on level 65+ gear.

Is Darkness Enthroned guaranteed from Ulaman? No. Ulaman always drops a rare Stygian Vise, and there's roughly a 50% chance the belt is a Darkness Enthroned instead. It's a coin flip per kill, not a guarantee.
