How Good Is the Tank in WARDOGS? Is Leveling Driver Worth It (Season 1)

You have been grinding the Driver track for a week, you are finally close to a tank, and the obvious question is whether it is actually worth it. Short answer: the tank is strong when your squad protects it and a liability the moment it is left alone — and the grind to reach one is deliberately long in Season 1. Here is how the Heavy Tank and Artillery Tank actually perform, exactly what hard-counters them, and how many levels of Driver (or Career) you are signing up for.

Quick answer: is the tank worth it in WARDOGS?

The tank is a high-impact, high-risk big-ticket item, not an "I win" button. In WARDOGS the Heavy Tank unlocks on the Driver track at level 35 and the Artillery Tank sits all the way up on the Career track at level 90 and costs $500,000 Cash to buy at the vendor — one of the most expensive purchases in the game. Once you field one it can dominate the opening of a match, but it is a huge, easy target that a single coordinated player can disable from an elevated angle with a rocket to the rear, and rocket helicopters counter it hard. It is worth leveling toward if you enjoy vehicle play and run with a squad that will screen you; it is a poor solo purchase. All figures below are Season 1 launch values (the game is in Early Access, patch 0.11, and everything resets when Season 2 begins on 15 October 2026).

How do tanks work in WARDOGS?

WARDOGS is not a battle royale or an extraction shooter — it is a 100-player, three-team King-of-the-Hill fight over a Control Zone, and vehicles are bought fresh from an in-match vendor with Cash. That framing matters for the tank because of the game's two-gate rule: a vehicle needs (a) enough levels on the relevant track to make it available, and (b) enough Cash to actually buy it at the vendor. Levels unlock access; Cash pays. Losing the tank when you die does not un-unlock it — you simply re-buy it next life if you have the Cash.

There are two tanks named in first-party WARDOGS material:

  • Heavy Tank — unlocks on the Driver track at level 35. In the Season 1 changelog BULKHEAD moved it off Career and onto Driver 35, so it is now the tank most Driver-mains chase first.
  • Artillery Tank — unlocks on the Career track at level 90 and, per the Season 1 vendor table, costs $500,000 (up from $400,000 in the beta). This is the marquee "top 5%" item.

Note that these are different tracks. If you have been "leveling driving," you are on the path to the Heavy Tank at Driver 35 — not the Artillery Tank, which requires the account-wide Career grind to 90. How good is the tank in a fight?

Well supported, it is one of the strongest things you can put on the field. Players describe it as devastating at the start of a match, before the enemy teams have organized anti-vehicle answers. It has the armor and firepower to break a contested Control Zone open and force two enemy teams to spend resources dealing with it rather than each other.

The catch is that it is enormous and slow, and the counters are cheap. Across the WARDOGS community boards this week, players who have fielded and killed tanks report the same weaknesses:

  • A rocket to the rear disables the engine. Players report that a single anti-tank rocket to the back knocks out the engine, and that once opponents notice a tank, it only takes one determined player on an elevated position to cripple it.
  • It is a bigger, easier target than an APC. Players who have destroyed enemy tanks from a Little Bird describe the tank as a very large target — even easier to hit than an APC.
  • Rocket helicopters are the hard counter. The recurring complaint is that ground vehicles — tanks included — struggle badly against rocket helis unless the team has anti-air up. If a coordinated squad wants your tank dead, there is very little a lone driver can do about it.

So the honest read is: the tank is strong with a team, fragile alone. If you push into a Control Zone in a tank with nobody watching your flanks and no friendly AA, expect it to burn. If your squad screens your rear and suppresses air, it wins fights and, importantly, prints Cash and objective control.

Is leveling Driver worth it for the tank?

This is really two questions: is the grind worth it, and is the purchase worth it.

On the grind: WARDOGS deliberately slowed leveling in Season 1. BULKHEAD's changelog says it verbatim: "Looking at the data we have decided to slow levels down around 10 to 20, and flatten the curve from 35 onward. This means our median players, at 20 to 25 hours, will be around level 20, and those wanting the big-ticket items, the top 5%, will need to grind." The published XP band shows role-track XP going up 100.9% at level 15 and 124.2% at level 20 versus the beta. Level 50 on a role track now costs 1,000,000 XP. Hitting Driver 35 for the Heavy Tank is a real time investment; reaching Career 90 for the Artillery Tank is a top-5%, weeks-long commitment by design.

On the purchase: even after you unlock it, you still have to afford it every life you want it. The Artillery Tank's $500,000 price is enormous relative to typical match earnings, and Cash persists between matches, so most players bank toward it over many games. That is exactly why the smartest early-game play is often not the tank at all.

Here is the part players consistently under-rate: teamplay and objective earning can out-pace saving for a tank. BULKHEAD's own devlog gives a concrete example — "an RPG with rockets could cost you about $3,000, but could earn you $10,000 if you destroy a packed enemy little bird" — and standing in the Hot Zone pays double Cash. WARDOGS pays for the whole teamplay loop — reviving, transporting friendlies, controlling the objective, spotting — not just kills. So if your goal is to bank the Cash for a tank, the fastest route is to play the objective and the support role well in the Hot Zone, then buy the tank when you can actually crew and protect it. Our how to make money fast in WARDOGS and Hot Zone double-cash guides cover the earning side; the Season 1 XP curve explains why the leveling feels so slow.

Heavy Tank vs Artillery Tank: which should you grind toward?

If you want a tank sooner and you are already a Driver-main, the Heavy Tank at Driver 35 is the realistic target — it is on the track you are already leveling and it arrives far earlier than Career 90. The Artillery Tank is a long-term, Career-track goal with a $500,000 price tag attached; treat it as an endgame flex, not a Season 1 priority for most players. Neither should be your first big purchase over the gear and vehicles that keep you alive and earning on the way up.

Remember the timing on all of this: Season 2 begins 15 October 2026, at which point Cash and levels reset (Cash auto-converts to Gold Bars, which persist). If you are close to a tank now, you have a narrow window to actually enjoy it before the wipe — see what to buy before the wipe.

Skip the grind: WARDOGS leveling and Cash the fast way

If you like the idea of rolling a tank but not the weeks of Driver or Career grinding to get there, that is exactly what our WARDOGS services are for. We save you the time; you play the fun part.

Want the tank without the grind? These are the fastest routes to a tank-capable account in Season 1 — ranked by what players actually need most:

  • WARDOGS Cash — hand-farmed Cash so you can afford big-ticket vehicles at the vendor. The Artillery Tank alone is $500,000, and you re-buy your loadout every deployment.
  • WARDOGS Career Leveling — push your Career track toward the level-90 Artillery Tank gate and the other big-ticket Career unlocks.
  • WARDOGS Class Leveling — level the Driver track to 35 for the Heavy Tank (or any other class track you want to specialise).
  • WARDOGS Rent a Pro — keep your own account and party up with a specialist who screens your tank and helps you win the Control Zone.
  • All WARDOGS services — the full WARDOGS catalog if you are not sure where to start.

A note on doing it the smart way: WARDOGS' developer BULKHEAD is explicit that Cash "must be earned through play" and that they monitor the economy for abuse, so we never touch exploits or two-account collusion farming — everything is legitimate, hand-done playtime that saves you the hours.

FAQ

Is the tank worth it in WARDOGS? It is worth it if you enjoy vehicle play and run with a squad that will protect your rear and suppress enemy air. Well supported, the tank is devastating and can break open a Control Zone; alone, it is a huge target that a single rocket to the rear can disable. It is a poor solo purchase and rarely your first big buy.

What level do you unlock the tank in WARDOGS? There are two. The Heavy Tank unlocks on the Driver track at level 35 (BULKHEAD moved it there in the Season 1 changelog). The Artillery Tank unlocks on the Career track at level 90 and costs $500,000 Cash at the vendor. If you have been leveling Driver, you are heading for the Heavy Tank, not the Artillery Tank.

Why do I never see a tank in matches? Because the Season 1 XP curve is slow by design — role-track XP is up to 124% higher at level 20 than in the beta, so most players are around level 20 at 20–25 hours played, well short of the Driver 35 / Career 90 tank gates. BULKHEAD flattened the curve so only the "top 5%" reach the big-ticket items quickly.

What counters a tank in WARDOGS? Rockets and rocket helicopters. Players report that a single anti-tank rocket to the rear disables the engine, that the tank is an even bigger target than an APC, and that rocket helis are a hard counter if your team has no anti-air. From an elevated angle, one determined player can knock out an unsupported tank.

Is it better to farm Cash or grind levels for a tank first? Bank the Cash while you level. You need both gates — the level to unlock the tank and the Cash to buy it every life — so playing the objective and the support loop (reviving, spotting, building, and holding the double-Cash Hot Zone) earns the Cash you will need by the time your track level catches up.

Do tanks carry over to Season 2? No. Season 2 begins 15 October 2026, and Cash and XP reset at the wipe (Cash auto-converts to permanent Gold Bars). Your tank unlock and the Cash to buy it are Season 1 assets, so if you are close now, use it before the reset.
