Applies to: Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, Season 4: Tidal Strike on Game Update 1.4.3.5, as of October 4, 2026. Weapon list taken from EA's live "Loadout Creation and Weapon Classes" roster; system rules from EA's "Progression in Battlefield 6" page, which EA labels "Recently Updated for Season 2."

Quick Answer

  • 14 weapons are locked behind Assignments right now, not Career Rank: KORD 6P67, NVO-228E, L85A3, QBZ-192, SG 553R, SCW-10, SL9, CZ3A1, KTS100 MK8, M240L, SVDM, PSR, 18.5KS-K and the vz. 61 machine pistol.
  • EA's own two pages disagree. The progression page still says "a dozen" and lists the L85AE, SWC-10 and MRAD. The live weapon roster lists 14 and names them L85A3, SCW-10 and PSR, with no MRAD anywhere.
  • The system itself is rank-gated. Class Challenge Assignments unlock at Career Rank 10, Weapon Challenge Assignments at Career Rank 13.
  • Every class has its own Class Assignment track, handing over two or three gadgets, the class's second Training Path and an extra loadout slot.
  • EA does not publish the challenge requirements. It states they are "available in game" only, which is why no official checklist exists anywhere.
  • Four of the five weapons EA has named for the Season 5 balance pass are Assignment unlocks — KTS100 MK8, SCW-10, SVDM and SG 553R. Only the KV9 comes from Career Rank.

Assignments are the part of Battlefield 6 progression that does not move while you play. Career Rank climbs on its own, Hardware XP accrues just for holding a gun, and the Battle Pass fills up on a timer. Assignments sit still until you go and do the exact thing they ask for — and EA has never printed what that thing is outside the game client.

What is an Assignment in Battlefield 6?

An Assignment is a named challenge set that unlocks a specific piece of hardware. EA splits them into four kinds, and the labels matter because they determine whether the thing you want is still obtainable.

Class Assignments are permanent. Every class has its own, and finishing it is the only route to that class's second Training Path.

Weapon Assignments are the launch-era challenge chains — RAPID FIRE, DANGER CLOSE, CLOSE QUARTERS, BULLET STORM, DEADEYE and POINT BLANK — each carrying one to three guns.

Seasonal Assignments are defined by EA as "A specific challenge - or set of challenges - to unlock new Hardware (or even smaller Hardware additions, such as weapon attachments across multiple weapons)."

Seasonal Catch-Up Challenges are the safety net: "If you missed a Battle Pass or Bonus Path, the Seasonal Catch-Up Challenges allow you to unlock that Hardware via challenge." The CZ3A1 and the vz. 61 are both on this track, under NIGHTFALL CATCH-UP 2 and 1.

The gate on all of it is Career Rank. EA's rank table puts "Class Challenge Assignments" at Rank 10, alongside the Recon Drone, and "Weapon Challenge Assignments" at Rank 13, alongside the Unguided Rocket Launcher. Below Rank 13 the weapon chains simply are not in your menu, which accounts for a large share of the "where are my assignments" threads.

Which Battlefield 6 weapons are locked behind Assignments?

Fourteen, across every primary class plus one secondary. The names and descriptions below are EA's own, taken from the live loadout roster.

KORD 6P67Assault RifleRAPID FIRE 1
NVO-228EAssault RifleRAPID FIRE 2

SVDMDMRDEADEYE 1
PSRSniper RifleDEADEYE 2
18.5KS-KShotgunPOINT BLANK 2
vz. 61SecondaryNIGHTFALL CATCH-UP 1

A few things fall out of that table. Two chains cross weapon classes: DEADEYE hands out a DMR and then a sniper rifle, and the Nightfall catch-up track pairs a machine pistol with an SMG. POINT BLANK has no step 1 on the roster, only a 2. And RAPID FIRE is the only three-stage chain, which makes the L85A3 the deepest single-chain unlock in the game.

The SCW-10 is the one most players chase first. EA describes it as "Chambered in 10mm, this modular modern SMG offers increased stopping power where other PDWs fall short" — and it is one of the five guns EA has flagged for Season 5 changes. Our SMG rankings cover where it currently sits against the other nine submachine guns on recoil and velocity.

Why do EA's own pages give two different weapon lists?

Because one of them has not been updated in three seasons. EA's progression page is tagged "Recently Updated for Season 2" and still reads: "The SWC-10, one of the dozen weapons available at launch that is unlockable through a Challenge." Its list runs KORD 6P67, NVO-228E, L85AE, QBZ-192, SG 553R, SWC-10, SL9, KTS100 MK8, M240L, 18.5KS-K, SVDM, MRAD.

The live loadout roster, which is the page EA actually maintains as the catalogue, contradicts it in four ways:

  • Count: 14 Assignment weapons, not twelve.
  • Spelling: L85A3, not L85AE. SCW-10, not SWC-10.
  • Replacement: the DEADEYE 2 sniper is the PSR, "A precision rifle chambered in the powerful 8.6x70mm cartridge." The MRAD does not appear on the roster at all.
  • Additions: the CZ3A1 and vz. 61 joined through the Nightfall catch-up track after that page was written.

Treat the roster page as current and the progression page as system documentation with a stale appendix. If you are hunting an MRAD assignment, you are hunting a name EA no longer uses.

What do the four Class Assignments actually give you?

More than the weapon chains do, and they unlock three ranks earlier. Each class has its own track, and it is the sole route to that class's alternate Training Path.

ClassGadgets unlockedTraining PathExtra
AssaultDeploy Beacon, Incendiary Round ShotgunBreacher or Frontliner, disputedLoadout Slot
EngineerVehicle Supply Crate, Aim Guided LauncherCombat EngineerLoadout Slot
SupportSmoke Grenade Launcher, Incendiary Airburst Launcher, Supply PouchFire SupportLoadout Slot
ReconDemolition Charge, Tracer DartSpec OpsLoadout Slot

One caveat on the Assault row. EA's progression page says the Assault Class Assignment rewards the "Frontliner Training Path and Loadout Slot," but EA's own Assault class page heads its gated section "Breacher (Unlocked via Assault Class Assignment)" and presents Frontliner as the default. The Engineer, Support and Recon class pages use the identical heading format and each agrees with the progression page. Three of four line up; only Assault does not, and EA has not resolved it. Plan around Breacher being the gated path.

That is nine gadgets, four Training Paths and four loadout slots behind the Class Assignment tracks. EA's description of the Training Path system makes the stakes explicit: "Each Class offers two distinct Training Paths - one unlocked by Default, the other by completing a specific Class Assignment challenge set." Skip the Class Assignment and half your class's progression tree stays invisible. Our classes guide breaks down what each path does in practice.

Assignments also feed the completionist track. EA counts "212 total Weapon and Vehicle Badges" and adds "one additional set of Badges for each Class, unlocked through their two Class Assignments," for 228 badges at full mastery.

Why is my Battlefield 6 assignment not tracking?

Four causes, in the order worth checking.

You are below the rank gate. Rank 10 for Class Assignments, Rank 13 for Weapon Assignments. Nothing displays before then.

You are in a mode that does not count. The standing disclaimer across EA's Battlefield 6 pages reads: "Stats in any Casual or Portal mode that backfill with AI are not tracked." If you are farming a challenge in a mode that fills with bots, the game may be recording nothing at all. This is the same trap covered in our bot lobby XP guide.

You are reading the objective wrong. Challenge text in this game is unusually literal, and the localisations are worse than the English. One recurring example on the Battlefield subreddit is a challenge that specifies a "Radio Control Tower" rather than any radio tower — and which, in the French client, reads only "Radio Tower," sending players to the wrong structure entirely. Nothing is broken; the requirement is narrower than the words suggest.

It is a known bug. Update 1.4.3.0 shipped three separate challenge fixes: EA corrected "an issue where certain events could display an incorrect end time in the Challenges tab," one "where Hardware attachments could disappear from Loadouts after viewing their Challenge unlock requirements," and one "where Challenge progression could display incorrectly on the End of Round screen." That last one is a display bug — progress was being made, just not shown. Game Update 1.4.3.5, the current live build, contains zero challenge entries, so no new assignment bug has been acknowledged since.

What EA will not give you is the checklist. The progression page states that the "exact challenge information for each assignment, as well as details on additional unlockables," is "available in game" — and only there. Any requirement list you find online is player-sourced.

Do Assignments matter going into Season 5?

More than usual, for one reason: the balance pass is aimed almost entirely at guns you have to earn through challenges.

EA's October 1, 2026 article names five weapons for Season 5 changes — the KTS100 MK8, SCW-10, SVDM, SG553R and KV9 — as part of "addressing the meta in REDSEC." Four of those five are Assignment unlocks. Only the KV9 is a Career Rank unlock, at Rank 45. If you have not run BULLET STORM 1, CLOSE QUARTERS 1, DEADEYE 1 and DANGER CLOSE 2, you are not holding four of the five guns the next patch is written about. Full detail on those changes is in our Season 5 weapon balance breakdown.

Season 5 also touches the Class Assignment payoff directly. EA has confirmed "the removal of the Drone Specialist and Hazmat Breacher alternate training paths" and a full rebalance of all four class Training Paths, with every class sharing the same Level 4: "Class gadget resupply rate increases by 10% with each improvement. Effect resets upon death." The Class Assignments themselves are unchanged — the reward on the other side of them is being rewritten.

Everything here comes with EA's own caveat on that article: "everything discussed here is subject to change." Season 5: Siege of Vegas still has no announced date, and EA says the update notes go live the day before the season does. Our Season 5 release date analysis works through the cadence.

What is the fastest order to clear them?

Class Assignments first, at Rank 10, because each one returns a loadout slot and a Training Path you will use on every gun afterwards. Then the chain that carries your main's class — CLOSE QUARTERS for SMG players, RAPID FIRE for assault rifles, DEADEYE if you sit back. Catch-up chains like NIGHTFALL last, since they exist precisely so they can be done late.

The hard part is not the challenge. It is that an Assignment weapon arrives bare: no optic, no muzzle, no grip, and a fresh Hardware XP bar that only moves when you perform with a gun you have not learned yet. Our attachments guide explains how the points cost system decides what you can actually bolt on once the gun is yours.

Assignments gate the gun. Hardware XP gates everything that makes it work.

FAQ

How many Battlefield 6 weapons are locked behind Assignments? 14 on EA's current loadout roster: three assault rifles, two carbines, three SMGs, two LMGs, one DMR, one sniper rifle, one shotgun and one secondary. EA's older progression page still says a dozen.

At what rank do Battlefield 6 Assignments unlock? Class Challenge Assignments appear at Career Rank 10 and Weapon Challenge Assignments at Career Rank 13. Neither is visible before its rank.

How do you unlock the SCW-10 in Battlefield 6? By completing the CLOSE QUARTERS 1 Assignment. EA does not publish its requirements outside the game client, so you have to open the Assignment in-game to read them.

Is the MRAD still an Assignment weapon in Battlefield 6? No. EA's current roster has no MRAD. The DEADEYE 2 sniper unlock is the PSR. The MRAD reference survives only on EA's progression page, which is tagged as last updated for Season 2.

Why does my Battlefield 6 challenge progress look stuck? Most often because the mode backfills with AI — EA states stats in any Casual or Portal mode that backfills with AI are not tracked — or because the objective wording is narrower than it reads. Update 1.4.3.0 also fixed a bug that displayed challenge progression incorrectly on the End of Round screen.

Do Class Assignments give anything besides gadgets? Yes. Each one also grants the class's second Training Path and an additional loadout slot, plus a dedicated badge set that counts toward the 228-badge total mastery figure.

Will Season 5 change the Assignment weapons? EA has named the KTS100 MK8, SCW-10, SVDM and SG 553R for balance changes alongside the KV9, but has published no numbers and no date, and states everything announced is subject to change.
