Diablo 4 Ogden's Sign: How to Get a Free Harlequin Crest (Shako) in Season 15

TL;DR — How do you get the free Harlequin Crest from Ogden's Sign in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Read all 10 Deckard's Journals scattered across Sanctuary to complete Deckard's Journey, then take the Deckard's Memory portal beside the Imperial Library waypoint in Caldeum into Tristram. Talk to Ogden at the tavern — the Dark Ones stole his tavern sign. Enter The Labyrinth through the red gate at Duin Abbey in the Strand, Scosglen, clear the Cathedral floors to the sealed room holding Snotspill, take Snotspill's Key, open the locked chest, and return the sign to Ogden for a Harlequin Crest (Shako) — the Mythic Unique helm that grants +6 Ranks to All Skills. Blizzard's Season of Hell's Legacy overview, Game8's Ogden's Sign walkthrough.

A guaranteed Mythic Unique, handed over by an innkeeper, for a quest nothing in the game points you toward.

That is the strange part of Season of Hell's Legacy. Blizzard rebuilt Diablo 1's Tristram for the franchise's 30th anniversary, hid a full fetch-quest chain inside it, and attached the single most contested helm in the game to the payoff. Most players are still farming Mythics the normal way — Horadric Cube upgrades, Duriel rotations, Pit pushes — while this one sits behind a tavern errand.

Below is the whole chain, verified September 22, 2026, against Blizzard's own season article, live item data, and player reports from this week. Including the one branching choice that a lot of people are getting wrong.

What is Ogden's Sign, and why does it pay out a Mythic?

Ogden is the tavern keeper in Tristram — the same Ogden from Diablo 1, where the quest was called Ogden's Sign and the reward was the original Harlequin Crest. Blizzard ported the beat almost intact for the anniversary season.

The setup: demons raided the tavern and took one thing. Not the ale, not the coin. The sign.

The quest doesn't appear in your journal from town. It starts when you speak to Ogden after arriving in Tristram, and it requires you to already be able to reach Tristram — which is its own multi-hour prerequisite.

Season 15 launched September 15, 2026, alongside the 30th-anniversary content (Blizzard's season announcement), and Diablo 4 peaked at 64,005 concurrent Steam players on September 20 (SteamDB charts). Patch 3.2.1 shipped with the season, and Hotfix 3 followed on September 18 — see our 3.2.1 patch notes breakdown. The window for this being fresh, uncontested knowledge is short.

Blizzard describes the anniversary content in one line:

"…defeat echoes of Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit, and Mephisto within the Durance of Hate."

Blizzard Entertainment, Celebrate 30 Years of Diablo in Season of Hell's Legacy

The Shako quest lives in the same zone as that fight, which is why it is worth doing the whole Tristram trip in one sitting.

How do you unlock Tristram in Season 15?

Tristram is its own zone this season, and the only way in is a portal called Deckard's Memory, which spawns beside the Imperial Library waypoint in Caldeum. That portal does not exist until you finish the hidden quest Deckard's Journey.

Deckard's Journey is not part of the main story, and the game gives you no marker for it. After the tavern introduction in Tarsarak, 10 Deckard's Journal satchels are placed in the open world — an open satchel with a scroll in it, shown as a green dot on the minimap when you're close. Read all ten and the quest completes itself, Cain shows you one last memory, and that memory becomes the permanent portal.

Distances below are in game units from the nearest waypoint or lair entrance, north-up, as mapped by AusCraft's Season 15 Tristram reference.

Journal 9 is the one that strands people. It is placed only in a public game, so if you run the season in a private lobby you will collect nine journals, find nothing at Oldstones, and assume you misread the map. Flip to a public game for that pickup.

For the lair-anchored entries (3 and 5), teleport to the lair and walk back out rather than crossing the zone on foot.

Once all ten are read, take the portal. Tristram stays open after that — you don't repeat this.

Where is Ogden, and how does the tavern sign quest start?

Ogden is in the tavern in the middle of Tristram. Speak to him and he tells you the Dark Ones robbed the place and took only the sign, which starts the fetch.

While you're in town, note two other NPCs on the same screen. Wirt — "Pssst… over here…" — is Tristram's obols vendor, and he matters for the Echo of Tristram chain covered further down. The rest of the townsfolk are the achievement trigger, not just flavor.

The sign itself is not in Tristram. It's underground, in the dungeon the demons dragged it into.

Where is Snotspill in The Labyrinth?

The Labyrinth is entered from the overworld, not from Tristram. Look for the red gate icon at Duin Abbey, in the Strand, Scosglen.

The dungeon descends through the old Diablo 1 floor names — Cathedral, Catacombs, Caves, and two Hell levels, tagged at levels 2, 7, 10, 15 and 16.

You do not need to clear all of it. The sign is held by Snotspill, a Dark One who sits in a walled-off room off the Cathedral floors — the same placement he had in Diablo 1, where he blocked the stairs down from Cathedral level four. Clear down through the Cathedral until you hit the sealed room.

Snotspill carries Snotspill's Key. The key opens the Locked Chest, and the chest holds Ogden's tavern sign. AOEAH's Season 15 secrets walkthrough.

Two practical notes before you go down:

  • Set your difficulty to something you can clear quickly. Nothing about this chain rewards a slow floor.
  • Everything on the way down is still a normal Diablo 4 pull. If your build is thin this early in the season, this is the step where a boss carry or a power-level run saves the evening — the Labyrinth trash scales with your Torment tier, and the Shako itself is worth far more on a character that can already use it.

Should you give the sign to Snotspill or return it to Ogden?

This is the branch, and it's where the misinformation is.

In Diablo 1, Snotspill asks you for the sign, and handing it over permanently locks you out of the Harlequin Crest. That behavior is documented on the Diablo Wiki's Ogden's Sign entry, and it's the version most guides are repeating because it's the version that's been written down for 30 years.

Diablo 4 rebuilt the same fork. Snotspill asks you to bring him his "magic banner" — which is Ogden's sign — so the game does present you with a genuine choice at that point (d4guides' Season 15 story breakdown).

What nobody has published is a rewards table for the Snotspill branch. Blizzard hasn't documented it, and we have no verified report confirming the helm still drops if you hand the sign over. We're not going to pretend that's settled.

Return the sign to Ogden. It is the path that pays out in both the 1996 version and the 2026 one, it costs you nothing, and a guaranteed Mythic is not the thing to gamble on a Reddit thread. If you want to test the Snotspill branch, test it on a second character after you already have the helm.

What does the Harlequin Crest actually do in Season 15?

The Harlequin Crest — everyone calls it the Shako — is a Mythic Unique helm, and it is the closest thing Diablo 4 has to a universally correct item. Every class wants it. Most builds want it over a perfectly-rolled class-specific helm.

Current stats: +6 Ranks to All Skills, on top of its Primary Core Stat and Maximum Life affixes. Game8's Ogden's Sign walkthrough.

You will still find pages listing 20% Damage Reduction and +4 Ranks. That is pre-rework data. The Mythic Uniques overhaul traded the Damage Reduction away for the higher all-skills bonus, and +6 with no Damage Reduction is what the helm reads on the live Season 15 build. If a page still shows Damage Reduction on the Shako, it hasn't been updated in two seasons. For where the other Mythics drop this season, see our Season 15 Mythic farming guide.

The normal ways to get a Mythic:

  • Random world drop at an extremely low rate
  • The Horadric Cube's Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic recipe, which takes a perfected non-Mythic Unique and returns a Mythic-ized version of that same item, stamped with the Crafted tag
  • Endgame boss and Pit farming at high Torment

That Crafted tag matters, because a character may equip only one Crafted tag item at a time, and Blizzard is explicit that only Mythics made with that recipe carry the tag. A Shako that drops from Ogden's chest is a quest reward, not a crafted one, which means it does not compete with a crafted Mythic you already have equipped. That is the real value of this quest, and it's why the fetch is worth the evening even if you've already cubed a Mythic this season. Our Horadric Cube crafting guide covers how that recipe and the Crafted tag interact.

Want the Shako on a character that can actually use it?

What else should you grab on the same Tristram trip?

You've unlocked a zone that stays open. Clear the rest of it in the same session.

The Sign Snooper achievement. While the tavern sign is missing, ask the Tristram townsfolk about it. Talking your way around town unlocks the achievement — do it before you hand the sign back, since the conversation depends on the sign still being gone.

The Butcher quest. The Tristram quest line also hands out 5 Prime Rib — Moophisto summoning material you would otherwise farm in the Secret Cow Level (walkthrough video). Free summons for a boss most players are buying materials for.

Echo of Baal, Echo of Mephisto and Echo of Diablo fought at once in the Echo of Tristram arena All three Prime Evil echoes share one arena behind the Tristram fountain portal. via consolepulse.com (web image search)

The Echo of Tristram. This is the big one, and it's a separate chain. You need all three Splinters of Evil — Terror from Diablo, Destruction from Baal, Hatred from Mephisto — which drop from the season's pinnacle encounters. The game files gate them at Torment 10, but they drop lower — AusCraft's tested walkthrough records a Torment 7 drop. Cube all three together in a hidden recipe to make Wirt's Lucky Coin, then drop a coin in the fountain in the south-east part of Tristram.

Two things about that fountain, both from AusCraft's tested walkthrough:

  • You must be on Torment 6 or higher. Below that, the fountain will not open the portal.
  • The fountain can eat a coin. Players have had the water turn red with no portal appearing, including one on Torment 12. The water turning to blood is just the animation, not a success signal — so hold a spare coin if you can, and don't assume red water means it worked.

Through the portal sits the arena where the Echo of Diablo, the Echo of Baal, and the Echo of Mephisto all fight you at once. The fight starts the moment you walk into the middle. If you're pushing that, our Torment 12 Mephisto pinnacle guide covers the damage profile you'll be surviving.

How long does the whole chain take?

Honest answer: the Shako is fast, the prerequisite is not.

Deckard's Journey is the cost. Ten satchels across five regions, with one of them locked to public games, is a real cross-map tour — budget an evening if you're doing it cold, less if you already picked up journals incidentally while leveling. Check your journal before you start; you may already have three or four read.

Once the Deckard's Memory portal exists, the actual Ogden chain is short: portal to Tristram, talk to Ogden, waypoint to the Strand, clear the Cathedral down to Snotspill's room, kill him, open the chest, portal back, hand it over. That's a short dungeon run and two conversations.

Which means the correct order of operations is: finish the journals first, on your own schedule, and treat the Shako as the thing you collect the moment the portal opens.

FAQ

Is the Harlequin Crest from Ogden's Sign guaranteed? Yes — returning the tavern sign to Ogden rewards a Harlequin Crest. It's a fixed quest reward, not a drop chance. That makes it one of the very few deterministic Mythic sources this season, alongside the Horadric Cube's Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic recipe. Blizzard's Horadric Cube rules.

Can I do Ogden's Sign without finishing Deckard's Journey? No. Tristram is only reachable through the Deckard's Memory portal at the Imperial Library waypoint in Caldeum, and that portal does not spawn until all 10 Deckard's Journals have been read. Portal requirement.

Why can't I find the Deckard's Journal at Oldstones? It's placed only in a public game. Switch out of your private lobby, return to the Downs in Scosglen about 158m SW of the Tirmair waypoint, and it will be there. Journal placement.

Where exactly is The Labyrinth entrance? It's the red gate icon at Duin Abbey, in the Strand region of Scosglen — entered from the overworld, not from inside Tristram. Snotspill waits in a sealed room off the Cathedral floors, so you don't need to run the dungeon to the bottom. AOEAH's walkthrough.

Does giving the sign to Snotspill cancel the Shako? In Diablo 1 it did, permanently. Diablo 4 rebuilds the same choice — Snotspill asks for the sign as his "magic banner" — but no rewards table has been published for that branch and we have no verified report either way. Return the sign to Ogden; that's the branch confirmed to pay out. Diablo Wiki on the original behavior.

Does the quest Shako count against the one-Crafted-Mythic limit? The limit applies to Mythics carrying the Crafted tag from the Horadric Cube upgrade recipe. A quest-awarded Harlequin Crest isn't crafted, so it doesn't occupy that slot. Crafted-tag rules.

What Torment do I need for the Tristram fountain portal? Torment 6 or higher. Below that the fountain takes your Wirt's Lucky Coin without opening the Echo of Tristram portal. Tested fountain requirement.
