FC 27 Future Stars Academy Evo: All Four Steps, Every Path Choice and How to Pick Your Player

The Future Stars Academy Evo is the best free item in FC 27 right now — an 85-rated Future Stars card for anyone with a squad slot and six days of patience. It is also the first Evolution this year that makes you commit to a permanent choice at every step, which is why the launch-night r/EASportsFC thread filled up with players saying they would wait to enrol because nobody knew what the later steps offered.

You do not have to wait. All four steps are already mapped. Here is the whole chain, every path, and the two entry rules that quietly disqualify most of the players you would reach for first.

Quick answer: The FC 27 Future Stars Academy is four separate Evolutions, not one, releasing Friday 9, Sunday 11, Tuesday 13 and Friday 16 October 2026. Entry is any ST or CAM rated 80 or lower, with 86 Pace or less and no more than seven PlayStyles, born on or after 9 October 2003. Every eligible player exits step one at 81 OVR and finishes at 85 OVR — the rating is fixed, so your base card only decides the face stats underneath it. It is free, not repeatable, and one player per club. The decisive choice is step three, which grants the card's first PlayStyle: Rapid, Power Shot or Technical. Pick that first, then work backwards.

Phase check: FC 27 is in Season 1, week 4 — the season runs to 22 October 2026 (EA-confirmed in the Launch Rewards Pitch Notes). Future Stars is the live campaign, launched 9 October 2026 after Destined for Glory closed, and it is the third and final Season 1 campaign. Everything below is current as of 10 October 2026, 06:00 UTC — before Academy II drops.

What is the Future Stars Academy Evo in FC 27?

EA's returning "build your own promo card" Evolution, running this year on the new Pathways system. EA's Future Stars article puts it plainly:

"The Future Stars Academy returns in EA SPORTS FC™ 27, turning present-day prodigies into ready-made superstars. Choose an eligible ST or CAM born on or after 9 October, 2003, enrol them into the Academy, and progress through four Academy Evolutions to create your own Future Star."

The wording matters: four Academy Evolutions, not four levels inside one Evolution. Academy I is live now; II, III and IV unlock on their own dates, each with a maximum entry rating that matches the previous step's output. That is the mechanism that locks you onto the path — put another Evolution on the player in between and you risk pushing them over the next step's cap.

EA's pitch for reviving the Academy is usage data. Team 1 is headlined by Rio Ngumoha — "one of England's most promising young talents", in EA's words — whose FC 26 Academy item drew over 312,000 Evolutions, with the resulting cards scoring more than 37.5 million goals and 30.7 million assists. EA footnotes that as sampled, rounded data from 17 September 2025 to 15 September 2026, so treat it as scale rather than precision. The Academy card is the most-used Evolution EA ships.

One thing most coverage has skipped: a dedicated objective is coming. EA's wording is "Look out for the Future Stars Academy Objective dropping during Future Stars, allowing you to earn rewards for playing with your Future Stars Academy Player Item." No date, no reward list — but if you enrol a player you actually want to use, that objective pays you twice.

Who is eligible for the Future Stars Academy Evo?

Four requirements, two of which cost people their first pick.

RequirementLimit
PositionCAM or ST only
OverallMax 80 OVR
PaceMax 86 PAC
PlayStylesMax 7
Born on or after9 October 2003
RepeatableNo — one player, one club

The birthdate rule means your player must be 23 or younger on release day. The two that bite are Pace and PlayStyles: the 86 Pace ceiling rules out the quick young wingers-turned-strikers most people reach for first, and the seven-PlayStyle cap excludes a lot of the special items sitting in clubs after three weeks of packs. If a card you expected to work is greyed out, check those two first — our FC 27 Evolution eligibility guide covers every hidden requirement that makes the game say no.

One player in the launch-night thread spotted the strategic consequence immediately: because Academy I applies a +34 OVR upgrade (per FUT.GG's tracker), a 70-rated card and an 80-rated card both exit at 81. Their point — that any card you enrol will look almost identical attribute-wise, so body type and existing PlayStyles matter more than the base rating — is the best advice in that thread. The exception is a card with one catastrophically low stat, which the flat boosts will not fully rescue.

So the real selection criteria, in order: league and nation for your links, body type and height, and the PlayStyles the card already owns. The base overall is close to irrelevant.

When do all four Academy steps release?

EA published the ladder as a dated graphic on its own Future Stars page. Cross-checked against FUT.GG and Soccer Gaming:

StepReleaseMax entry OVRResult
Academy IFriday 9 October 20268081 OVR
Academy IISunday 11 October 20268182 OVR
Academy IIITuesday 13 October 20268283 OVR
Academy IVFriday 16 October 20268385 OVR

The dates on EA's graphic read 09/10, 11/10, 13/10 and 16/10 against items rated 81, 82, 83 and 85 — primary-source confirmation of both the schedule and the rating ladder. Note the Sunday and Tuesday drops: this is not the usual Friday-only cadence, so set a reminder.

Two consequences. You cannot rush the card — the 85 arrives no earlier than Friday 16 October, whatever you do. And the deadline outlives Season 1: FUT Mind lists Academy I as startable until 26 October 2026 at 18:00 UTC, with all levels due by 2 November 2026 at 18:00 UTC, both past the 22 October cut-off. Those timestamps are the tracker's, not EA's. Our Season 1 expiry guide covers what else survives the 22nd.

FUT.GG notes Evolutions normally unlock at 18:00 UK time (17:00 UTC), but EA has published no times for these steps — treat the hour as a pattern, not a promise.

What does each Academy step actually give you?

Academy I, per FUT.GG's tracker, is five levels deep and barely asks anything. Levels one to four each require "Play 1 match in Squad Battles on min Semi-Pro difficulty (or Rush/Rivals/Champions/Live Events) using your active EVO player in game"; level five upgrades that to win 1 match on the same terms. Four matches and one win for a +34 OVR jump to 81. (Trackers count levels slightly differently — FUTBIN lists four — but the requirements match.)

The upgrades arrive as broad attribute boosts across shooting, passing, dribbling, pace and physical, and the path choice lands at the final level:

  • Option A — Pace: acceleration, sprint speed, positioning, finishing, agility, plus a +2 Weak Foot.
  • Option B — Shooting: finishing, shot power, long shots, volleys, composure, plus a +2 Weak Foot.
  • Option C — Dribbling: agility, balance, ball control, dribbling, composure, plus +2 Skill Moves. FUT.GG flags this one as its recommended route.

The remaining three steps, again per FUT.GG:

StepBase upgradeChoose one path
Academy II (11 Oct)+1 to 82, with finishing, long shots, reactions, dribbling, positioning, composure and stamina boostsPlaymaker (vision, crossing, short/long passing, curve) · Powerhouse (heading, jumping, stamina, strength, aggression) · All-Rounder (passing plus physical)
Academy III (13 Oct)None — the path is the whole stepPace + Rapid · Shooting + Power Shot · Dribbling + Technical. Each gives +1 to 83 and a PlayStyle, capped at three PlayStyles total
Academy IV (16 Oct)+2 to 85, with long shots, composure, strength, jumping and stamina boostsShooting, which adds Low Driven Shot (cap of four PlayStyles), or Passing and stat round-out (vision, passing, reactions, ball control, composure)

A widely repeated launch-night complaint was that the Academy "gives zero PlayStyles". That is true of Academy I only — the PlayStyle arrives at Academy III on 13 October, with a second at Academy IV if you take the Shooting path. Worth knowing before you write the Evo off on day one.

Which Academy path should you choose?

Decide step three first. The PlayStyle it grants — Rapid, Power Shot or Technical — shapes the finished card more than any attribute boost, and FC 27 cut the maximum PlayStyle+ per item from five to three, which makes each one worth more than it was last year. Work backwards from that choice.

Three coherent builds:

  • The runner. Pace at I → Powerhouse at II → Pace with Rapid at III → Shooting at IV. The 86 Pace entry cap means your base card is not fast to begin with, so this is the only route to a genuine in-behind striker.
  • The finisher. Shooting at I → All-Rounder at II → Shooting with Power Shot at III → Shooting with Low Driven Shot at IV. Two shooting PlayStyles on an 85.
  • The creator. Dribbling at I → Playmaker at II → Dribbling with Technical at III → Passing at IV. The CAM build, and the one that gets most from the +2 Skill Moves at step one.

Step two is the least consequential: Playmaker for a CAM, Powerhouse for a target man, All-Rounder if undecided.

Two rules matter more than any build. Path choices are permanent — the only undo is Remove Last Evolution, which strips the whole most recent step and cannot be reversed. And keep the player on the Academy path between steps: each step delivers exactly the next step's maximum entry rating, so any other Evo applied in between can push the card over the cap and strand it. Does your Academy player get the real-world Future Stars upgrades?

This is the most important question, and nobody can answer it yet.

Proper Future Stars items from Team 1 are live cards. EA published the upgrade table, and the headline is brutal: "All tracking will begin on 9 October, with the live upgrades releasing on 3 February. Upgrades are based solely on domestic league match performance." Soccer Gaming reads that as 3 February 2027; EA's page states only the day and month.

The thresholds, for players outside the Americas:

Real-world milestoneUpgrade
4 starts+1 OVR (max 86)
8 starts+1 OVR (max 87)
ATT/MID: 7 goals + assists · DEF/GK: 4 clean sheets+1 PlayStyle+ (max 1)
ATT/MID: 10 goals + assists · DEF/GK: 7 clean sheets5★ Weak Foot

Players in the NWSL, MLS, Liga MX and LPF get a much shorter ladder — 2 starts, 3 starts, then 2 and 4 goals/assists (2 and 3 clean sheets for defenders and keepers) for the same four upgrades — because their domestic seasons do not line up with Europe's. ATT/MID covers CM, CAM, LW, LM, RW, RM and ST; DEF/GK covers GK, RB, LB, CB and CDM, and a player must feature in the match to qualify for a clean sheet. Two EA footnotes matter if you buy a Future Stars card rather than build one: an item that already has a PlayStyle+ gets a base PlayStyle instead, and one already on a 5★ weak foot gets 5★ skill moves instead.

The launch-night reaction in the Carlos Espí SBC thread was predictable: one player called the February wait "ridiculous", another guessed the date was copy-pasted from an older title or should read "up to" 3 February. It is neither — the campaign has been restructured as a live one that tracks from day one and pays out mid-season.

And here is the gap: EA has not published whether an item built through the Academy Evolutions is eligible for that upgrade path. The table on EA's page is presented for Future Stars Player Items generally; the Academy section is written separately and says nothing about live tracking. Assume nothing. If the live upgrades are what you want, the packable and SBC items are the safe route; if you want a free 85 to use for the next three weeks, the Academy is the right play regardless.

Is the Academy Evo worth your Evolution slot?

Yes — easily. The grind is a handful of matches against Semi-Pro AI, the cost is zero coins, and the output is an 85-rated special item with up to two PlayStyles and an upgraded weak foot or skill moves. The only other route to a Future Stars card right now is the Carlos Espí SBC, which Soccer Gaming prices at roughly 40,000 coins of fodder, or packs.

What it costs you is the slot and the six days: Academy IV does not land until 16 October and the chain wants the player sitting there throughout. If your slots are committed to the week-three pathways, finish those first — we ranked them in our best FC 27 Evolutions for week three guide. And remember EA has already trimmed Evolution upgrade scale this year, which makes a guaranteed 85 unusually good value by FC 27 standards.

Short on time or fodder for the Academy matches and the Espí SBC? Every step is gated behind matches played with the Evo card in your XI, and the SBC route wants tradeable fodder. We handle both ends — no cheats, no bots, no injectors, and no promise of zero risk, because EA's User Agreement still prohibits coin transfers. Just paced, human delivery.

What else is live in Future Stars week one?

  • Team 1 is 15 players, per Soccer Gaming's list, headlined by Ngumoha.
  • The Week 1 Live Event is "Back to Basics", an Exhibition that locks both teams into the 4-4-2 formation; its group reward is a Future Stars Wieke Kaptein item, per Soccer Gaming.
  • A Future Stars Celebration Objective wants 7 matches in Squad Battles on minimum Semi-Pro (or Rivals, Champions, Live Events or Rush) with at least three players born on or after 9 October 2003 in your XI, per FUT Mind — which pairs neatly with the Academy matches.
  • Week 2 brings the PlayStyle+ Lab. EA: "The PlayStyle Lab levels up during Future Stars Week 2, introducing the PlayStyle+ Lab alongside the release of the first UEFA Star Performers that are eligible for PlayStyle+ upgrades starting 17 October."
  • The second Ultimate Gauntlet drops in Week 2 with a new Flash Rush Event — our first Ultimate Gauntlet guide covers the squad-rule format.

FAQ

When do the other Academy steps drop? Academy II on Sunday 11 October 2026, Academy III on Tuesday 13 October, Academy IV on Friday 16 October. FUT.GG notes Evolutions normally unlock at 18:00 UK time (17:00 UTC), but EA has not published times for these steps.

Does the base card's rating matter? Barely. Academy I applies roughly a +34 OVR upgrade, so every eligible player exits at 81 and finishes at 85. Prioritise league and nation links, body type, height and existing PlayStyles instead. A card with one extremely low stat is the only case where the base matters, because the flat boosts will not fully fix it.

Which path gives the best PlayStyle? The decision is at Academy III on 13 October: Rapid, Power Shot or Technical. Rapid for a striker who needs to get in behind, Power Shot for a finisher, Technical for a CAM. Academy IV can add Low Driven Shot if you take its Shooting path, up to a cap of four PlayStyles.

Will my Academy card get the real-world Future Stars upgrades on 3 February? Unknown. EA published the live upgrade table for Future Stars Player Items and described the Academy separately, without saying whether Academy items track. Nobody can answer this yet — do not buy or build on the assumption that they do.

Why is my player not eligible? Check Pace and PlayStyles first — the caps are 86 Pace and seven PlayStyles, on top of max 80 OVR, CAM or ST only, and born on or after 9 October 2003. The Evo is also not repeatable, so a player already enrolled blocks the slot permanently.

How long do I have? FUT Mind lists Academy I as startable until 26 October 2026 at 18:00 UTC, with all levels due by 2 November 2026 at 18:00 UTC — past the 22 October end of Season 1. EA has not published those deadlines itself.
