Version 7.1 shipped two full World Quest chains on 23 September 2026, and the bigger of the two — "Swords and Secrets" — comes with a warning HoYoverse rarely puts in writing. Buried at the bottom of the official overview notice is a line most players have not read yet: it takes seven calendar days to finish.
That single sentence changes how you plan the week. This is not a quest you clear in one sitting, and no amount of Resin, Story Keys or skill will compress it. This guide is current as of 24 September 2026, one day into Version 7.1 "A Rekviem for the Underworld".
Quick answer: "Swords and Secrets" auto-accepts once you hit Adventure Rank 18 and finish Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act III, "White Night, Like a Dream Upon Waking." It is permanently available after the 7.1 update, so there is no deadline — but HoYoverse states it takes 7 calendar days to complete the whole chain, because later steps are time-gated behind the daily server reset at 04:00 server time. Finishing it awards the "Druzhna Special Dispatch Order" and the Prime Ice Construct Appearance "Construct Appearance: Flutterwing." Using the Dispatch Order gives Vesna a Sword Spirit that accompanies her during flight.
What is "Swords and Secrets" in Genshin Impact 7.1?
"Swords and Secrets" is a Snezhnaya World Quest chain introduced with Version 7.1. It is not an event, and it is not part of the Archon Quest — it sits alongside "A Rekviem for the Underworld" as the region's connective tissue, following the Druzhna, the order of sword-bearing officers that Vesna commands.
HoYoverse gave it its own official overview announcement, which is the studio's standard signal that a World Quest is substantial rather than a one-room errand. Only two quests in 7.1 got that treatment: this one and "Upstream Variations."
The opening line of the notice explains the part that confuses people most: "Travelers who reach the required Adventure Rank and complete the prerequisite quests will automatically accept the World Quest 'Swords and Secrets.'" There is no NPC to find and no exclamation mark to chase. If you qualify, it lands in your quest log on its own. If it has not appeared, you do not qualify yet — and that is a prerequisite problem, not a bug.
How do you unlock "Swords and Secrets"?
Two requirements, both hard gates:
- Adventure Rank 18 or above.
- Complete Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act III, "White Night, Like a Dream Upon Waking."
The AR requirement is trivial for anyone who has been playing at all. The Act III requirement is the real wall, and it is a chain of its own. Chapter VII, "Everwinter Without Mercy," runs in four acts:
- Act I — "Everwinter Without Mercy" (AR 18, plus Mondstadt's "Song of the Dragon and Freedom")
- Act II — "Wraith's Nocturne" (AR 18)
- Act III — "White Night, Like a Dream Upon Waking" (added in 7.1: Light and Shadow, Intertwined / Sparks Converging Upon the Tundra / One Move Left to Make)
- Act IV — "A Rekviem for the Underworld" (added in 7.1: Delusion / Etched in Time / Black Feathers Scattered at Parting)
So the practical unlock path is: finish the Mondstadt prologue, then Acts I and II of the Snezhnaya chapter, then the newly released Act III. Only then does "Swords and Secrets" appear. Act IV is not required — it sits after the World Quest's gate, which means you can run the chain and the back half of the Archon Quest in parallel. Our full breakdown of that questline, including the reward window, is in the Genshin 7.1 Archon Quest guide.
Why does "Swords and Secrets" take 7 calendar days?
This is the detail worth planning around, and HoYoverse states it plainly: "It will take 7 calendar days to complete all quests in 'Swords and Secrets.' Travelers, please plan your time accordingly."
The mechanism behind that sentence is the daily reset. Genshin's reset fires at 04:00 server time, and one of the things it advances is time-gated quest progress. A chain built this way releases one segment per reset: you clear today's step, the quest tells you to come back later, and the next segment only becomes available after the next 04:00 rollover. Seven segments, seven resets, seven calendar days minimum.
Three consequences that matter:
- Starting late costs you nothing. The quest is permanently available, so a day-7 start finishes on day 13 with identical rewards. There is no expiry to race.
- Starting early costs you nothing either, and it parallelises. Because the gate is a clock rather than a resource, the cheapest play is to trigger day one as soon as you clear Act III, then let it tick in the background while you do everything else in 7.1.
- Missing a day does not reset progress, it just pushes your completion date out by that many days. The chain waits.
Your reset time depends on your server, and these offsets are fixed year-round — Genshin does not observe daylight saving:
- Asia — UTC+8, so reset is 04:00 UTC+8 (20:00 UTC the previous day)
- Europe — UTC+1, so reset is 04:00 UTC+1 (03:00 UTC)
- America — UTC−5, so reset is 04:00 UTC−5 (09:00 UTC)
If you play on Europe and log in at 23:00 local, you have not hit the next reset yet — the segment you are waiting on unlocks five hours later, not at local midnight. This is the single most common reason a player thinks the chain is bugged.
What are the "Swords and Secrets" rewards?
The announcement lists two named quest rewards, on top of the usual World Quest Primogems, Mora and EXP:
- "Druzhna Special Dispatch Order" — a usable item. The notice adds: "After using the 'Druzhna Special Dispatch Order,' a Sword Spirit will accompany Vesna during flight."
- "Construct Appearance: Flutterwing" — a Prime Ice Construct Appearance.
Read the Sword Spirit line carefully, because it is a two-step reward, not a one-step one. Completing the quest gives you the Dispatch Order; the flight companion only appears after you use it. Players who finish the chain, see an item drop into their inventory and never open it will wonder where their cosmetic went.
Both rewards are cosmetic rather than combat power. That is worth stating up front, because it changes the priority calculus: if you are optimising purely for pulls, the chain is not urgent. If you are playing Vesna as your main and want the visual, it is a seven-day lead time — and you should start it today rather than in three weeks. Vesna's actual kit, Ascension materials and team options are covered in our Genshin Vesna Build 7.1 guide.
What is "Upstream Variations" and how is it different?
"Upstream Variations" is the other 7.1 World Quest chain with an official overview notice, and it is structured identically — same auto-accept, same permanent availability, same seven-day statement: "It will take 7 calendar days to complete all quests in 'Upstream Variations.'"
What differs is the gate and the payout:
- Unlock: Adventure Rank 18 or above, complete Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act II "Wraith's Nocturne," and unlock "Meeting Point: Tidesong Cavern" and upgrade that Meeting Point to Level 2.
- Reward: the "Happy-Quacky Phonograph Ducky." Per the announcement, "Using 'Happy-Quacky Phonograph Ducky' will grant Vodyanitsa a brand-new decorative appearance."
Two things follow. First, "Upstream Variations" unlocks one act earlier than "Swords and Secrets" — Act II rather than Act III — so most players will qualify for it first. Second, its extra requirement is not a quest at all: the Meeting Point upgrade is a separate progression system, and if the chain has not auto-accepted despite Act II being cleared, that Level 2 upgrade is almost certainly what is missing.
The efficient play is to run both simultaneously. Because each is gated by the same daily reset rather than by a shared resource, two seven-day chains running in parallel still finish in seven days, not fourteen. Vodyanitsa's own kit and materials are in our Genshin Vodyanitsa Build 7.1 guide.
"How do I get to the new quests?" — why players are stuck on day two
In the 72 hours after 7.1 went live, the most-repeated question across the Genshin subreddits was some version of "How do I get to the new quests?" Almost every case resolves to the same three causes, in descending order of frequency.
You are mid-Natlan and have never touched Snezhnaya. Chapter VII is a full regional chapter with its own prerequisite chain. Being current on a different region's Archon Quest does not carry over. One reply that circulated widely put it correctly: "Have you done the other Snezhnaya archon quests? I believe you have to complete those first before being able to select a character." Acts I and II are not optional.
You finished Act III but expected a quest marker. There isn't one. The chain auto-accepts and appears in your quest log directly. Open the Quest menu and check the World Quest tab rather than scanning the map.
You are on "Upstream Variations" and stuck on the Meeting Point. Act II alone is not sufficient — Tidesong Cavern must be unlocked and at Level 2. This is the one requirement of the four that is not a quest completion, and it is the one people skip.
A fourth non-cause, for completeness: the 40-day window people keep quoting in the same threads — "you have 40 days to claim the character" — refers to a separate 7.1 free-character offer, not to these World Quests. Both chains are permanent. Do not let that deadline push you into rushing this one; the genuinely dated 7.1 rewards are listed in our Genshin 7.1 free Primogems guide.
What is not documented yet
Being honest about this is more useful than pretending otherwise. As of 24 September 2026, there is no complete public walkthrough of "Swords and Secrets." The community wiki's page for the chain is still marked as a stub with its quest list unwritten, and the top search results are the HoYoLAB announcement, that stub, and a Russian-language aggregator. That is not an oversight — it is the seven-day gate. Nobody on any server has reached segment seven yet, because the earliest possible start was 23 September and the reset maths does not allow it before roughly 29 September.
What this means practically: any site publishing a "full walkthrough" today is either padding the announcement text or speculating. Step-by-step objectives, puzzle solutions and the chain's individual quest names will only be verifiable from about 29–30 September 2026 onward.
One 7.1 element you will meet along the way is the new field enemy, the Guardian Blade of Drifting Snow, which fights using ice coffins. Its published behaviour is that ice coffins can become fragile from Stellar Glimmer reactions, at which point they are especially vulnerable to Electro and Anemo attacks — useful if a segment of the chain drops you into one of those fights. The reaction system behind that is broken down in our Stellar-Conduct vs Stellar Swirl guide.
What should you do while the seven days tick?
Because the chain progresses on a clock you cannot accelerate, the correct schedule is: trigger it immediately, then spend the week on the things that do have deadlines.
- Day 1: clear Chapter VII Act III, confirm both World Quests have auto-accepted, do the first available segment of each.
- Days 2–7: log in once per day after your server's 04:00 reset, clear that day's segment of both chains — a few minutes each — then get on with dated events.
- Throughout: Version 7.1's timed events are the actual scarce resource. The dated line-up, with per-event windows, is in our Genshin 7.1 events calendar.
The one mistake to avoid is deferring the start "until I have time to do it properly." There is no version of this chain that you can do properly in one sitting. Every day you delay the first segment is a day added to the end.
FAQ
Is "Swords and Secrets" a limited-time quest in Genshin Impact? No. The official overview notice lists its start time as "Permanently available after the Version 7.1 update." There is no expiry, so starting it weeks later carries no penalty beyond the seven-day completion time itself.
How do I unlock "Swords and Secrets"? Reach Adventure Rank 18 or above and complete Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act III, "White Night, Like a Dream Upon Waking." It then auto-accepts — there is no NPC to talk to and no quest marker to find.
Why can't I finish "Swords and Secrets" in one day? HoYoverse states the chain takes 7 calendar days. Later segments are time-gated behind the daily server reset at 04:00 server time, so only one part becomes available per day. Nothing you spend — Resin, Story Keys, Primogems — shortens it.
What time is the daily reset for my server? 04:00 server time in every region. Asia is UTC+8, Europe is UTC+1 and America is UTC−5, and those offsets are fixed year-round because Genshin does not observe daylight saving.
What do you get for completing "Swords and Secrets"? The "Druzhna Special Dispatch Order" and the Prime Ice Construct Appearance "Construct Appearance: Flutterwing." After you use the Dispatch Order, a Sword Spirit accompanies Vesna during flight. You must actually use the item for the flight companion to appear.
How is "Upstream Variations" different from "Swords and Secrets"? It unlocks one act earlier — Adventure Rank 18 plus Chapter VII Act II "Wraith's Nocturne" — but it adds a non-quest requirement: you must unlock "Meeting Point: Tidesong Cavern" and upgrade it to Level 2. Its reward is the "Happy-Quacky Phonograph Ducky," which grants Vodyanitsa a new decorative appearance.
Can I run both 7.1 World Quests at the same time? Yes, and you should. Both are gated by the same daily reset rather than by a shared resource, so running them in parallel still completes both in seven days rather than fourteen.
Where is the full "Swords and Secrets" walkthrough? It does not exist yet as of 24 September 2026, and that is expected. The seven-day gate means the earliest any player can reach the final segment is around 29 September 2026, so step-by-step objectives are not verifiable before then.
