Modern Warfare 4 Beta Warzone Explained: Zodiac Resurgence, When It's Playable & How to Prep

Quick answer (TL;DR)

Updated August 27, 2026 — Zodiac goes live tomorrow. Warzone enters the MW4 Beta when the Open Beta opens at 10:00 AM PT on Friday, August 28 (1:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM BST / 7:00 PM CEST) and stays playable until 10:00 AM PT on Tuesday, September 1. Preload has been open on every platform since 9:00 AM PT on Wednesday, August 26. Activision has now officially described the map, and the Beta level cap has been confirmed — both were unconfirmed when this guide first published, and both are updated below.

Yes — Warzone is in the Modern Warfare 4 Beta, but only during Weekend 2 (August 28 – September 1, 2026). Activision confirmed the beta debuts a brand-new Warzone Resurgence map called Zodiac, and this is the first time in Warzone's history that it's playable in an open beta rather than shown behind closed doors at Call of Duty: NEXT. Warzone is not in the Early Access weekend (August 21 – 25) — that first weekend is Multiplayer and a Campaign mission only. Weekend 2 is open to everyone, no preorder needed, and adds Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. MW4 itself launches globally on October 23, 2026. For how the full Warzone integration works at launch, see our MW4 Warzone integration guide.

The one-line version: if you want to try Zodiac, you need to be online August 28 – September 1, on any platform, and it's free — but because it's Resurgence (fast respawns, aggressive lobbies), your K/D and loadout habits from big-map BR won't carry you. Matchmaking in the beta also gives a first look at how MW4 SBMM explained — the system determining who you're up against. Here's every confirmed detail, what's still unconfirmed, and how to get Warzone-ready before it drops.

Every year the Call of Duty beta is the first real look at the new game — but 2026 is different. For the first time ever, Activision is putting Multiplayer, a Campaign mission, and Warzone all in one beta, and Warzone's slice is a new Resurgence map named Zodiac. That's a genuinely historic first: Warzone has never had a playable open beta before.

This guide separates what Activision has actually confirmed from what's still rumored, gives you the exact playable window for the Warzone weekend, explains how Resurgence plays on Zodiac, and shows you how to prep so you're not wasting the two-day window learning the basics. MW4 is not out yet — nothing here means the full game is live. The beta is a test build, and the retail game launches October 23, 2026.

Is Warzone in the Modern Warfare 4 beta?

Yes, but only in Weekend 2. The MW4 Beta runs across two weekends, and the two weekends are not the same:

  • Weekend 1 — Early Access (August 21 – 25): Multiplayer and the Campaign mission "Entrenched." No Warzone. Requires a preorder (or an Early Access code).
  • Weekend 2 — Open Beta (August 28 – September 1): Everything from Weekend 1 plus Warzone — the new Resurgence map Zodiac. Open to all players, no preorder required.

CharlieIntel confirmed the reveal directly: "First look at new Warzone Resurgence Map 'Zodiac' — Playable during Weekend 2 of the MW4 Beta" (CharlieIntel). So if your only goal is Zodiac, you can skip the preorder entirely and jump in during the open weekend for free.

This also answers the most common question we're seeing from players ahead of launch: no, you can't try Warzone on day one of the beta (August 21). Warzone is gated to the second weekend on purpose.

When can you play Warzone in the MW4 beta? (Zodiac dates)

Here's the full beta schedule, with the Warzone window highlighted:

WeekendDatesContentWarzone / Zodiac?Access
Weekend 1 — Early AccessAug 21 – 25, 2026Multiplayer + Campaign ("Entrenched")❌ NoPreorder or code required
Weekend 2 — Open BetaAug 28 – Sep 1, 2026MP + Campaign + Warzone (Zodiac)✅ YesFree, open to all

Two hard facts worth burning in: the Warzone/Zodiac window is a four-day block (Aug 28 – Sep 1), and it's the only time you can play Warzone in the beta. Once the open beta ends on September 1, Zodiac goes back offline until Activision brings it into live Warzone — expected around the MW4 launch on October 23, 2026, though a Zodiac live-release date has not been separately confirmed.

Weekend 2 is also the first time Nintendo Switch 2 joins a Warzone beta, alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Battle.net. All of these dates and platforms are confirmed on the official Call of Duty MW4 Beta page. One trap worth naming: Activision opened Switch 2 pre-orders on the same day as beta preload (August 26), and several outlets misread that as "Switch 2 requires a pre-order." It does not — the Open Beta is free on Switch 2 like everywhere else.

What is Zodiac? The new Warzone Resurgence map

Zodiac is a new Warzone Resurgence map making its playable debut in the MW4 Beta. Activision has now given it an official setting — which replaces the guesswork that circulated off the first teaser:

"Call of Duty: Warzone joins the Modern Warfare 4 Beta with Resurgence on Zodiac, an all-new map set around a DRC Advanced Systems drone assembly and manufacturing headquarters." — PlayStation Blog, official MW4 Beta post, August 21, 2026

That is a meaningful detail rather than flavour text. A drone-manufacturing campus means large interior factory floors and warehouse volumes connected by offices and rooftops — geometry that produces long indoor sightlines and heavy vertical play, rather than the open rooftop-to-rooftop duels of Rebirth Island.

Confirmed by Activision:

  • Zodiac is a Resurgence map (not a full battle-royale map).
  • It is set around a DRC Advanced Systems drone assembly and manufacturing HQ.
  • It is playable only in Weekend 2, and it is live for the entire weekend from the 10:00 AM PT Friday start — not a timed sub-window inside it.
  • It is the map anchoring Warzone's first-ever open beta.

Still unconfirmed — and worth knowing which numbers to distrust:

  • Player count. A figure of 44 players is circulating widely, but it traces back to aggregator posts rather than Activision. Treat it as unverified until you are in a lobby.
  • POI names and count. Lists of ten named POIs are being published as fact. They originate from a single low-authority source and appear in no Activision material, so we are deliberately not reprinting them.
  • Squad size. Whether Zodiac runs trios, quads or both has not been announced at all.
  • Exact map size relative to Rebirth Island or Haven's Hollow. Press expectation only.

The honest summary: the setting is now official, the schedule is official, and almost every specific number attached to Zodiac in the last week is not.

If you have played Rebirth Island or Fortune's Keep, that is still the closest mental model: compact, vertical, and built for aggression rather than long-range patience — now with an industrial-interior skew from the drone-factory setting.

A compact Warzone Resurgence map surrounded by water — the tight, vertical layout style expected to be closest to the new Zodiac map

How does Resurgence work on Zodiac?

Resurgence is Warzone's respawn-heavy mode, and it changes how you should play compared to standard battle royale:

  • Get downed and eliminated, and you redeploy automatically after a countdown — you're not out for good on a single death.
  • Your teammates getting kills speeds up your redeploy timer, so an aggressive squad keeps each other in the fight faster.
  • Because respawns are constant, lobbies stay hot from the first drop — expect nonstop third-parties and very little downtime.

The practical takeaway for the beta: play aggressively, prioritize squad regroups, and don't treat it like a slow-loot BR. On a small Resurgence map with a two-day window, the players who adapt fastest to the redeploy loop will dominate. Before queuing, also dial in your Modern Warfare 4 aim assist settings — the beta is a good time to test different types before launch.

How to get into the MW4 beta Warzone weekend

Getting into the Warzone weekend (Weekend 2) is the easy one — it's open to everyone:

  • You do not need a preorder for Warzone. The open beta (Aug 28 – Sep 1) is free and available to all players on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Download the free beta client from your platform's store (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Battle.net/Steam on PC, or the Switch 2 eShop) once it goes live.
  • Preload ahead of time. Activision typically opens preloading roughly 48 hours before servers go up, and a fresh MW4 beta install has been running large — plan for a sizeable download and don't leave it to the last hour. For exact size and unlock-time details, see our MW4 beta preload, file size & unlock times guide.

If you also want the Early Access weekend (Aug 21 – 25, Multiplayer + Campaign, no Warzone), that one does require a preorder or an Early Access code — full breakdown in our MW4 beta early access dates & times guide.

What else is in the MW4 beta? (Multiplayer + Campaign)

Warzone is the headline, but the beta is stacked. On the Multiplayer side, Activision confirmed these maps:

  • Weekend 1: Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, Cachette, and Lotus.
  • Weekend 2: Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, Cachette — with Lithium replacing Lotus.

Confirmed modes include Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy, Inflation, the new Kill Block modes (including 10v10 and 3v3 Gunfight), and a Mobility Course for learning MW4's grounded movement. Weekend 2 also adds Ground War on Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium (with Hijack and Combat Outpost). Full map/mode detail is in our MW4 beta maps, modes & weapons guide, and the new objective mode gets its own breakdown in MW4 Kill Block explained.

The Campaign side gets a single playable mission, "Entrenched," available both weekends — the first time a mainline CoD beta has included a story mission.

Confirmed vs rumored: MW4 beta Warzone

Because leaks fly during beta season, here's the clean split so you don't get burned by a fake "confirmed" claim:

✅ Confirmed (Activision-official):

  • Warzone is in the beta, Weekend 2 only (Aug 28 – Sep 1).
  • The map is a new Resurgence map named Zodiac.
  • It's Warzone's first-ever open beta.
  • Open beta is free, all platforms, including Switch 2.
  • Zodiac is set around a DRC Advanced Systems drone manufacturing HQ.
  • The Beta level cap is 30 in Weekend 2 (it was 20 in Weekend 1), across eight Beta Reward tiers ending in the "Beta Forged" Han 86 blueprint.
  • MW4 launches October 23, 2026.

❓ Not yet confirmed (rumor / expectation):

  • Exact Zodiac map size, POI list, layout, player count and squad size.
  • Whether Warzone/Zodiac has its own separate reward track on top of the shared beta rewards — and, separately, whether Zodiac matches feed the shared Multiplayer Player Level track at all. Neither has been addressed by Activision.
  • A standalone live-release date for Zodiac in retail Warzone (expected around the Oct 23 launch, not separately dated).

If you see any of the "not confirmed" items stated as fact, it's a leak or an assumption — wait for the official beta build.

What level can you reach in the Warzone weekend?

This was an open question when the beta was announced; it is now confirmed. Weekend 2 raises the Player Level cap from 20 to 30, across eight Beta Reward tiers:

Player LevelBeta RewardWeekend
4"Through the Paces" Legendary EmblemOne
8"First Served" Weapon CharmOne
12"Meonjeo" Legendary Weapon StickerOne
16"Last Charge" Legendary Calling CardOne
20"Dread Tiger" Operator Skin – ReeceOne (cap)
23"Field Tested" Epic SprayTwo
26"Beta Rights" Epic Loading ScreenTwo
30"Beta Forged" Weapon Blueprint — Han 86 Assault RifleTwo (cap)

Two things matter here for anyone dropping straight into Zodiac. First, your Player Level carries over from Weekend 1 — Activision states that "any updates and progression will carry over into Weekend Two," so an Early Access player resumes at 20 rather than restarting. What does not carry is XP earned after you already hit the Level 20 ceiling; that is voided. Second, Activision has not confirmed whether Zodiac matches contribute to that Player Level track at all, so if the Level 30 blueprint is your goal, do not assume Warzone time counts toward it. The full ladder and the fastest route to the cap are in our MW4 Beta level cap and rewards guide.

There are also three watch-time Twitch Drops that need no play at all — link your Activision and Twitch accounts for the "Get Tactical" Emblem (15 minutes), "Clearing House" Calling Card (30 minutes) and "Action Ready" Charm (45 minutes).

Ground War: Combat Outpost — the other Weekend 2 headline

Zodiac is not the only large-scale mode arriving on Friday. Weekend 2 also adds Ground War: Combat Outpost, a 24v24 infantry-and-vehicle mode across two maps confirmed by Activision: Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium. Teams capture and reinforce Outposts to create additional spawn locations and unlock escalating support, from local UAV coverage up to armoured vehicles.

Worth planning around: with a four-day window covering Warzone Resurgence, Ground War, six 6v6 maps and a campaign mission, most players will not see everything. If Zodiac is your priority, play it first — Resurgence is the one mode here that has never been in an open beta before.

The build has changed since Weekend 1

If you skipped Early Access, the version you download is not the one people were complaining about. Infinity Ward patched the beta on three consecutive days, and was blunt about why:

"We heard you loud and clear on the footstep volume, so we've adjusted things downward for today. We've been following the conversation and agree that time-to-kill (TTK) isn't quite right yet, so we've tuned down the lethality of some of our guns to start." — Infinity Ward, MW4 Beta patch notes, August 22, 2026

Confirmed Weekend 1 changes included reduced footstep audio volume and range, an Attack Helicopter health cut of 45%, and headshot-multiplier nerfs across the board — M4 from 1.5x to 1.2x, Patriot XMR from 1.42x to 1.22x, Han 86 from 1.4x to 1.25x and Kastov 762 from 1.48x to 1.35x. For Weekend 2, Infinity Ward has said it is adjusting minimum TTK, movement, aim assist and Hardpoint spawns, but has not published the values — so ignore any page quoting exact Weekend 2 aim-assist numbers.

Scale context for Friday: the beta peaked at 115,145 concurrent Steam players on August 21 and fell below 38,000 by the end of Early Access, a decline of over 65% per SteamDB tracking. That is Steam-only and excludes consoles, but it means the Open Beta is opening to a much wider and much greener pool of players — Zodiac lobbies on day one will not play like a Weekend 1 lobby. If you hit launch-day client problems, our MW4 beta not working fixes covers the errors that cost people the most playtime.

MW4 isn't out yet — but you can get Warzone-ready right now. Zodiac drops you into hot Resurgence lobbies with no warm-up, so go in already leveled and comfortable instead of burning the two-day window grinding basics: On PC, dial the rig in first with our MW4 best PC settings for high FPS.

- CoD Bot Lobbies — easy lobbies to warm up your aim and settings before Zodiac goes live.

- CoD Account & Weapon Leveling — skip the grind and jump into Warzone already leveled by pro players.

- CoD Camo Unlocks (BO7) — mastery camos, fast and secure, while you wait for MW4.

- All Call of Duty services — everything in one place.

FAQ

Is Warzone in the MW4 beta? Yes, but only during Weekend 2 (August 28 – September 1, 2026), on the new Resurgence map Zodiac. The Early Access weekend (August 21 – 25) is Multiplayer and the "Entrenched" campaign mission only — no Warzone.

Do I need to preorder to play Warzone in the beta? No. The Warzone weekend is part of the open beta, which is free and available to all players on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2. A preorder is only required for the Early Access weekend, which does not include Warzone anyway.

What is Zodiac in Warzone? Zodiac is a brand-new Warzone Resurgence map debuting in the MW4 beta. Resurgence maps are smaller and faster than full battle-royale maps, with automatic redeploys after you're downed. Its exact size and layout haven't been officially detailed yet.

Can I play Warzone Zodiac on Nintendo Switch 2? Yes. Weekend 2 (the open beta) is the first time Switch 2 is included in a Warzone beta, alongside PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. No pre-order is needed, and preload opened August 26 on Switch 2 at the same time as every other platform.

When does Zodiac come to the full Warzone? Activision hasn't given Zodiac a separate live-release date. It's expected to arrive in retail Warzone around the MW4 launch on October 23, 2026, but that's not officially confirmed.

What time does Zodiac go live, and is it available all weekend? Zodiac unlocks with the Open Beta at 10:00 AM PT on Friday, August 28 (1:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM BST / 7:00 PM CEST) and stays playable for the full window until 10:00 AM PT on Tuesday, September 1. It is not restricted to a sub-window inside the weekend. Note the Open Beta starts an hour earlier than Weekend 1 did — Early Access opened at 11:00 AM PT.

How big is the Warzone beta download, and do I need to redownload if I played Weekend 1? No redownload. The beta is a single client for both weekends — Activision states you "only need to install the Beta once" — so Weekend 1 players get an update rather than a fresh install. Preload opened at 9:00 AM PT on Wednesday, August 26. Activision has not published a per-platform download size; budget 40–70 GB of free SSD space, and note MW4 requires an SSD and will not run from a mechanical hard drive. Full details in our MW4 beta preload and file size guide.

Is the MW4 beta the full game? No. The beta is a limited test build available across two weekends in late August 2026. The full Modern Warfare 4 releases globally on October 23, 2026.
