Quick answer
The Dirk Nowitzki GOAT Build in NBA 2K27 unlocks at Level 33 of the free Season 2 rewards track. You don't need the Pro Pass, REP or Lifetime Challenges. He's a 7'1" power forward, 245 lbs, with a 7'4" wingspan, modelled on the 2002-03 Dallas Mavericks version of Dirk. He is the best jump shooter of all 18 GOAT Builds: 99 Mid-Range, 96 Three-Point, 95 Free Throw, 99 Close Shot and 99 Post Control, a shooting average of 96.7, first of 18. The cost is movement. Speed With Ball, Agility and Perimeter Defense are all 45 and Speed is 60, which makes him the slowest build in the group on the perimeter. At 99 OVR with no Cap Breakers he reaches 35 badges, 11 of them Hall of Fame, by NBA2KLab's count. Season 2 ends when Season 3 starts on November 27, 2026, so you have about three weeks to reach Level 33. Everything here applies to Season 2 on Update 2.0 and was checked on November 5, 2026.
How do you unlock the Dirk Nowitzki GOAT Build?
Dirk is one of the three GOAT Builds on the Season 2 rewards track: Magic Johnson at Level 26, Dirk at Level 33 and Young Kobe at Level 37. Eight other GOAT Builds were available from day one, five come from REP and two from Lifetime Challenges (NBA2KLab GOAT Builds database, citing 2K's Season 2 Courtside Report).
2K confirmed the unlock in its Season 2 announcement: the track's rewards "include a 4-Person Golf Cart at Level 18, 'Boomer' - Indiana Pacers Mascot at Level 20, Dirk Nowitzki GOAT Build at Level 33, Clown Costume: Ankle Taker at Level 39, and more" (2K Newsroom, October 14, 2026).
- Play anything that earns Season XP until your Season 2 level hits 33. It's the free track, so the Pro Pass is not required.
- Claim the Level 33 reward. Level 31 on the same track is a Bonus Badge Slot, and Level 36 is a Bonus Badge Token.
- Open the MyPLAYER Builder, choose the GOAT Builds path and pick Dirk Nowitzki (PF).
- Set Badges, Cap Breakers and Takeovers as you would on any build, then spend VC to raise him to 99 OVR.
Because the three track GOATs share one Season XP bar, reaching Dirk also unlocks the Magic Johnson GOAT Build on the way. If you're short on levels, our Season 2 level-up guide covers the fastest XP sources.
The deadline. 2K's seasons calendar runs Season 3 from November 27, 2026 to January 15, 2027. 2K hasn't said whether Season 2 track rewards can still be claimed after Season 3 starts, so treat November 26 as your last safe day to reach Level 33. Full dates are in our Season 3 release date guide.
What are the Dirk Nowitzki GOAT Build's attributes?
2K says GOAT Builds "exceed the standard physical and attribute caps of the MyPLAYER Builder" and that "the animations and stats are locked to preserve each player's authentic feel, while keeping full access to Badges, Cap Breakers, and more" (2K Newsroom, October 14, 2026). The ratings below are Dirk's fixed 99 OVR numbers from NBA2KLab. They match the goatbuilds.wiki Dirk page, both checked November 5. The right column is his ceiling with every Cap Breaker slot filled.
| Attribute | Base (99 OVR) | Max with Cap Breakers |
|---|---|---|
| Close Shot | 99 | 99 (no slots) |
| Driving Layup | 85 | 85 (no slots) |
| Driving Dunk | 55 | 77 |
| Standing Dunk | 70 | 75 |
| Post Control | 99 | 99 (no slots) |
| Mid-Range Shot | 99 | 99 (no slots) |
| Three-Point Shot | 96 | 96 (no slots) |
| Free Throw | 95 | 95 (no slots) |
| Pass Accuracy | 80 | 87 |
| Ball Handle | 60 | 66 |
| Speed With Ball | 45 | 53 |
| Interior Defense | 82 | 87 |
| Perimeter Defense | 45 | 64 |
| Steal | 65 | 65 (no slots) |
| Block | 80 | 85 |
| Offensive Rebound | 83 | 88 |
| Defensive Rebound | 92 | 97 |
| Speed | 60 | 64 |
| Agility | 45 | 52 |
| Strength | 83 | 88 |
| Vertical | 72 | 79 |
NBA2KLab's builder card describes him as "Unmatchable shooting gravity. Backs down defenders, operates out of triple-threat, and pulls up over any contest." The builder names the build simply "Dirk".
Three numbers explain the build:
- Shooting average 96.7, first of 18. That's Mid-Range, Three and Free Throw together, ahead of Ray Allen (95.3) and Klay Thompson (93.0). His 99 Mid-Range and 95 Free Throw are both the highest of any GOAT Build. Only Ray Allen and Klay have a higher three (99).
- 92 Defensive Rebound, with a Rebounding average of 87.5, fourth of 18. He isn't only a floor spacer; he can finish the possession too.
- 45 Speed With Ball, 45 Agility, 45 Perimeter Defense. His 45 Agility is the lowest of all 18, and only Wilt (25 Speed With Ball) and Dwight Howard (40 Perimeter Defense) rate lower in the other two. His overall average of 75.7 ranks 12th of 18 because his mobility is so low, not because the offense is weak.
The chart shows how lopsided he is. Dirk's mobility average (Speed, Agility, Speed With Ball and Perimeter Defense) is 48.8, the lowest of all 18, below even Wilt Chamberlain (52.5). No other build has a gap that big between how well it shoots and how well it moves.
Can a custom 7'1" build do this?
No, and that's the reason to grind for him. A normal 7'1" build is capped at 86 Mid-Range, 84 Three-Point and 91 Free Throw. Those are the cap values NBA2KLab lists next to Dirk's ratings. Dirk sits 13, 12 and 4 points above those caps before you spend a single Cap Breaker. You get a seven-footer who shoots like a guard, and you can't change his body or animations later.
What badges does the Dirk Nowitzki GOAT Build get?
At 99 OVR with no Cap Breakers, NBA2KLab counts 35 badges: 11 Hall of Fame, 3 Gold, 15 Silver and 6 Bronze. goatbuilds.wiki counts 34 with 10 Hall of Fame. The only difference is Smooth Operator, which NBA2KLab lists at Hall of Fame and goatbuilds.wiki leaves off. 2K hasn't published GOAT Build badge tiers, so both are community calculations from the badge requirements.
| Category | Hall of Fame | Gold | Silver / Bronze |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finishing (9) | Float Game, Ghost Stepper, Hook Specialist, Paint Prodigy, Post Spin Catalyst | none | Aerial Wizard, Physical Finisher, Post Powerhouse (S); Rise Up (B) |
| Shooting (7) | Deadeye, Post Fade Phenom, Quick Trigger, Smooth Operator, Static Middy | Limitless Range, Set and Fire | none |
| Playmaking (4) | none | Unpluckable | Break Starter, Dimer, Versatile Visionary (S) |
| Defense (6) | none | none | Off-Ball Pest, Post Lockdown (S); High-Flying Denier, Interceptor, Paint Patroller, Wall Up (B) |
| Rebounding (5) | Sync Snatcher | none | Boxout Boss, Breaker, Crasher, Possession Closer (S) |
| Physicals (4) | none | none | Brick Wall, Pogo Stick, Work Horse (S); Bruiser (B) |
His 11 Hall of Fame badges (NBA2KLab) are the most of any GOAT Build, one more than Magic Johnson's 10. They're mostly post, shooting and close-range finishing badges, plus Sync Snatcher on the glass. Playmaking stops at Gold and defense at Silver, so the badges tell you the same thing as the ratings: he scores and rebounds, and he doesn't guard the perimeter or run the offense.
Where should you put Cap Breakers on the Dirk GOAT Build?
Seven of his ratings take no Cap Breakers at all: Close Shot, Driving Layup, Post Control, Mid-Range, Three, Free Throw and Steal. All of his shooting is already maxed, so every Cap Breaker goes to the weak parts of the card. He has 52 Cap Breaker steps in total.
The raw-points order (biggest gain per Cap Breaker first):
- Perimeter Defense: +10, then +8 (45 to 63, max 64 with a third for +1). The biggest single gain on the card, and it fixes his worst problem in switches.
- Speed With Ball: +8 (45 to 53, one slot only).
- Agility: +7 (45 to 52, one slot only).
- Driving Dunk: +6, +5, +4, +4, +3 (55 to 77). Big numbers, but most Dirk players aren't dunking in traffic.
- Ball Handle: +4, +2 (60 to 66). Speed: +4 (60 to 64).
The badge-driven order is what some players in this week's threads use instead. The inside ratings move +1 per step (Block, Defensive Rebound, Interior Defense, Offensive Rebound, Strength, Standing Dunk), so you spend there only to cross a badge tier. One player planned to Cap Break Defensive Rebound up to 95 first and then planned to push Block from 80 toward the mid-80s for Paint Patroller. Another used a Cap Breaker on Vertical to reach 74 for High-Flying Denier. Check exact thresholds in our attribute breakpoints guide before spending, because a Cap Breaker that doesn't cross a tier is wasted.
Our recommendation for most players: two into Perimeter Defense (+18), one into Agility (+7) and one into Speed With Ball (+8). That's 4 Cap Breakers for +33 rating points, and it makes Dirk playable on switches. After that, spend for the badge tier you want on the glass or at the rim. For how many Cap Breakers you can earn this season, see where to put Cap Breakers.
Does the Dirk GOAT Build use Dirk Nowitzki's jump shot?
Yes. His jump shot base and both upper releases are Dirk Nowitzki's own, with a Quick release speed, according to NBA2KLab and goatbuilds.wiki. The free throw, dribble pull-up, spin jumper and hop jumper are Dirk's too, and so are his post fade, post hop shot and post go-to shot. His go-to shot is Deandre Ayton's, his post hook is Isaiah Hartenstein's, and his motion style is Mike Muscala's. Dribble moves are all Normal with a Basic dribble style. Animations are locked on every GOAT Build, so you can't swap any of these.
In the thread that started this week's debate, one player wrote that the shot is "v easy to time even through contests". Our read is that the Quick release speed helps there. Not everyone agrees. Another reply said "the jumper is slow and most of the animations are too", and a third said that unless you use the Quick Trigger badge, they "wouldn't recommend it especially if you're a casual." If you've never shot well on fast releases, try a Quick jumper on a custom build first. Our best jumpshot after Update 2.0 guide covers timing.
Dirk vs Anthony Davis, Hakeem, Wilt and Dwight: which big GOAT Build?
| GOAT Build | Height / wingspan | Mid / Three | Post Control | Block / Interior D | Speed | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dirk Nowitzki (PF) | 7'1" / 7'4" | 99 / 96 | 99 | 80 / 82 | 60 | Season 2 Level 33 |
| Anthony Davis (PF) | 6'10" / 7'2" | 75 / 70 | 87 | 94 / 93 | 78 | Day one |
| Hakeem Olajuwon (C) | 7'0" / 7'3" | 91 / 40 | 99 | 95 / 99 | 65 | REP Elite V |
| Wilt Chamberlain (C) | 7'1" / 8'0" | 70 / 25 | 95 | 94 / 90 | 70 | 350 Lifetime Challenges |
| Dwight Howard (C) | 6'11" / 7'5" | 25 / 25 | 85 | 94 / 94 | 80 | Day one |
Dirk vs Anthony Davis is the real choice, since they're the only two GOAT power forwards. They're opposites. AD protects the rim (94 Block, 93 Interior Defense, 95 Standing Dunk) and costs nothing; Dirk spaces the floor (99 Mid vs 75, 96 Three vs 70) and costs 33 Season levels. Pick AD if your squad needs a defender; pick Dirk if it needs a big who can shoot.
Dirk vs the centers. Hakeem is the better post defender and still has a 91 mid-range, but a 40 three. Wilt and Dwight are rim-and-glass builds with no jumper at all. Dirk is the only big you can leave at the three-point line. All five are compared side by side in our best big man GOAT Build guide.
Is the Dirk Nowitzki GOAT Build worth it?
Yes, if you play random games in The REC or the Park as a stretch big who scores. Nobody else can give you a 7'1" player with a 99 mid-range, a 96 three, a Quick release and 11 Hall of Fame badges. A guard can't contest that shot, and a big usually can't follow him out to the arc. One r/NBA2k player who built him summed it up: "Wide open I'm automatic, and I take a lot of shots off the dribble that I've never been confident in taking before."
Probably not if you play organised 5v5 (Crew HQ or Proving Grounds) against good squads, or if you have to guard the pick-and-roll. The first reply in the same thread called him "a meme build that will do good against random players but its unusable in a comp setting." With 45 Perimeter Defense, 45 Agility and only 64 and 52 even after Cap Breakers, he gets punished every time a guard switches onto him. One player who runs him in 5v5 said it goes better when he plays center and doesn't have to guard the pick-and-roll.
It also isn't a post-only build. Some players call Dirk a post scorer, but most of his value comes from the jumper. The post fades and 99 Post Control are a bonus on top of that. If you mainly want a back-to-the-basket big, Hakeem fits better.
If you're anywhere near Level 33, finish the grind before November 27, 2026. You get Magic on the way and a Cap Breaker at Level 40. For all 18 builds and how each one unlocks, see the NBA 2K27 GOAT Builds guide.
