Breach got torn down and rebuilt in Patch 0.5.0 "Return of the Ancients", and it is now one of the best currency engines in the Runes of Aldur league — if you understand the new pipeline. The old "stand in the circle, kill stuff, grab a Breachstone" loop is gone. In its place is a multi-step system: Breach Splinters feed a Wombgift, the Wombgift becomes a Breachstone at the Genesis Tree, and that Breachstone unlocks a whole new tier of endgame — the Hive Fortress, a boss-fortified maze that drops the Hiveblood and wombgifts you craft currency and gear from.
It's powerful. It's also confusing enough that one of the most upvoted PSAs on r/PathOfExile2 right now is players who literally couldn't find their Breach stronghold for days. This guide fixes that. You'll get: how the new Breach loop works end-to-end, exactly how to make a Breachstone (and the one-line gotcha that stumps everyone), how to clear the Hive Fortress and keep Ailith alive, what Breach actually drops, the fastest way to farm it for currency, and the live bug you should know about before you sink an evening into it. Every mechanic here is checked against the official Path of Exile 2 wiki and current patch notes — not a stale tracker.
PoE2 Breach in 30 seconds (the quick answer)
- What it is: an Atlas endgame mechanic. Clearing a Breach spawns waves of Hiveborn that drop Breach Splinters.
- The new key item: stack Splinters into a Wombgift, then turn that Wombgift in at the Genesis Tree to craft a Breachstone.
- The #1 mistake: the Breachstone must be in your inventory for the Breach stronghold to appear (and be pinpointable) on your Atlas. No Breachstone in bags = no stronghold. This trips up almost everyone.
- The endgame: a Breachstone opens Breach Domains — tiered content that escalates Breach Hive → Sky Hive → Hive Fortress.
- The payoff: Hiveblood + wombgifts, spent at the Genesis Tree to craft targeted jewellery, currency, and Breach base items — that's the commercial loop.
- Bosses: Breachlords Tul & Esh, the rare Vruun, Marshal of Xesht, and the pinnacle Xesht, We That Are One.
How does Breach work in PoE2 now?
Breach is one of the league mechanics you weight on the Atlas passive tree so it shows up more often in your maps. When a Breach appears, you click the hand, and an expanding ring releases a swarm of Hiveborn. Kill them fast (Breaches are on a timer that the ring's expansion represents) and they drop Breach Splinters plus Breach-specific loot.
That much is familiar. What changed in 0.5.0 is everything after the splinters:
- Collect Breach Splinters from clearing Breaches in maps.
- Convert a full stack into a Wombgift. Splinters auto-convert when the stack tops out (game8 documents this as a Revelatory Wombgift).
- Craft a Breachstone at the Genesis Tree by turning in that Wombgift.
- Carry the Breachstone and it reveals a Breach Domain / stronghold on your Atlas to run for the big rewards.
So the Breachstone is no longer something you just stumble on — it's a crafted key, and it's the gateway to the part of Breach that's actually worth farming. (How currency feeds the rest of your build →.)
How do you make a Breachstone in PoE2?
Here's the full sequence, including the bit that breaks people:
- Farm Splinters. Run maps with Breach weighted on the Atlas tree until you've got a large stack.
- Trigger the Wombgift conversion. This is the gotcha: when your splinters reach a full stack, they convert into a Wombgift — but if the stack looks "stuck," split one splinter off the stack and merge it back in to force the conversion. (This exact trick is the top answer in the community PSA threads.)
- Go to the Genesis Tree and turn the Wombgift in to craft your Breachstone.
- Keep the Breachstone in your inventory. Then open your Atlas — the Breach stronghold will appear, and you can right-click the Breachstone to pinpoint its location. Without it in your bags, the stronghold simply won't show. This is the most common "Breach is broken" complaint, and it's almost always this.

What is the Hive Fortress?
A Breachstone unlocks Breach Domains with three escalating tiers of content. The top tier — and the one you're farming for — is the Hive Fortress: a maze-like arena "in the sky" packed with Hiveborn, where the real Hiveblood comes from.
| Breach domain tier | What it is | Reward weight |
|---|---|---|
| Breach Hive | The entry encounter — a single Hive arena | Low–medium |
| Sky Hive | A bigger, harder Hive | Medium |
| Hive Fortress | Floating maze + boss-tier central encounter | Highest |
Per the official wiki, a Hive Fortress is built from two ring-like hallways and a central clearing, connected by passages — some of which are blocked by hands emerging from the walls. The rings hold Hiveborn (kill them to increase your Hiveblood payout) and "Grasping Coffer" chests that can hold wombgifts and Foulborn unique items.

Keeping Ailith alive (the central encounter)
In the centre, you start a Hive encounter that runs 24 waves. The NPC Ailith channels while you fight, and she has a 20-segment health bar — similar to Blight. When Hiveborn hit her, that bar drops; if it empties before you finish the final wave, the encounter fails. She gets a brief invulnerability window after each hit (longer the bigger the hit), and enemies generally prefer attacking you over her, so body-blocking and clearing fast both protect her.
Your key tool: purple flames spawn near Ailith every 4–5 waves (up to 6 can be active at once). Interact with them for powerful temporary effects — the wiki's own advice is to use them liberally. Greeding them is a mistake; an unused flame is wasted defence.
The escape phase (don't die here)
This is the part Reddit calls "the puzzle," and it's real. Once you complete the waves, the central Breach hand starts pulsing, dealing significant physical damage across the whole arena on intervals (it scales with map mods and can be mitigated/blocked). Hands have also sealed off several corridors. You must navigate out of the Fortress to collect your rewards — so plan your exit route during the waves. Die during the waves or the escape and you fail: no Hiveblood, no wombgifts, and you can't re-enter.
What does Breach drop — and why farm it?
The Hive Fortress is a currency loop, not just a fight. Successfully escaping rewards a large amount of Hiveblood (far more than a plain Breach Hive), several wombgifts, sometimes a Hivebrain Gland, and on your first-ever Hive Fortress clear, a Spiked Limb.
The in-game flavour sets the tone — the Hivebrain Gland reads:
"Countless voices murmur, singing of the Hive..." — Hivebrain Gland, in-game item description (Path of Exile 2)
Here's why exiles grind it:
- Hiveblood is the fuel for the Genesis Tree, where you craft targeted jewellery, currency, and Breach base items. That's a controllable currency faucet, which is rare and valuable.
- Wombgifts turn into more Breachstones (sustaining your farm) and feed Genesis Tree crafts.
- Foulborn unique items from Grasping Coffers can be high-value chase drops.
In trade terms, the orbs you ultimately want out of this — Divine Orbs (the top trade currency; they reroll a rare's modifier values) and Exalted Orbs (add a modifier; a crafting and trade staple) — are what fund your build. Exchange rates move every league, so check poe.ninja for live values rather than any secondary tracker. If you'd rather buy the orbs outright than grind for them, that's exactly what PoE2 currency is for.
Best way to farm Breach for currency
A few high-leverage tips to make Breach a real currency engine:
- Weight Breach on the Atlas tree. Spec the Breach notables/keystones so Breaches appear more often and richer; passives like Local Knowledge help you sustain Breachstones.
- Use Breach Scarabs. A Breach Scarab of the Marshal guarantees a Breach Hive becomes a Hive Fortress (the high-reward tier) — that's how you reliably farm the good content instead of hoping. A Breach Scarab of the Incensed Swarm enrages Ailith's encounter: higher difficulty, higher reward on later waves. Use it once your build can handle the wave pressure.
- Clear the rings before you finish the centre. Every Hiveborn you kill in the outer rings raises your Hiveblood payout — don't rush straight to the middle and leave loot on the table.
- Loot the Grasping Coffers. They're easy to miss near the wall blockages, and they're where wombgifts and Foulborn uniques hide.
- Build for the escape. Physical mitigation and movement speed matter as much as DPS here; the escape phase kills more farmers than the waves do.
If your gear isn't there yet, the bottleneck is usually currency for upgrades — see our PoE2 currency farming guide and Atlas guide for the wider endgame routing.
Breach bosses: Tul, Esh, Vruun & Xesht
Breach in 0.5.0 has a proper boss ladder:
- Tul & Esh — Breachlords you'll encounter as part of the reworked mechanic.
- Vruun, Marshal of Xesht — a rare mini-boss in Breach content who drops wombgifts; a lucky spawn worth killing every time.
- Xesht, We That Are One — the pinnacle Breach boss, the top of the ladder and a serious gear/skill check.
These pinnacle fights are where a lot of players hit a wall — the build that farms maps comfortably can still get one-shot by Xesht. If a boss is gatekeeping your progress (or your loot), a PoE2 boss carry gets a pro to clear it on your account, fast and safe.
Heads up: the Hive Fortress bug (June 2026)
Worth knowing before you commit an evening: the Breach Hive / Hive Fortress content has had a genuine can't-progress / crash bug this league — colony monsters getting stuck or failing to path, and reports of "completed" Hive content that won't actually let you continue. This is not you doing something wrong.
GGG has acknowledged it and is shipping fixes: the official "What We Are Working On — Part 2" communication and the 0.5.1 patch notes preview both list endgame-progression and Breach/Hive fixes among the priorities. If you hit a stuck Hive, check whether 0.5.1 has landed before assuming your build or setup is the problem.
Player FAQ (straight from r/PathOfExile2)
"I can't find my Breach stronghold on the Atlas — is it bugged?" Usually not. The Breachstone has to be in your inventory for the stronghold to appear, and you can right-click it to pinpoint the location. Players have lost days to this. Check your bags first.
"How do I actually combine my splinters into a Breachstone?" Stack Breach Splinters until they convert to a Wombgift (if it looks stuck, split one off the stack and merge it back to trigger it), then turn the Wombgift in at the Genesis Tree to craft the Breachstone.
"How rare are the special Breach uniques / invitations?" The rare chase drops (e.g. Foulborn uniques and special invitations) are genuinely uncommon — many players report seeing them only once or twice, and a chunk of the community simply buys them on trade for a handful of Exalted Orbs rather than farming for them. Check poe.ninja for the going rate before you grind.
"Is Breach worth farming for currency, or should I do something else?" It's one of the stronger currency mechanics this league because of the Genesis Tree — you get to craft toward what you actually want instead of praying for drops. The catch is the gear check on the Hive Fortress escape and bosses. If your build can survive it, farm it.
Skip the grind — Breach the easy way
Breach in 0.5.0 is a great currency engine, but it's also a gear-check wall: the Hive Fortress escape, Xesht, and the Breachlords all punish under-geared builds, and the splinter-to-Breachstone grind eats hours. If you'd rather play than farm:
- PoE2 Currency — Divine, Exalted & Chaos — fund your build directly · instant delivery · best rate. The fastest path to the gear that makes the Hive Fortress trivial.
- PoE2 Divine Orbs and PoE2 Exalted Orbs — the orbs you'd grind Breach for, delivered now.
- PoE2 Boss & Endgame Carries — let a pro clear Xesht, the Breachlords, or a stuck Hive Fortress on your account · account-safe.
- PoE2 Leveling Boost — get to maps and the Atlas where Breach farming even starts.
Bottom line
The 0.5.0 Breach rework turned a simple circle-clear into a real loot engine: Splinters → Wombgift → Breachstone (at the Genesis Tree) → Breach Domains → Hive Fortress → Hiveblood & wombgifts → Genesis Tree crafting. Get the basics right — keep the Breachstone in your inventory, weight Breach on the Atlas, use a Scarab of the Marshal to guarantee Hive Fortresses, clear the rings for more Hiveblood, and plan your escape route — and Breach becomes one of the most reliable currency farms in Runes of Aldur. Just mind the live Hive bug, and don't be afraid to buy your way past the gear wall if the grind isn't worth your night.
