DBD Academia Rift: Release Date, Full Roster and How the Rift Pass Works

Official Dead by Daylight October of Horror card announcing the Academia Rift for October 6, with Claudette Morel, Vee Boonyasak and Renato Lyra on the VHS cover

Most pages about the next Dead by Daylight Rift are guessing. Behaviour Interactive is not — it put the date on screen, in its own trailer, in big VHS-rental letters. The Academia Rift has a confirmed launch date, a confirmed six-character roster, and it arrives the same day the current Rift stops accepting progress. If you have unspent tiers in Sunflesh, the clock on them is measured in hours, not weeks.

Here is everything Behaviour has actually published, plus the part almost nobody explains properly: what the Rift Pass costs, what it gives back, and when buying it late is still the correct move.

This article applies to Dead by Daylight on live build 10.1.2a and the October 2026 content calendar. The 10.2.0 build is still Public Test Build only and has no announced live date, so nothing below depends on it.

Quick answer

  • The Academia Rift launches on 6 October 2026, per the date card in Behaviour's own October of Horror trailer.
  • Roster: The Clown, The Huntress, Claudette Morel, Renato Lyra, Thalita Lyra and Vee Boonyasak. The VHS cover art headlines Claudette, Vee and Renato.
  • The Sunflesh Rift closes the same day. Once a Rift closes its Challenges are gone for good, so spend and finish before the swap.
  • The Rift Pass costs 1,000 Auric Cells. Individual tiers cost 100 Auric Cells each, and there is a bundle priced at 2,000 Auric Cells that Behaviour describes as 3,000 Auric Cells' worth of content.
  • Buying the Pass late is not a penalty. Premium rewards for tiers you already cleared on the Free Track unlock retroactively the moment you buy in.
  • There is a Free Track and a Premium Track; the Free Track runs whether you pay or not.

When does the Academia Rift start in Dead by Daylight?

6 October 2026.

That date is not a leak or a community spreadsheet. Behaviour published a trailer titled "Dead by Daylight — October of Horror New Releases" on its official YouTube channel on 1 October 2026, and the trailer runs a VHS-store "NEW RELEASE" card for each item on the October calendar. The Academia Rift card reads, in plain text, OCTOBER 6. The same card shows the in-fiction cover art with three names printed along the bottom: CLAUDETTE MOREL, VEE BOONYASAK, RENATO LYRA.

The official description for that video is equally direct: "Get schooled on a new genre of horror with the Academia Rift."

This matters because Rift transitions are the one part of the Dead by Daylight calendar that routinely gets reported wrong. Rift cycles do not run on neat month boundaries, and third-party trackers tend to recycle last year's window. As of 5 October 2026 the official Rift page on deadbydaylight.com still lists Sunflesh as the Current Rift — which is exactly what you would expect on the day before a swap, and a useful live check anyone can repeat.

Who is actually in the Academia Rift?

The trailer's lower-third roster card lists six characters:

  • The Clown
  • The Huntress
  • Claudette Morel
  • Renato Lyra
  • Thalita Lyra
  • Vee Boonyasak

Two Killers, four Survivors. The cover art headlines Claudette, Vee and Renato, with Thalita and the Killers filling out the rest of the track — the standard shape for a modern Rift, where a few characters carry the marquee outfits and the rest get supporting cosmetics.

The theme is a dark-academia boarding-school horror pastiche: candlelit library stacks, prefect blazers, a Clown redesigned as a tweed-jacketed faculty nightmare with pink hair and round spectacles.

Academia Rift roster

Behaviour has not published a Rift number for Academia, and no official page names a matching Tome. Rift numbering gets derived incorrectly all over the place — if you see a confident "Rift Pass 7" somewhere, treat it as an assumption, not a source.

What happens to the Sunflesh Rift when it closes?

Sunflesh has been the Current Rift since 21 July 2026. Its official announcement confirmed Ascended Outfits for Taurie Cain and The Wraith, and in Behaviour's own wording, "Sunflesh features unlockable Outfits for Zarina Kassir, Kate Denson, Orela Rose, and The Plague."

The important part is what closing means mechanically. From the official Rift FAQ:

"Once a Rift closes, the Challenges will no longer be available. However, a new Rift will arrive shortly afterward, providing a new wave of Challenges to complete."

So Challenges do not roll over. Neither does unclaimed track progress in any practical sense — the cosmetics on a closed Rift's track leave with it. If you are sitting on Rift Fragments, unspent tiers, or a nearly finished Weekly, the time to burn them is before the swap, not after. The same applies to anything you were saving Auric Cells for on that track.

If you want to check what you actually have before you commit, the two numbers worth knowing are your Rift Fragment count and your Bloodpoint balance — and Bloodpoints have their own hard ceiling that catches people out mid-event. We broke that down in our guide to the real Bloodpoint cap and how to farm it fast.

How does the Rift Pass actually work?

The Rift is split into a Free Track and a Premium Track. In Behaviour's description, the Rift "contains a Free Track and Premium Track, which offer plenty to earn for Killer and Survivors." You progress both by earning Rift Fragments; the Premium Track only pays out if you have unlocked the Rift Pass.

The official FAQ on how to unlock it is worth quoting in full, because the pricing detail is buried:

"Click on The Rift tab. Click the 'UNLOCK PASS' button below the Premium rewards. The Rift Pass can then be unlocked with 1,000 Auric Cells. After unlocking the Rift Pass, the same button can be used to unlock Tiers with 100 Auric Cells each. There is also a bundle that offers significant value (2000 Auric Cells for 3000 Auric Cell's worth of content)."

Three numbers to hold onto: 1,000 Auric Cells for the Pass, 100 Auric Cells per individual tier, and a 2,000-Auric-Cell bundle that Behaviour values at 3,000 Auric Cells of content.

And the single most useful rule in the entire system, which answers the most common question about buying in late:

"Rewards for previously completed Tiers will be earned upon unlocking the Rift Pass. For example, if you've progressed to Tier 10 in The Rift and unlock the Rift Pass, you will instantly earn all Premium rewards up to that point."

In other words, there is no penalty for waiting. Play the Free Track, see whether the cosmetics are worth it to you, and buy the Pass in week eight if you decide they are — you get everything you already earned, immediately. Anyone telling you to buy on day one to "not miss rewards" has the mechanic backwards.

What do you have to do to climb the Rift?

Quests. The Archives became The Rift in a system overhaul Behaviour announced on 1 May 2025, after what the studio counted as 22 Tomes of content since 2019. That rework replaced the old Level-gated Challenge system outright.

Under the old system, in Behaviour's words, "Previously, each Tome would feature four Levels of unique Challenges, which earn you Rift Fragments and Bloodpoints." Now every Quest is active at once — no pre-selecting a single Challenge, no waiting for a Level to unlock.

Rift quest screen

The Quests screen Behaviour published splits the work into separate tracks, each with its own timer and counter — a Rift Pass quest track, a Milestone track, a Daily track that refreshes on a few-hour timer, and an event track when one is live. The Rift Pass track in that screenshot carries 50 quests, Milestones sit at 7, and Dailies run 3 at a time. Individual quests in the shot pay out 30,000 Bloodpoints plus Rift Fragments each, and you can pin one to track it in-match.

Two structural rules from the official FAQ are worth memorising:

  • "New Challenges will release Daily, and each Rift will bring 12 weeks' worth of Rift Challenges to complete. Milestone Quests will remain active for the duration of a Rift Cycle. There are also 4 unique rewards to earn by completing a number of Challenges throughout the duration of a Rift Cycle."
  • Weekly Challenges "can be retroactively completed at any point before the cycle concludes."

That second line is the one that saves Rifts. Missing week three does not cost you week three — you can go back and clear it any time before the cycle ends. The only hard deadline is the Rift's own closing date.

Milestone Quests are the long-haul objectives, escalating as you complete them. Behaviour's own example: "Hook 5 Survivors" becoming "Hook 10 Survivors."

What players are saying about the Academia Rift

The community reaction has been less about the outfits and more about who got left out. The most-upvoted observation on the subreddit's Rift roundup thread was about a missing teacher: "I'm surprised Adam isn't one of the main characters in Academia Rift, guy was a teacher after all."

A second player extended the point to the theme itself: "The fact that the few characters associated with magic and spells aren't included either is the wildest thing about next rift for me."

There is also a recurring frustration about rotation fairness. One long-running complaint is that popular Survivors go years without Rift representation — "what surprises me is that Kate are never in a rift. She is a popular character and I see her just as often as Claudette, Nea etc." Sunflesh actually addressed that one; Kate is on the current track.

And a sharp read on how Behaviour builds these rosters: "They caught up with Taurie skins this year and featured her in Sunflesh (as she deserved imo), and now Vee is going the same way." That is the pattern worth watching — a character gets a run of cosmetics across a year, then headlines a Rift.

What else is coming in October?

The Academia Rift is the second item on the October calendar Behaviour laid out in that same trailer:

  • Hallowed Blight Collection — released 1 October, headlined by Jason.
  • Academia Rift — 6 October.
  • Haunted by Daylight event — 13 October, featuring The Hillbilly and Shane.
  • Diablo Collection — roster confirmed as The Artist, The Dredge, The Nurse, David, Taurie and Zarina. No date on screen.
  • November Days Collection — Ghost Face confirmed, no date on screen.
  • Stranger Things Collection — returning, no date on screen.

Haunted by Daylight October 13

The 13 October date for Haunted by Daylight is worth flagging, because trackers have spent weeks recycling a 2023 calendar for this year's Halloween window. Behaviour's trailer is first-party and unambiguous. We keep a running record of what is and is not confirmed in our Dead by Daylight Halloween event 2026 breakdown, and the overlapping drop campaign in Twitch Drops October 2026.

For the Diablo Collection and November Days, Behaviour has shown rosters and nothing else. Any date you see attached to either one right now is somebody's guess.

Should you buy the Academia Rift Pass?

A straight read of the numbers:

  • If you play more than a few matches a week, you will clear enough of a 12-week Rift to make 1,000 Auric Cells reasonable value — the Pass track is designed around casual-but-regular play, and the retroactive unlock means you can decide after you have seen your own pace.
  • If you play sporadically, do not buy on day one. Run the Free Track, check your tier count at the halfway mark, and buy only if you are tracking to finish. You lose nothing by waiting.
  • If you only want one specific outfit, 1,000 Auric Cells for a single skin is a bad trade.

The strongest argument for the Pass is the stacked currency: you are not only buying cosmetics but a long drip of Bloodpoints alongside them, and Bloodpoints are the actual bottleneck on unlocking perks across your roster. If that economy is what is holding you back, the Shrine of Secrets rotation is the other lever worth pulling in the same week.

FAQ

When does the Academia Rift release in Dead by Daylight? 6 October 2026. The date appears on the official "NEW RELEASE" card in Behaviour Interactive's October of Horror trailer, published 1 October 2026.

Who is in the Academia Rift? The Clown, The Huntress, Claudette Morel, Renato Lyra, Thalita Lyra and Vee Boonyasak. Claudette, Vee and Renato are headlined on the cover art.

How much does the Rift Pass cost? 1,000 Auric Cells for the Pass itself. Individual tiers are 100 Auric Cells each after that, and there is a bundle at 2,000 Auric Cells that Behaviour describes as 3,000 Auric Cells' worth of content.

If I buy the Rift Pass late, do I lose the earlier rewards? No. Behaviour's official FAQ states that Premium rewards for tiers you have already completed are earned instantly when you unlock the Pass.

What happens to my Sunflesh Rift progress? Challenges from a closed Rift are no longer available, and its track leaves with it. Finish what you can and spend Rift Fragments before 6 October.

How long does a Rift last? Each Rift cycle brings 12 weeks of Challenges, and Weekly Challenges can be completed retroactively at any point before the cycle ends.

Is there a free track in the Academia Rift? Yes. The Rift has both a Free Track and a Premium Track, and the Free Track is available without buying the Rift Pass.

Which Rift number is Academia? Behaviour has not published one, and no official page names a matching Tome. Any specific number circulating right now is derived, not confirmed.

Is there a Bloodpoint multiplier during the Academia Rift? Nothing has been announced. A Rift launch is not itself a Bloodpoint event — those are separate Blood Hunt and Blood Feast activations, and Behaviour announces them individually.
