Silent Hill was the first time Dead by Daylight licensed a video game rather than a film, and six years later it is still one of the most searched chapters in the game — mostly because people cannot work out what is actually in it. Cybil Bennett, James Sunderland, Maria and Hinako Shimizu all have their own store pages, their own key art and their own price tags, and none of them is a character you can play.
Every number below is read off the live build — Patch 10.1.2a, 17 September 2026 — not off the 10.2.0 PTB currently sitting on test servers with one of Cheryl's perks rewritten.
Quick answer. The Silent Hill chapter (Chapter XVI) launched on 16 June 2020 with Patch 4.0.0 for $7.99 or 1,000 Auric Cells. It contains exactly one Killer — The Executioner, better known as Pyramid Head — one Survivor, Cheryl Mason, and two charms. The Midwich Elementary School map and the Silent Hill realm came free with the same patch and are not part of the paid DLC. Both characters are licensed, so neither can be bought with Iridescent Shards, though all six of their perks rotate through the Shrine of Secrets. Every other Silent Hill name in the store — Cybil Bennett, James Sunderland, Maria, Hinako Shimizu — is a Legendary outfit for Cheryl Mason, not a separate Survivor.
What is in the Dead by Daylight Silent Hill chapter?
Chapter XVI is a one-Killer, one-Survivor licensed chapter, which is why it costs $7.99 instead of the $11.99 that two-Survivor chapters like both Resident Evil chapters carry.
| Detail | Silent Hill |
|---|---|
| Chapter number | XVI (16) |
| Released | 16 June 2020 |
| Shipped with | Patch 4.0.0 |
| Killer | The Executioner (Pyramid Head) |
| Survivor | Cheryl Mason |
| Price | $7.99 / 1,000 Auric Cells |
| Exclusive charms | Seal of Metatron (Uncommon), Vic Viper (Very Rare) |
| Realm and map | Silent Hill, Midwich Elementary School — added to the base game, not the DLC |
| Source games | Silent Hill 2 (2001) and Silent Hill 3 (2003) |
The chapter's score was a joint collaboration between Behaviour's own composer Michel April and the Silent Hill series composer Akira Yamaoka, which is why the menu and chase music sound nothing like the rest of the game.
The Executioner is a genuine milestone on the roster of 44 Killers: the thirteenth licensed character added to Dead by Daylight and the first licensed video game Killer, the second non-human Killer, and the first Killer whose power interferes with a Survivor's sacrifice process. If you are working through the whole cast, the full Killer list puts him in context.
Is the chapter or the individual characters better value?
Both characters cost 500 Auric Cells standalone, so buying them separately costs exactly 1,000 Auric Cells — the same as the chapter. The chapter wins on a technicality: it also grants the Seal of Metatron charm, which you cannot get any other way. Buy the chapter, not the halves.
There is no shard route. The 250 and 125 Auric Cell legacy discounts apply to Original Characters only, as does the Iridescent Shard purchase path, so both Silent Hill characters sit at full price permanently. Their perks do reach the Shrine of Secrets, so a patient player can unlock all six for shards without ever owning either character.
The Executioner: power, stats and perks
Pyramid Head is a 115% Killer at 4.6 m/s with a 32 metre Terror Radius and a Tall hitbox, wielding the Great Knife. While Rites of Judgement is active he slows to 105%, or 4.2 m/s.
Rites of Judgement carves a Torment Trail behind him. The power holds 10 charges, drains at 1 charge per second for a maximum ten-second draw, and refills at 0.25 charges per second — a full 40 second recharge from empty. Each trail segment lives for 90 seconds, is visible to him within 32 metres and caps at 100 segments on the map at once.
Punishment of the Damned is the ranged attack: a 10 metre sweep that costs 2 charges and has a flat 2.25 second cooldown whether it hits or misses. It cannot climb slopes steeper than 42 degrees, which is why it eats walls and staircases so often.
Torment is applied when a Survivor walks over a trail segment while not crouched. It reveals them through Killer Instinct for 3 seconds and — critically — it cannot be cleansed, healed or waited out. The only way off the list is to rescue someone from a Cage of Atonement or be rescued from one yourself. A Tormented Survivor who is downed can be sent to a Cage instead of hooked, and at their second hook stage becomes eligible for Final Judgement, the mini-mori that does not require an offering.
Trails are blocked within 4 metres of Generators and Hooks, within 3 metres of Exit Gate switches and the Hatch, anywhere in the Basement, and on staircases; segments placed there survive only 3 seconds. Cages police camping automatically — stand within 10 metres of one for 3.5 seconds and it relocates, pausing the Entity's progression for 10 seconds.
Patch 9.1.0 was his big rework: Punishment of the Damned went from 8 to 10 metres, trail lifetime from 75 to 90 seconds, power capacity from 5 to 10 charges (recharge extended from 20 to 40 seconds), and Rites movement speed dropped from 4.4 to 4.2 m/s. Patch 10.1.0 then cut the Haste and Endurance an uncaged Survivor receives from 15 seconds to 10, adding Elusive instead.
His three perks, at live Patch 10.1.2a values:
| Perk | Effect at tier 3 |
|---|---|
| Forced Penance | A Survivor who takes a Protection Hit is afflicted with Broken for 80 seconds (60/70/80). |
| Trail of Torment | Damaging a Generator grants Undetectable until that Generator stops regressing; its aura is shown to all Survivors in yellow. Cooldown 30 seconds (60/45/30). |
| Deathbound | When a Survivor completes a health state of healing on another, the healer screams, is revealed, and suffers Oblivious while more than 4 metres from the person they healed (12/8/4). Ends when the healer loses a health state. |
Forced Penance was buffed by a full 20 seconds in Patch 4.3.0 — it originally read 40/50/60 — and Trail of Torment's cooldown was cut from 80/70/60 in Patch 8.1.0. Deathbound's current 12/8/4 metre band came in Patch 8.6.0, down from 16/12/8. The Killer perk tier list ranks them against everything else in the game.
What are Pyramid Head's best add-ons?
- Dead Butterfly — 10% faster power recharge, the safest general pick given the 40 second refill.
- Cinderella Music Box — 10% shorter Punishment of the Damned cooldown.
- Lead Ring — 25% more attack range for 25% less width, for long corridors like Midwich.
- Black Strap — the inverse: 25% more width, 25% less range, for jungle gyms and tight indoor tiles.
- Valtiel Sect Photograph — 2 metres off his Terror Radius per Tormented Survivor, up to 8 metres.
Cheryl Mason: perks and the Blood Pact change on the PTB
Cheryl — "The Young Veteran of Terror", 500 Auric Cells — comes from Silent Hill 3 (2003), where she spent most of the game under the name Heather. Her adoptive father is Harry Mason, the protagonist of the first Silent Hill.
| Perk | Effect at tier 3 |
|---|---|
| Soul Guard | Being healed from Dying, or fully recovering, grants Endurance for 8 seconds (4/6/8), cancelled early by any Conspicuous Action, on a 30 second cooldown. While Cursed, you can fully recover from the Dying State by yourself. |
| Repressed Alliance | After 30 seconds of repairing a Generator (40/35/30), press the Active Ability button to have the Entity block that Generator for 15 seconds. Its aura shows to all Survivors in white. Cannot trigger if another Survivor is repairing it. |
| Blood Pact | While you or the Obsession are injured, you see each other's auras constantly. Completing or receiving a heal on the Obsession grants both of you 7% Haste (5/6/7) for as long as you stay within 16 metres. Reduces your chance of being the initial Obsession by 100%. |
Repressed Alliance's charge time was cut in Patch 10.1.1 from 55/50/45 seconds to the current 40/35/30, which moved it from a novelty into a real anti-three-gen tool; the Survivor perk tier list covers where it now sits.
Blood Pact is the one to be careful with, because the live and test versions differ. On Patch 10.1.2a the perk still ends with the clause "Blood Pact is temporarily disabled if you yourself are the Obsession" — the perk that stops you being the Obsession also switches itself off the moment you become one. Behaviour's 10.2.0 PTB notes list it as:
"Blood Pact — New, being hooked as the Obsession passes the Obsession to another Survivor."
That is a PTB entry, not a live one. 10.2.0 has no published release date, so if you are building around Blood Pact today, build around the 16 metre Haste version. The rest of the test build's changes are in the 10.2.0 perk changes guide.
Midwich Elementary School: layout, the Clock Tower secret and Classy Act
Midwich is the only map in the Silent Hill realm and one of the few genuine two-storey indoor maps in the game. Its lower floor covers 4,096 square metres, the upper floors another 3,168, for a total of 7,264 square metres. The corridors sit in the same place every match.
The landmark is The Courtyard, in the centre of the building, with a Generator, a possible Totem, a possible Chest, a dense cluster of Lockers and Pallets, two Windows and several Breakable Walls. The Seal of Metatron sits in the middle of it, and the map plays sirens both when you load in and when the Endgame Collapse starts.
Patch 8.2.0 ran a gameplay pass that cut the long unimpeded sight lines down the main corridors, and Patch 8.4.0 quietly made the Clock Tower chest open instantly.
The Clock Tower secret room is the map's best-known easter egg, and it is not random:
- Repair the Generator in the Chemistry Laboratory — the room with the periodic table. The bell tolls, the clock face moves to 12 o'clock, and a gold medallion appears left of the tower.
- Repair the Generator in the Music Room — the room with the piano. The bell tolls again, the clock moves to 5 o'clock, and a silver medallion appears right.
- Trigger the Endgame Collapse. The Clock Tower door dissolves and the room opens.
Those two rooms also carry an achievement: Classy Act, earned by escaping as a Survivor after personally completing either Generator. For where Midwich fits among the other realms, see the full map and realm list.
Which Silent Hill names are outfits rather than characters?
This is the misconception the whole lane runs on. Behaviour has added a string of Silent Hill store items since launch, and not one of them is a playable character. The Legendary outfits — which replace the model, the name and, in most cases, the voice — are all Cheryl Mason underneath.
| Store item | Released | Price | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forge Born | 21 August 2020 | 1,080 Auric Cells | Executioner outfit |
| Cybil Bennett | 25 September 2020 | 1,485 Auric Cells | Legendary outfit for Cheryl |
| James Sunderland | 26 October 2021 | — | Legendary outfit for Cheryl |
| Princess Heart | 3 November 2022 | 1,080 Auric Cells | Feng Min cosplay set plus a Cheryl set |
| Maria | 15 August 2023 | 1,485 Auric Cells | Legendary outfit for Cheryl |
| Flayed Torturer / Awakened Order | 6 November 2025 | 1,080 (Flayed Torturer) | 2v8 Konami collection cosmetics |
| Hinako Shimizu | 30 June 2026 | 1,485 Auric Cells | Legendary outfit for Cheryl, from Silent Hill f |
Cybil is the one people get wrong most often. She has been a Legendary outfit since 25 September 2020, and she did not even have her own voice until Patch 5.5.0 — before that she used Cheryl's lines.
There is one more trap in the other direction: the Robbie the Rabbit "Lost Mascot" cosmetics released with the chapter on 16 June 2020 for 1,080 Auric Cells are outfits for The Legion — Frank, Julie, Susie and Joey — not for the Executioner. Silent Hill cosmetics, wrong Killer.
How do you unlock the Vic Viper charm?
The chapter's second charm is not awarded for buying it. Vic Viper is a Very Rare charm unlocked by entering the Konami Code at the Main Menu. On PC, press W, W, S, S, A, D, A, D, right mouse button, left mouse button, Enter. On console the classic input applies: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. A 16-bit rendition of the Dead by Daylight theme plays to confirm it worked. The charm is the ship from Gradius, Konami's 1985 shooter.
The Seal of Metatron comes from owning the chapter, and the UFO ending charm from owning the chapter or either character individually.
How does The Executioner play in 2v8?
His Innate Skill in the two-versus-eight mode is a straight power buff rather than a redesign: 4 seconds off the power recharge, 20 seconds added to trail lifetime, 1.5 metres added to attack trail length, 30% more attack trail width, and Killer Instinct extended from 3 to 6 seconds. Patch 10.1.2 also widened Punishment of the Damned by 2 metres in 2v8 specifically. Full mode details are in the 2v8 guide.
FAQ
Can you buy Pyramid Head with Iridescent Shards? No. Both Silent Hill characters are licensed, and licensed characters cannot be purchased with shards at any point. His three perks do appear in the Shrine of Secrets, which is the only shard route into the chapter's content.
Is Cybil Bennett a Survivor in Dead by Daylight? No. Cybil is a Legendary outfit for Cheryl Mason, released on 25 September 2020 for 1,485 Auric Cells. She plays as Cheryl and uses Cheryl's perks. The same is true of James Sunderland, Maria and Hinako Shimizu.
Can you remove Torment without being caged? No. Torment is removed only by rescuing another Survivor from a Cage of Atonement or by being rescued from one yourself. Healing, cleansing and Exit Gates do nothing to it.
Did Blood Pact change in Patch 10.2.0? It is changed on the 10.2.0 PTB, which replaces the "disabled if you are the Obsession" clause with the Obsession passing to another Survivor on hook. That build is not live and Behaviour has not published a release date for it, so the live perk on Patch 10.1.2a is still the 16 metre Haste version.
What map came with Silent Hill? Midwich Elementary School, in the Silent Hill realm. It arrived with Patch 4.0.0 alongside the chapter but was added to the base game, so you get it whether or not you own the DLC.
