Once Human How to Level Up Fast (2026): Why Everyone Hits Level 50 Before You

Quick answer: To level up fast in Once Human, do the Main Story Tasks first, then clear every Commission board you have unlocked, and drink EXP Medicine at the start of a new scenario. EXP Medicine gives 100% bonus EXP for 3 days and is bought with Astral Sand in the Eternaland Shop (max 4 bottles per account, added in Version 2.3.2 on February 4, 2026). The reason other players hit level 50 within hours is not a secret route. Commissions have no expiry, so anyone who joins a server a few weeks after it opened can turn in several weeks of boards at once. Level 50 is the cap in standard scenarios. In Isles of Abyss you skip leveling completely: characters start at max level and progress through Tech. This guide was checked against the official patch notes on November 7, 2026 (current build: Version 3.1.2).

Key takeaways

  • Level cap: 50 in standard scenarios. Your level resets when you sign up for a new scenario and is kept on a permanent server.
  • Biggest single boost: EXP Medicine, +100% EXP for 3 days, up to 4 bottles per account, bought with Astral Sand.
  • Why late joiners level fastest: Commission boards stack up. A player who arrives in week 3 can clear three boards in one sitting.
  • Route: Main Story Tasks first, then Commissions, then Side Story Tasks, then group content (Strongholds, Monoliths, Silos).
  • Level matters less than it did in 2024. Since Version 2.3.6 (April 8, 2026), gear has no level requirement and Tech unlocks are no longer gated by level.
  • Isles of Abyss and RaidZone: no leveling at all. Both start you at the top.

Why do other players reach level 50 so fast in a new scenario?

This is the most common leveling question on the official subreddit right now. On November 5, 2026, one player on r/OnceHumanOfficial put it plainly: "Whenever I join a new ED scenario, people seem to reach lvl 50 in a very short time compared to me." A day later another thread asked the same thing about every new scenario.

The answer has three parts, and none of them is an exploit.

  • They joined later than you think. Servers open on a fixed weekly schedule, and a server that opened two or three weeks ago has already unlocked two or three Commission boards. The official rules say "a new weekly commission board will unlock every 7 days" at the start of each season, and the studio removed the time limit back in 2024: "Commissions no longer have a time limit. Players can complete them at any time during the season" (official Once Human update notes, April 2, 2024). Every board you have not touched is banked EXP waiting for you.
  • They used EXP Medicine. It doubles EXP gain for three days, and veterans bring it in from Eternaland on day one.
  • They already know the route. Returning players skip base decoration, go straight down the Main Story, and stop to farm only when the story runs dry.

One player summed up the Commission effect in an r/OnceHumanOfficial thread from December 2025: "Depends how long the scenario was open. If in phase 3, commissions get you to 50 in 20 minutes. Otherwise if the scenario is just starting, week 1 commission, playing, farming berries and making soda." Treat "20 minutes" as one player's experience, not a guarantee. The shape of it is right though. The later you join, the faster you level.

What is the max level in Once Human?

Level 50 is the cap in the standard scenarios (Manibus, The Way of Winter, Endless Dream, Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash and Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve), per the community wikis and Game8. Starry Studio does not publish the number on a single official page, so check your own character screen if a future update changes it.

What happens to your level depends on where you play:

Where you playWhat happens to your level
New seasonal scenarioResets. You level from scratch again.
Permanent (no-wipe) serverKept. You can keep leveling to the cap.
RaidZoneEveryone starts at Level 50 with no blueprints, Mods or supplies.
Isles of AbyssCharacters start at max level. Progress is Tech, not EXP.

Older guides say the cap is locked lower in early phases. Players who checked found the same cap of 50 in every phase. What slowed them down in 2024 was higher-level regions and story content opening phase by phase. If you feel stuck in phase 1, the problem is usually running out of story and Commissions, not a hard cap. Our guide to what carries over and what resets when a scenario ends covers the rest of the reset rules.

What is the fastest way to level up in Once Human?

Here is the order we recommend for a fresh character on a standard PvE server in November 2026. It works the same on PS5, Xbox, PC and mobile.

Step 1: Drink EXP Medicine before you start

It is the official EXP boost item most new players miss. From the Version 2.3.2 notes (February 4, 2026):

"The Eternaland Shop now offers EXP-boosting Medicine, exchangeable with "Astral Sand," with a maximum of 4 bottles per account. This item can be brought into standard scenario servers. After use, you will obtain a 100% EXP gain boost for 3 days, helping you quickly level up in the early stages of the Scenario."

How to use it well:

  • Buy it in Eternaland before you sign up for the new scenario, then carry it into the Scenario Backpack.
  • Drink it when you are about to play for a long stretch. The 3 days run on real time, so a bottle used on a busy weekday is partly wasted.
  • The limit is 4 bottles per account, not per character. Save them for the scenarios you care about.
  • Astral Sand comes from Eternaland orders and from your Energy Links converting at scenario end. Our Eternaland guide explains how that pool fills up.

Step 2: Run the Main Story Tasks, nothing else

Leveling guides and veteran players recommend the Main Story Task line as the best start: the line (called Stardust Journey before Version 2.3.1) is front-loaded with EXP in the early game. It also walks you into higher-level regions as you go. Skip base decoration, skip resource hoarding and skip side content until the story stops moving. Build a basic shelter, a Workbench and enough ammo to keep going.

Step 3: Clear every Commission board you have

Open the Commissions tab and work through every board that is unlocked. A tip from the r/OnceHumanOfficial help megathread (August 2026): "For a quick level up and energy link, do commissions by summoning V (the bird), this should get you a few tech tree point and energy link." Pick the quick ones first: cooking, boiling water, gathering and crafting tasks are faster than fights.

If you are joining a server late, this step can be the whole leveling run. Each week's board is still waiting for you.

Step 4: Side Story Tasks and exploration

Once the main story stops, Side Story Tasks (formerly World Quests) are the next best EXP. Exploring also pays now: since the Version 2.3.6 Tech overhaul, collecting "cultural artifacts" for Reverse Engineering gives you Tech progress as well, so time spent exploring builds both your level and your Tech.

Step 5: Group content for the last levels

The last stretch to 50 is where many solo players stall. Strongholds, Monoliths, Securement Silos and public crisis events give large EXP chunks and are much faster in a team of four. Players on the subreddit suggest grinding "the monoliths you can beat, ideally in groups, it's easier on your durability/ammo in groups with no loss of experience." If you have no group, our guide to playing with friends on PS5, Xbox and PC covers how to join a team on the same server.

Does crafting give EXP in Once Human?

Yes. Crafting, cooking and processing give EXP, and players have used this for years when they run out of tasks. The best-known method is making salt from Sea Water. Game8 covered it back in 2024, and players today mention glass, berry juice and soda made from farmed berries.

Two warnings before you set up a crafting farm (Game8's salt method dates from 2024):

  • Recipes changed in Version 2.3.6 (April 8, 2026). The patch removed several mid-tier benches (including the Intermediate Stove) and simplified materials. A 2024 salt or soda guide may point you at a bench that no longer exists. Check what your own benches offer.
  • It is a filler method. It beats standing still at phase 1 with nothing to do. It does not beat story and Commissions.

No official EXP-per-craft numbers have been published, so ignore any guide that promises a set number of levels per hour.

Does character level still matter in 2026?

Less than it used to, and this is the biggest thing older leveling guides miss. Version 2.3.6 (April 8, 2026) rebuilt progression:

  • "Gear is no longer restricted by character level." You can equip a strong weapon at a low level if you have it.
  • Tech unlocks "are no longer limited by scenario phase or character level." You unlock Tech through Reverse Engineering, Tech Invention and Tech Points.
  • Tech Points still come partly from leveling. The official notes say "Tech Points can be earned by leveling up, repeating research, defeating Elite enemies, and more."

So leveling still feeds your Tech tree, but a level 30 player with good gear and Tech is no longer locked out of gear or Tech by level. If you want the full Tech picture, read our Tech tree and territory expansion guide. For a loadout that carries you through the low levels, see the best beginner build.

Note one trap from the same patch: gear you bring in from Eternaland is marked as "lost gear" and cannot be repaired, reverse engineered or traded. Bring it to get through the first hours, but do not plan on keeping it.

Do you need to level up in Isles of Abyss?

No. Isles of Abyss, the ocean scenario that launched on October 21, 2026 (PT) with Version 3.1.1, has no leveling grind. The official dev blog (October 16, 2026) says it directly:

"After entering the scenario, characters start at max level. You will advance Tech by exploring the archipelago, collecting resources, and completing key challenges… The Cradle system is not available in this scenario."

In Isles, the gear rarity you can craft and the number of active Mod attributes are both tied to your Tech Level, not your character level. "Leveling up fast" in Isles means raising Tech: explore islands, gather the new resources and clear the key challenges. EXP Medicine does nothing useful there.

The same is true of RaidZone, where every player starts at Level 50 with no blueprints, Mods or supplies. See our RaidZone guide.

Is Battle Pass EXP the same as character EXP?

No. They are separate bars, and mixing them up wastes time.

Character EXPBattle Pass EXP
What it raisesYour level (cap 50) and some Tech PointsBattle Pass tiers and rewards
ResetsWhen you start a new scenarioWhen the pass ends
Official boostEXP Medicine (+100%, 3 days)Super Weekend doubles Battle Pass EXP, up to 600 extra per week (Version 2.3.7, when the event is running)

Commissions feed both, which is why they are the best use of time when you join late. Super Weekend doubles Battle Pass EXP and some Monolith and high-difficulty crisis rewards (3 double-drop chances each per week). The official rules do not list character EXP, so it will not speed up your level.

When is the best time to start a fresh character?

If you want the fastest level 50, join a server that has been open for a couple of weeks. You get stacked Commissions and a populated world with groups running Strongholds. If you want the full scenario experience and the best shot at its rewards, join on opening day and accept a slower climb.

New servers open on a fixed schedule that differs by region and server type, so check the Scenario Selection screen for the next opening before you plan a run. The next big change to the game world is Visional Wheel Season 5, Dissonant Resonance, launching globally on November 19, 2026. The maintenance that brings it starts November 18 at 3:00 PM PT (23:00 UTC, which is already November 19 in Central Europe and Asia). Our Season 5 release guide has the times. If you are on a novice server, check when your novice server ends before you invest in a long climb.

Common leveling mistakes

  • Building a dream base at level 10. It costs hours of EXP. Build later or on a permanent server.
  • Wasting EXP Medicine. Drinking it right before you log off for two days loses most of the boost.
  • Ignoring Commissions because the tab looks like chores. For a late joiner they are most of the EXP on offer.
  • Following 2024 guides. Memetics are now Tech, Rift Anchors are now Worldstones, and gear has no level lock. Old routes send you to benches and systems that changed.
  • Trusting "levels per hour" claims. Starry Studio has not published EXP tables, so treat exact figures as one player's experience.
