OSRS Gear Upgrade Order: What to Buy First (Best GP Priority for PvM, 2026)

Every returning or mid-game Old School RuneScape player hits the same wall: a bank with a few hundred million gp and no idea which upgrade actually moves the needle. Buy the wrong item first and you've sunk 25M into a weapon that does nothing for the content you run. This guide ranks what to buy first by GP-per-DPS — the upgrades that give the biggest kill-speed jump per million spent — using live Grand Exchange prices from the Old School RuneScape Wiki (retrieved 3 September 2026).

Quick answer: what gear should you upgrade first in OSRS?

Buy your amulet and gloves before your weapon. The single best gp-per-DPS upgrade in the game is the Occult necklace (~399k) for magic, or an Amulet of fury (~2.73M) for melee/ranged — cheap slots that add flat damage across almost all content. Right behind them sit the earned upgrades that cost zero gp: Barrows gloves (Recipe for Disaster), the Fire cape (Fight Caves), and the Rigour/Augury prayers. Only after those slots are filled should you spend big on a weapon like the Abyssal whip (~818k) or Toxic blowpipe (~9.8M). The rule for the whole game: fill the cheap universal slots first, save the expensive megarares for last.

Here is the full priority order.

Why cheap slots beat expensive weapons

New players instinctively save for the flashiest weapon — a Scythe, a Twisted bow — but that's the worst gp-efficiency in the game. The Occult necklace costs about 399k and adds +5% magic damage to every spell you cast — the only neck slot in the game that boosts magic damage at all (OSRS Wiki); the Twisted bow costs roughly 1.39 billion gp and only matters at a handful of bosses. Per million gp spent, the necklace is thousands of times more efficient.

This is the exact mistake experienced players call out. As one r/2007scape veteran bluntly told a returning player showing off a fang and venom helm: "Get your mage cape, you got a fang and venom helm while rocking a noob cape lmao." The point stands for every slot — a cheap best-in-budget amulet or cape closes a bigger DPS gap than an over-budget weapon ever will.

The universal cheap upgrades that belong at the top of everyone's list:

  • Occult necklace (~399k) — +5% magic damage, best gp-per-DPS in the game.
  • Amulet of fury (~2.73M) — the default all-round offensive amulet for melee and ranged.
  • Dragon boots (~222k) — a strength jump for pocket change.
  • Barrows gloves — best-in-slot hands for most content, earned from Recipe for Disaster (free).
  • Fire cape — a budget offensive cape from the Fight Caves that unlocks harder PvM.

Don't forget the free upgrades between purchases

Two of the biggest damage jumps in OSRS cost zero gp and get skipped constantly because they aren't Grand Exchange items. Slot them in between your money purchases:

  • Rigour and Augury — the best offensive prayers for ranged and magic, unlocked from the Arceuus spellbook rewards. They add a flat accuracy-and-damage layer on top of whatever gear you own, and they cost nothing but the unlock content.
  • Slayer helmet (i) — a +15% damage and accuracy boost against your current Slayer task, built from the black mask. If you do any Slayer at all, this is one of the single strongest DPS items you can own, and it's earned, not bought.
  • Void or Barrows gloves — best-budget hands that you earn through content rather than buy.

The lesson players repeat over and over on r/2007scape: don't sit on a full bank waiting for a megarare while your cape, gloves, and prayer slots are still empty. Free upgrades first, expensive upgrades last.

What to buy first for each combat style

Your upgrade order depends on which style you actually train and PvM with. Below is the first-buy priority per style, cheapest impactful item first.

Melee

Start with Barrows gloves (earned) and the Fire cape (earned), then buy an Abyssal whip (~818k) and Dragon boots (~222k). Your first big-money purchases are the Amulet of fury (~2.73M) → Amulet of torture (~20.2M) and Bandos chestplate + tassets (~24M + ~16.4M). Endgame off-hand is the Avernic defender (earned from Theatre of Blood).

Ranged

Ranged is the most upgrade-hungry style. The Toxic blowpipe (~9.8M empty) is the single best ranged purchase for slayer and mid-tier bossing — buy it before any armour. Pair it with an Amulet of fury and cheap Blessed d'hide, then work toward Armadyl armour (~36.6M chestplate, ~27.3M chainskirt) only if you plan to boss seriously.

Magic

Magic is the cheapest style to gear for huge damage. The Occult necklace (~399k) is a must-own. Add a Toxic staff of the dead (~8.5M uncharged) or a Trident, then Ahrim's robes (~1.43M top). The megarare Kodai wand (~58M) and Ancestral robes (~96M top) are pure endgame luxury — skip them until you're doing Chambers of Xeric or Nex.

How much GP do you actually need to gear up?

OSRS Grand Exchange interface with buy offers for gear upgrades

You do not need a billion gp to be effective. Here's roughly what each gearing tier costs in tradeable upgrades, on top of the free earned items.

TierRough tradeable costWhat you get
Budget PvM~2–5MWhip, dragon boots, fury, blowpipe savings
Solid all-round main~40–70MBlowpipe, Bandos, torture, primordials
Serious bosser~150–300MArmadyl, dragon hunter weapons, better amulets
Endgame / megarares500M+Ancestral, Kodai, Scythe, Twisted bow, Tumeken's Shadow

Most players get 90% of the value in the first two tiers. The jump from a whip-and-fury setup to a full Bandos-and-torture main costs about 60–70M gp and roughly doubles your melee output at most bosses — the best mid-game gp you'll ever spend. Everything above 300M is diminishing returns for niche endgame content.

If you'd rather skip the grind and buy the gp directly to gear up in one sitting, OSRS Gold on Timesaver.gg delivers instantly at the best rate — see the exact per-million price on our live OSRS gold price guide.

The three upgrades that unlock the most content

Some upgrades matter less for raw DPS and more for what you can do. These three punch above their gp cost because they open new money-makers and bosses:

  • Fire cape (earned) — required or strongly recommended for a huge range of slayer and bossing tasks.
  • Barrows gloves (earned) — best-in-slot hands that carry you until deep endgame.
  • Toxic blowpipe (~9.8M) — turns slow slayer into fast, profitable slayer, and it's the entry ticket to most mid-tier bosses.

Prioritise these before any megarare. For a deeper look at where your gp goes once you start bossing, see our guide on how much GP you need to start bossing in OSRS and the full best money-making bosses ranked by GP/hour.

FAQ

What should I upgrade first in OSRS? Fill your cheap universal slots before buying an expensive weapon. Earn your Barrows gloves and Fire cape (both free), then buy an Occult necklace (~399k) for magic or an Amulet of fury (~2.73M) for melee/ranged. These add flat damage across nearly all content for a fraction of a weapon's cost.

Is the Occult necklace worth it in OSRS? Yes — it's the best gp-per-DPS upgrade in the game. For roughly 399k it grants +5% magic damage on every spell and is the only neck slot that boosts magic damage at all, making it a must-own for anyone who casts. It pays for itself almost immediately at any magic content.

Should I buy a Twisted bow early? No. At around 1.39 billion gp the Twisted bow only matters at a small number of endgame bosses. A returning player will get vastly more kill-speed from a ~10M blowpipe or a ~24M Bandos set. Save megarares for when your bank is comfortably into the hundreds of millions.

How much GP do I need to gear a main for bossing? A solid all-round main costs roughly 40–70M gp in tradeable upgrades (blowpipe, Bandos, torture, primordials) on top of free earned items. A serious bosser runs 150–300M. You do not need a billion gp to run most PvM content effectively.

Are earned upgrades better than bought ones? Often, yes. Barrows gloves, the Fire cape, the Avernic defender and prayers like Rigour are untradeable best-in-slot or best-budget items that cost zero gp — just time. Always clear the free upgrades before spending big on the Grand Exchange.
