Everyone wants the Infernal cape. It is the best melee cape in Old School RuneScape and the single most recognisable flex in the game. But "best-in-slot" and "worth your time" are not the same question — and the honest answer for most accounts is it depends on exactly two things: your combat stats and what you actually plan to fight. This guide gives you a straight yes/no framework instead of a hype pitch, with every stat and mechanic checked against the Old School RuneScape Wiki.
Quick answer (TLDR): The Infernal cape is a genuine best-in-slot melee cape, but the upgrade over a Fire cape is small in raw numbers — +3 melee attack and +4 Strength (8 vs 4). It is worth it if you are a near-maxed main who does end-game melee content (raids, Corrupted Gauntlet, high-tier bossing) where that Strength matters, or if you simply want the prestige. It is not worth the effort for a mid-level account that will not fight anything demanding — the Inferno is the hardest solo PvM grind in OSRS, and the time is better spent elsewhere. It is untradeable, so there is no shortcut except beating TzKal-Zuk on wave 69 yourself, or using a completion service.
Every stat below is from the wiki; nothing here is invented. Where a number is community-estimated rather than official, it is labelled as such.

What does the Infernal cape actually give you?
Here is the whole case in one table. This is the real "worth it" math — the cape's value is entirely in these bonuses.
| Stat | Infernal cape | Fire cape | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack (stab/slash/crush) | +4 / +4 / +4 | +1 / +1 / +1 | +3 each |
| Defence (all styles) | +12 | +11 | +1 |
| Strength | +8 | +4 | +4 |
| Prayer | +2 | +2 | 0 |
| Magic / Ranged attack | +1 / +1 | +1 / +1 | 0 |

The headline number is +4 Strength. That is what makes the Infernal cape best-in-slot for melee — the wiki calls it "the most powerful melee cape in terms of overall bonuses," and its +8 Strength is unmatched by any other cape. Everything else is marginal: +3 to your melee accuracy bonuses and a single point of defence.
What it does not do: it is not the single best cape for every individual stat. The Ardougne cloak 4 gives +6 stab attack and +6 Prayer, and the Mythical cape gives +6 crush attack — both beat the Infernal cape on those specific stats. The Infernal wins on overall offence and on Strength, which is what you care about for damage output.
There is no in-game GE price to quote here, because the Infernal cape is untradeable — it does not appear on prices.runescape.wiki because it cannot be bought or sold on the Grand Exchange. Its "cost" is the Fire cape entry fee plus your time.
Is the Infernal cape worth it for your account?
This is the part that actually answers the question. Rank yourself honestly.
Rank 1 — Worth it: you are a near-maxed main doing end-game melee. If you run Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood, Tombs of Amascut, Corrupted Gauntlet, or high-tier slayer with a melee setup, the +4 Strength is a real, repeated DPS gain on content you play for hours. On an account that is already close to maxed, this is one of the last melee upgrades left, and it earns its keep every trip.
Rank 2 — Worth it for prestige, if you accept the cost. The Infernal cape is the most respected solo achievement in OSRS. If the flex and the personal challenge are the point for you, that is a completely valid reason — just go in knowing the DPS gain over your Fire cape is small, so you are buying bragging rights and a skill milestone, not a power spike.
Rank 3 — Not worth it (yet): mid-level accounts with no end-game plan. If your combat stats are not near maxed and you do not fight anything that stresses your DPS, the Infernal cape changes almost nothing about your gameplay. The Fire cape already covers you. Your hours are worth far more spent on the gear and stats that unlock content than on grinding a cosmetic-tier upgrade you will not feel.
Rank 4 — Not worth it: you are a pure ranger/mage. The Infernal cape's whole value is melee Strength and melee attack. If you do not use melee as a main style, the upgrade over a Fire cape is one point of defence. Skip it unless you want it for completion.
How hard is the Inferno, really?
The reason "worth it" is a real question and not an obvious yes is the difficulty. The Inferno is a 69-wave solo minigame, and the whole run is one continuous attempt — die on wave 69 and you start again from wave one.
- Waves: 69 total. Wave 69 is the boss.
- The boss: TzKal-Zuk — combat level 1,400, 1,200 HP, max hit 148.
- Entry fee: you must hand a Fire cape to TzHaar-Ket-Keh to enter. It is a one-time fee; after that you can attempt the Inferno as many times as you like.
- Solo only: one player. No teammates, no help.
- Safe: it is a safe minigame — you do not lose items on death, only your progress and your time.
- Pillars: 3 pillars (255 HP each) that you use for line-of-sight, and which the boss can destroy.

Practically, that means near-maxed combat, top-tier Ranged gear (most players Range the Inferno), flawless prayer switching, and hours of learning wave mechanics. How long it takes is community-estimated, not official — the wiki does not publish an average — but experienced players typically talk in terms of days-to-weeks of focused learning and dozens of attempts, and it is widely regarded as the hardest solo PvM challenge in the game. A mid-tier account can expect a much longer, more punishing grind than a maxed one.

Fire cape vs Infernal cape: which should you settle for?
For a large share of accounts, the Fire cape is genuinely enough. It gives +1 melee attack, +4 Strength and +11 defence — it is the second-best melee cape and it is achievable by any account that can survive the Fight Caves. The jump to the Infernal cape is a +4 Strength / +3 attack refinement, not a transformation.
The clean decision rule:
- Doing end-game melee bossing/raids on a near-maxed main? The Infernal cape pays off — go for it.
- Not there yet, or not a melee main? Keep the Fire cape and revisit later. Nothing you fight right now needs the difference.
We break the two capes down side by side, including which to attempt first, in our Fire cape vs Inferno comparison.

What about the Infernal max cape and the pet?
Two things people ask about before committing:
- Infernal max cape: you can combine an Infernal cape + a max cape + a max hood into an Infernal max cape. Its combat stats are identical to the plain Infernal cape — it is a cosmetic combination plus max-cape utility, not an extra power tier. So it is only relevant if you are already maxing.
- The pet: TzKal-Zuk drops the pet Jal-nib-rek at a rate of 1/100 per kill, or 1/75 if you kill Zuk while on a Slayer task. If you are a pet hunter, that Slayer-task bonus is a reason to line up a TzHaar task before your kills.
The realistic shortcut
Because the Infernal cape is untradeable, there is no buying it off the GE — the only ways to wear one are to beat TzKal-Zuk yourself, or to have a professional player complete the Inferno on your account. If you have decided the cape is worth having but the grind is not worth your time — a common, rational conclusion for busy players — a completion service is the honest alternative.
Decided you want the cape but not the weeks of learning? Weigh the time cost against a done-for-you completion.
- OSRS Infernal Cape Service — beat Zuk without the weeks of practice, done by pro players.
- OSRS Fire Cape Service — need the Fire cape first (it is the Inferno entry fee)? Start here.
- All OSRS services — browse the full OSRS catalogue.
These are commercial services, not Jagex-endorsed routes; account-sharing carries its own risk and no service is a guarantee. Decide with that in mind.
FAQ
Is the Infernal cape worth it in OSRS? It is worth it if you are a near-maxed main doing end-game melee content, where the +4 Strength and +3 attack over a Fire cape are a real, repeated DPS gain, or if you want the prestige of the hardest solo achievement in the game. For a mid-level account with no end-game melee plan, or for a pure ranger/mage, the upgrade is marginal and the effort is better spent elsewhere.
How much better is the Infernal cape than the Fire cape? +3 to each melee attack bonus (stab/slash/crush), +1 defence in every style, and +4 Strength (8 vs 4). Prayer, Magic and Ranged bonuses are identical. The Strength difference is the main reason it is best-in-slot for melee.
Can you buy the Infernal cape in OSRS? No. It is untradeable and does not exist on the Grand Exchange, so it has no GE price. The only ways to obtain one are to defeat TzKal-Zuk on wave 69 of the Inferno yourself, or to use a completion service on your account.
Do you need a Fire cape to enter the Inferno? Yes. You hand a Fire cape to TzHaar-Ket-Keh as a one-time entry fee. After that first fee you can attempt the Inferno as many times as you want.
Is the Infernal max cape stronger than the Infernal cape? No. The Infernal max cape has identical combat stats to the plain Infernal cape — it is a cosmetic combination (Infernal cape + max cape + max hood) with max-cape utility, not an additional power tier.
What is the Inferno pet drop rate? TzKal-Zuk drops the pet Jal-nib-rek at 1/100 per kill, improving to 1/75 if you kill Zuk while on a Slayer task.
